I know I'm a little late but I live in northern cali on a crop farm. We found some wild turkey eggs from a nest that was abandoned (we think). We have the eggs (five in total) in a incubator now and we think they will hatch soon. This will be a new experience if we can properly take care of them and raise them. Your video has helped figure out what we will need to take off them

I bought mine from a Mennonite family and they were never on heat.
I used it for one week and they're off now at 3 weeks old.
Guess it's better in summer 😁

We don’t have turkeys this year. Hopefully, next year. I’d love to keep them year round but we’ve mostly just raised meat turkeys. I love them, too! Best of luck with yours.
Great information! I’m trying to obtain some turkey chicks from some friends here in Liberia (they brought fertilized eggs in from Kenya a few years ago). This will be my first time raising turkeys, so I have to get the feed figured out, since commercial chicken/turkey feed is not available here.
I hope that works out for you! All those insects ought to get the protein percent up!

I was only gonna do an order of 10 broad breasted bronze and whites for meat this year… but I have a new 20 acre wanna-be farm now in my life, so I just got done ordering 15 heritage turkeys- 10 royal palms and 5 regular bronze. I’ll end up selling some I’m sure, but I gotta have some long term gobblers running around the place… 🦃
That’s awesome! Congrats on your new 20 acres… I’m a little jealous. 😉. I would LOVE to have some permanent turkeys, but my acre isn’t quite big enough and they always want to wander off out of the yard.

Thank you for this. Me and my partner went to a park today (out the blue) and he was just wandering around. So we picked him up and took him home. I say thank you to the people that left him but boy am I a little nervous. making a brooder box tomorrow can I ask what would be the best bedding for him? I have him in a cat box right now with paper and proper feed (zamzos) but it looks almost like sawdust? We've named him Sir Julius peeper.
There wad a baby turkey walking around? Lol. That’s not something you see everyday. A good bedding would be pine shavings. Try to find him a friend! Let us know how it goes.

One died last night and another is about to die now.
What could this be!!??
Only thing I noticed was what looked like a tick or growth on its stomach.

Do you have to give them heat during the summer
It would depend on the temps, especially the nighttime temperature. Their behavior would show whether they were too cold or hot.
Also does anyone know what other birds does callahans sell?
Like do they sell pet birds or like doves?also if so do they sell pet bird food?or at least wild bird food

Hmmm… that sounds frustrating. We use a 28% feed for turkeys. I don’t vaccinate mine. What symptoms do yours have before they die?

I got two hatched today when can I start feeding them?
Give them feed and water as soon as you take them out of the incubator.
@@ChickenHues they were hatched by their mom I just took it out because 10 others are killed by their father. The male turkey stomped on the female turkey And pecked the chicks. I took the last 2 poults that survived and put them in a brooder.
Tried to give them feed and water a while ago and they took it the other poult had a curved feet will it be able to survive and walk?

Very cool. A chicken farmer I knew had turkey tractors for his with the exception of the one that became a family pet. Not too many turkeys die of old age. ;)
I’m watching this video because I went to callahans and supposedly got a few baby chicks and one of the “chicks” has a long neck so I looked up images of turkey poults and the “chick” looks like a poult and the feathers are starting to turn orangish brown like a mix of orange and normal brown
So I don’t know I might have a turkey as a pet but I will have to wait till it grows by the way I named it sky because I can’t figure out the gender yet
Because sky started off like a very tiny yellow “chick” with a long neck but now she’s getting feathers and turning orangish brown .so if she/he turn out to be a turkey is it safe for him/her to live with two other chickens? And how much do they weight fully grown and how tall are they?if anyone knows can you comment?oh and do turkeys peck at their food?
Interesting. They can get mixed up. It might be a turkey, and yes, they can normally live with chickens. Many people do that, but there is a concern about the disease Blackhead that you may want to look into. They will eat food just like chickens.
What made you choose white over say bronze?
We usually raise both. These were through 4-H and only white were available. Bronze don't look as nice dressed because of the darker feathers.
Let me clarify - the feathers are obviously off at that point, but the any missed pin feathers are dark. lol
How is going to weigh a live turkey
I haven’t, but I would weigh myself and then weigh myself holding the turkey- the difference would be the turkey. I might stand the turkey in a tub or box and weigh it.
When you speak of % in the food, is that protein? Or fat, carbohydrates, etc? I just have a part time stray kitten as you know, so he gets what's on sale.
It's protein %. The kitty doesn't mind, I'm sure! :)
To 🐝 simple to raise a turkey all you need to do is hold it then raise your hands!!

Can I feed them cracked corn at 10 weeks old
Yes! Just make sure they have grit available. (I use corn as a treat and still feed poultry feed, not exclusively corn.)
How often do turkeys lay eggs ?
I'm not sure because I only raise broad breasted meat turkeys. They aren't (usually) around long enough to start laying. Hopefully, someone will jump in here and let you know. :)
many many years ago when I was a kid, our turkeys I guess you could call them, free range, the old hens would sneak off and lay their eggs, and several times they would hatch some babies, the biggest problem was foxes and other predators.
Very neat! Yes, I bet predators were a problem. Did the hens just come back with babies then?
yes after the babies are hatched she will come back with them, before they hatched she would leave the nest for short times to eat but go right back . she would go to great lengths to avoid letting anyone or anything find her nest, a lot of the time she would nest under brush piles, I guess she felt safer there than in tall grass etc.
Really neat! I'm guessing they did a great job hiding those nests, since no one could find them!
Poults are hard to get to eat. She didn't address this particular problem.
I have never had that problem with the ones I’ve raised.
I put a couple of baby chicks to help teach them.

Yesterday, I took 3 baby chicks out of my brooder, and my 5 baby turkeys were lost.
I keep all my incorbaters upstairs in the next room, and I would whistle to them, and they did the same back to me.
It seems to calm them.
They forgot how to pile up to sleep,you know, like when football players tackle and they dog pile,lol
I had to show them again.
They're spoiled.
LOVE MY TURKEYS
A 250 watt bulb is way too hot. Use 50 or 100 watt bulb. You can cook them because Turkeys can be too dumb to get out from under that much heat.
Thanks! They never cooked themselves, although a 50 or 100 watt bulb would not have kept them warm enough. They were in a garage that was chilly.

Are you sure those aren't broad-breasted whites rather than broad-breasted bronze? I got a chick from Atwoods and they rarely know what breed they have, so I've been looking online, and figured I have a broad-breasted white, because the broad-breasted bronze pics I've seen online look nothing like my little yellow, adorable, loving, & sweet poult :)
They are totally whites! I called them bronze but they are not. So sorry about that! If yours look like those then they are Broad Breasted Whites. I sometimes raise the BB Bronze and you can probably see some

This video does NOT show Bronze broad breasted as stated. We have some, and they are bronze, not white...
Those are broad breasted white. I’m not sure if I said they were bronze, but you are correct that they aren’t. We also raise them with our whites sometimes.

I believe it is not good to feed medicated feed to animals unless they are sick. It weakens the effectiveness of the medication in the future.
