I am an RN. My patient was a very old and distinquished gentleman with a twist. I could feel he was like an old mobster type. He had that kinda vibe and was from the East coast. He was not in good health and was snapped at everybody under his breath. I just threw it out there, "Who was the best musician in your life time?" And he said this guys name. I brought in my IPad in the next day and had it primed up! HE WAS OVER THE MOON! Heck, I was over the moon! I would have never discovered this kind of music if it wasn't for him. True story.
I was a trumpet and flugelhorn player starting as a 9 yr old in 1970. I saw Mr Kenton and his orchestra in the mid 70's and it blew me away (excuse the pun) . He put the trumpet players in with the audience for Peanut Vendor - incredible. My inspiration.
I only found out just today in July of 24' who Stan Kenton was by reading a Wiki page on 'Progressive Jazz' to get a better understanding and his name was mentioned as one of the Pioneers of Progressive Jazz. First time I ever heard of the track "The Peanut Vendor' was on the Fania All Stars 'Machine' album.
Peace from the SF Bay Area Cali.
What a high energy brass arrangement one of the finest complex arrangement I've ever heard miss you Stan for the awesome legacy you've left behind, sounds like a philharmonic orchestra period. Sennen Antonio Dourado Mumbai/Milwaukee
It's amazing!!! All the moving parts. Best version ever!
My grandfather’s favorite song. Boy does it jam.
I was lucky enough to go to dinner with Stan Kenton. I was a freshman at CSU, Northridge in the fall of 1978 and we did a tribute concert to him in which he performed with us. The whole jazz band went out to dinner with him and I sat next to his lady friend. It was a thrilling evening. I think he died a few months later.
MY band teacher is making me watch this. Thanks Mr.S.
What an all-star trumpet line!!!!!!! Jay Saunders, Noday, Vax, and Marcinkiewicz in the same section? Awesome!!!
THANK YOU! I was lucky to have a Dad that played Mr Kenton's music daily and took me, as a 13 yr old, to see this Band at Six Flags over America St Louis. I was mesmerized then as today. The Jimi Hendrix of his generation and genre imo. I met mr Kenton and asked for his autograph. His reply when I said my Dad owns all your albums and plays them everyday "Thank your Dad very much young man"... me "will you play the Beatles tonight?" mr Kenton "Sure we will play the Beatles for you"....me "Thanks Mr Kenton"...they blew me away with their version of Hey Jude that night.
This story is amazing.
Great story!
He was my grandpa’s uncle, and he told me stories about him. Idk how it makes you feel that I’m a descendant of Kenton, I never got to meet him , I’m too young, but think of this as meeting a relative of him. Idk man the world has changed. His posterity isn’t even relevant. Like to the point where his great grand children are telling his story wtfff.
@@garlicapple2244 What was the weirdest story about him that you heard?
@@garlicapple2244
Nah, I'll be 60 next month and found his records 50 yrs ago in my dad's collection. They're as exciting to play now as it was when I was 10. It says something for his staying power, longevity and legacy. I'm not the only one.
What a trombone solo. The best trombone in a chart ever on any version. Great piece of music. stan Kenton is a ledgend. Wicked Trumpets!!!
i guess I'm kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to watch newly released movies online?
@Larry Alan ehh I watch on Flixportal. you can find it if you google:P -messiah
@Messiah Ben thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I appreciate it!
@Larry Alan You are welcome :)
completely agree… that young man could play. Wonder what his name is? From what I've looked up it looks like Dick Shearer (by the way, Safe Search wouldn't let me look up "Dick Shearer" must have thought it was some kinky S&M thing - had to make him Richard before I could search). Great chops and technique. He was with Kenton to the end, and passed on in 1999. Left quite a legacy, whether I've ID'ed him correctly here, or not.
Mike Vax’s wife, Peggy Vax, was my middle school jazz band teacher. Mike would come in and play along with us all the time. 1983/84
NON VI È PIÙ UN GRANDE STAN KENTON. SOLO LUI AVEVA IL DONO DI SAPER UNIRE TANTI
GRANDI SOLISTI... ASCOLTATE
QUELLA CHE SEMBRA UNA ACCOZZAGLIA, UNA DISSONANZA DI SUONI, MA CHE
SI FONDONO PERFETTAMENTE TRA DI LORO IN PEANUT VENDOR (TRIESTE/ITALY).
... Kenton72, so was von locker-flockig,
aber trotzdem exakt. Großartig.
Der beste Kenton für mich durch alle Dekaden.
just yakking with my poppa about this tune as he was sitting down with a beer and a dish of peanuts to watch television with the Mrs. When we were kids he would take it to the Clarenceville High School in Livonia, MI to see greats like Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich!
Hello Annette, How are you doing?
Now, that's BRASS!
What a treat to remember Dick Schearer leading that trombone section!
