Dream Theater is my favorite band and this song is an absolute masterpiece. The last note on the piano being the last note of this album, is actually the first note on The Root of All Evil, the opening song on their next album Octavarium.
The inclusion of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as the soft background vocals during the outro is an interesting choice. I could be wrong but given the context of the song, it appears to be referencing an illusion that devout followers of the misguided religious leaders view themselves as soldiers for their cause; since BHotR was originally a US Civil War song for The Union.
During the speedy parts, it was the guitar and keyboardist playing the exact same notes at the exact same time. Then they traded off, then did the mimic stuff again. This band's talent cannot be measured by any earthly scale.
@RobFoster you MUST react to The Best of Times. The violin in the intro is fantastic and the outro guitar solo is the greatest guitar solo yet recorded by mankind!
The background vocals at the end are singing the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (I believe that's the name). My guess is they didn't want it to be in the forefront of the mix for it not to be a bold message of the song, just an easter egg of sorts for people paying attention I'd guess but only Portnoy or Petrucci would know for sure (Producers on the record). I recall the whole lyrical content of the song being about cults that commit violent acts according to Petrucci (the lyricist) by the way.

It is. They show images from the Waco Sage (Branch Davidian cult), Jim Jones and some others while on stage.