Fantastic
I just met a great older gentleman that I am taking care of and I asked him about his music tastes. He is really hip with the times with even my music . He said, "My favorite is Stan Kenton!" Thanks Gene, I am blown away!
Amazing!
Saw them live in London. The trumpets were ear splitting as expected! John Von Ohlen was a fantastic drummer. Very subtle light touch - beautiful.
Lucky to hear Stan in Sydney in 1957, Kent Larson trombone played the lead melody, fabulous stuff, this version in great to, thankyou Stan and TH-cam.
Peter Farrar:- Stan Kenton"s orchestra under his guidance & strict discipline, performs at a supreme level of artistry of rythm & beat , creating addictive human culture. The importance of Kenton's vital involvement with his piano, created this electrifying stunning version of this supreme rythm & beat of the world famous "Peanut Vendor." The orchestra under the intoxicating influence of this music, raised this musical extravaganza to supreme high levels. The performance of Kenton's vital superb performance with the piano, the flutist & the large trumpet sections, plus the drumbeat sections, were outstanding & dominated the heart beat of this fantastic orchestra. This is one of the best versions in my humble opiinion. With this rythm & beat music, dancers are influenced to enter the dance floors to perform the exciting Cuban salsa. The golden words relating to the cuban rythm & beat fanatic, Peter E. Farrar.
UNA GRANDE ORCHESTRA !
absolutley out of this world love u ken
Extraordinaire ! Bravo pour ce morceau .
Saw Stans Band at The Odeon Cinema Nottingham.1962.
i have been a fan of kentons since the 50s like of not it is a masterpiece of arrangment ( the peanut vendor)
I typed in my exact birthday, Feb 6, 1972 and found this. So this is what was going on the day I was born....Cool.
i really needed this song so thanks. it sounds so good.
who knew old music would sound so good.
What an amazing performance by this truly fantastic orchestra. This has always been one of my best loved big band/jazz number and to actually watch them perform it is something else.
One of the greatest versions of this piece I have heard. Would have loved to have been there in the audience for this performance. Impossible to sit still while this is playing. What talent all around.
Steve LaValley
Incredible,excellent!
Hello Maria, How are you doing?
Love it Peanut Vendor And Intermisson Riff
absolutely
The best Peanut Vendor was played by Kenton's touring group in 1959. June Christy and the Four Freshmen joined in for a rousing version with a fantastic ending.
It's a blast, love it, waking up my soul! Thanks to Hank Lambert and all you guys!
Отлично!!! Super!!! With love from Russia!!!
Love back at ya, friend. Great compliment coming from a people who have gifted the world with such outstanding musicians!
I've heard a few of Kenton's arrangements of Peanut Vendor and this is the wildest of them all.
Stan Kenton. The Charles Ives of jazz.
Incomparable. A real bouncy, foot stomping and feisty number.
@btj89 Kenton often had atypical arrangements, like 5 trumpet parts or sax section of 1xAlto , 2xTenor, 2xBari, tubas and all kindsa stuff.
GRANDI SOLISTI E ARRANGIATORI
My father in law came round for Xmas dinner today. He asked me to find this.
I am so glad he came to dinner! :-)
Richard Torres on the flute, his future father-in-law Chuck Carter on bari sax, Baron von Ohlen on drums!
A great vehicle for a band like Kenton's, the rhythms and colour tone as rich as a Russian oligarch.
Now, THAT'S funny!
beautiful beautiful dissonance...
I must say, the way the Bass-Bone takes over for the bari just both cracks me up and gives me the shivers everytime I hear it. Wow! Just wow, what a sound from both the Bass-bone and the rest of the Band!
One of the best bands in the land kenton
Greta music which will never be repeated
To quote the original lyric: If you want a moral to this song/ Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong/ Peanuts! Peanuts!
Ah, this is great, one of my favorite Kenton charts I've had opportunity to play, and even better seeing Joe (Marcinkiewicz) playing in the video. I used to take lessons from Joe at his factory in Canby, OR and did some website work for him long ago and far away. Really great guy.
That is awesome!!!
Dick Shearer was a Beast. Wow.
Absolutely awesome
Kenny Baker gt
Thanks for posting this ‘classic’ Kenton version of the essential Latin ditty, Peanut Vendor!
wow what a sound,no other band had that wall of sound.i think his band of that time was the best.thanks for posting
It was over 30 years ago when I first heard this song and the peppy energetic beat of the music made me a fan of the song. For a live performance, consider what a performer is experiencing in doing that number.
No matter how good all the trumpet players are - and they ARE all highly talented here - you always know which one is Mike Vax!
Super dooper!!I once possesssed the long play record which obviousle included sounds from the audience & I always remember one lonely voice from the audience calling out "Where you been Stan?" & Stan replied jokingly about booze & other things.Wish I still had that record
Peter Jones calagry
Lovely
excellent stuff
the best one forever!
amazing
It's December 2015 and I have only just discovered this fantastic version of on of the 8 recordings I will be taking with me on my desert island! I had the original capitol 78 which I probably wore out. Coincidentally, I have an extensive collection of cassettes which I play in strict numerical order. My current tape, yes, you've guessed it...Stan Kenton. Perhaps that's why I looked it up on my computer. Briefly, I love "Tampico" with June Christy. Check the lyrics.
5 man trumpet line...lovely discordance, reminds me of Chase, also of that era.
wow. were playing this in my band
STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRAS VERSION OF THE PEANUT VENDOR IS FABULOUS !!! PURE LISTENING JOY.
HY KLEINMAN ( ALIAS PEREZ K )
Troppo bello
An absolutely incredible arrangement and song. No doubt some of the best "feel good, let's have a cocktail" music made. I would encourage all that have not to listen to the original recording of this from 1927(?) by (and my apologies if I have copied this incorrectly) 1st RECORDING OF: Peanut Vendor (as ‘El Manisero’) - Rita Montaner (1927), to really appreciate what Kenton did with this music.
The sign on the front of his tour bus said- No Where, always thought that was neat.
"Jazz artists don't compete, they're artists." ~ Maynard Ferguson
Little History
3 degrees of Kenton: Maynard played for Kenton (5th solo trumpet), Chase played in Maynard's band (was let go for having chops problems, later straightened that out and played for Herman) Bill Chase forms his own group after playing with Herman.
magnifique bel musique
I believe that today, Dec. 15th, is Mr. Kenton's birthday.
4:15. LOVE IT.
amen~!
In the very early 50's, Stan toured Germany (still pretty beat up by the war). I was waiting to depart from Bremerhaven on a boat to start my 2nd year of college in the US. He (and June Christy) brought the house down, converting young Germany to the Western way of looking at things. Absolutely thrilling.
That Berlin concert in 1953 with ZOOT SIMS was Very Good...
I love the Trombonist near the begging. His moving eyebrows. Great solo. Great Chart!!!
Dosn't need swinging that would be cheesy.
Stan Kenton was very specific about not having his band be just another swing band which were rampant at the time. In fact he detested playing swing charts because of this.
It's not a big band unless it has FIVE trombones! Kenton invented the wall of sound, not Phil Specter.
I’m related to him :) he was my grandpa’s uncle can you freaking believe that??? I wish that my grandpa’s mom kept the Kenton last name, but eh. It’s still in my blood. I just felt like sharing.
@@analogueavenue I hear you, and I love Coltrane, but although ths video was made in the '70's Kenton was doing his wall of sound thing in the '40's, so I agree with original reply from Larry Smith.
Please, specter can't hold a candle to this guy. Look how he destroyed Let It Be.
Yup. early "big" bands were 5 reeds, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, piano, bass, drums (sometime guitar) Stan made it 5 trumpets, 5 trombones and additional Latin percussion.
"Malaguena" only needs 1 second to prove that.
The original heavy metal..
haha and electric pianos. I couldn't agree more about the art stuff. my entire view of profession jazz musicians has changed, especially in thinking that one person is better than another when they are creating amzing art in different ways
Thank you damiles man. you had to be really good to play in his band. Check out his version of send in the clowns or Street of Dreams . 5 trumpets, 5bones, 5 saxes. It will blow you rmind. Greatest brass section.
this is great! I love the trombone part.
4:13 - I have nothing.
I'm awake now-----How about you?
I saw Stan play this at Brandy's Wharf In Philly in 1970 or was it 1971? AWESOME!
LOL! Torres was smart enough to get out of the way of those trumpets!
totally matey!
@xxjewledxxromance Von Ohlen plays drums. I played & recorded with him in the Indianapolis/Cincinnati area in the 1980s. He still lives/gigs in that area. One of the best musicians I've ever worked with.
Stan Kenton and his orchestra do a stirring arrangement of " The Peanut Vendor ". Great listening !
Nice. Has the same rhythm as traditional caribbean steel bands or calypso
haha 4:20. love that chord. :)
el manisero , jazzyest !
@charold3 During the late 70's before he died,Kenton did have black musicians in his band, a trumpet plyer by the name of Kevin Jordan and a Bass Trombonist by the name of Doug Purviance. Another fact is a lot of black jazz musicians didn't read music that well either and to play in kenton's band you had to read music.Kenton was also very good friends with Nat King Cole who was on the same label.
Everyone loves 420 >.>
Interesting in that the recording that I have of his band doing this number,
probably some years earlier, lasted almost nine minutes long!
"The Peanut Vendor had a second life as a hit number when Stan Kenton recorded it with his big band for Capitol Records, in 1947."
"The Skatalites are a ska band from Jamaica. They played initially between 1963 and 1965"
obviously this isn't from 1947, but the arrangement is.
4:10
5:54 dude what the fuuuuuuuuck. thats nasty. fuckin love this version
