I am stunned at how much this song is reviewed here. I am lucky to say I was sitting 50 feet from the stage during this performance; I was 15 and had to talk my older sister into driving me to Tanglewood. I recall the delay in starting the song due to Danny Serafin fixing an issue with his drums. Terry Kath, who was the de facto band leader, lost his patience and started playing the intro. The other acts that night were The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and John Sebastian (Loving Spoonful fame). At about 10, Terry Kath announced the last song (due to noise) and as they played, my sister and I scurried to her lime-green1969 Ford Pinto to beat the crowd out. What a night!

Great band from the 70's-80's. They were a rock & roll band with horns & blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, & pop music. They had a lot of great songs such as "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "Feelin' Stronger Everyday", "Questions 67 & 68", "I'm A Man", "If You Leave Me Now", "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", "Saturday In The Park", "Colour My World", "You're The Inspiration", "Will You Still Love Me?", "Look Away", "Old Days" etc.

Original 7 members from 1969-1978 (Kath's death) is some of the best rock fusion ever created. That insipid 80s ballad band almost kept them out of the hall of fame. Lamm's Saturday in the Park and Kath's Make Me Smile show just how vocally gifted this band was.

This was written by Robert Lamm, who explained on The Chris Isaak Hour: I wanted to try to describe the process of writing the song that I was writing. So, 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky' - there was a neon sign across the city. That song came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4 a.m. in the morning when I looked at my watch - I was looking for a line to finish the chorus.

The original Chicago lineup was some of the greatest musical talent ever assembled. Lead guitarist Terry Kath was the heart and soul of the band. He tragically ended his own life in 1978. He was foolishly playing around with a gun he thought was unloaded, and shot and killed himself.
Even though the band continued, they were never the same after his passing. The original Chicago music is their best (Feelin' Stronger Everyday, Make Me Smile, Saturday in the Park, are just a few of their many hits)

So glad you did the Tanglewood version . Terry was on FIRE 🔥 in that concert. Hear Terry on lead vocals and a lot more Brass in.... Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon... Tanglewood 1970 and be sure it is 14 minutes because it has been cut up. Chicago never recorded songs called Make Me Smile or Colour My World . They are both cut outs from Ballet. The band was surprised that the record company did that. Back in the day AM radio was standard in cars and AM radio had a 3 minute time limit. We were confused because FM radio had a little longer version so we got the album and there was a lot more to it than we knew.

Yes, as the other gentleman has already noted, Cetera is, as is very often done by band members, giving credit and at the same time informing the many people who want to know, who the fantastically talented artist is that just left all their jaws on the ground. The late Terry Kath, as has been noted by the most expert industry people was a "Triple threat", outstanding, indeed, extraordinary not just in his virtuosity on the guitar, but also was top shelf in his singing, and a craftsman songwriter. Jimi Hendrix told saxophonist Walter Parazaider, "...your guitar player is better than me".

There is something about this song that makes me want to go for a drive down a long road in the forest or just sit and relax both at the same time.

Thanks so much for doing this one. I love the HORNS! but the whole tanglewood concert is amazing . Check out the rest of it.. it's gotta be among the best live performances in that era not only the performance but the sound capture .. it sounds so good! I'd we're talking old school. 1970! The other one that blows my mind is Black Sabbath in Paris in 1970 for live in the same year and with amazing sound quality and kick ass rock n roll .. cheers

All three of ya’ll of you were right. Big Momma had the right of it , though that every member of Chicago were at the top of their game and talented and went out of their way to make super solid music always!

I should have added RIP for Terry. And mentioned his deep vocals that contributed to their sound (Color My World is a personal favorite). After Terry's untimely demise Peter Cetera, the lead singer here, took over the direction of the band. The music was still technically good - they were all world class musicians after all - but it lacked the fire that Terry brought. BTW he sometimes used the alias "Take Care". Sorry :) For years that's what I thought they said at the end of the tune. Years I tell you

Hi y'all, just sub'd! I grew up on this music! I had a great idea, Lulu is such an inspiration with her love of music that I thought she's young enough to take guitar lessons!!! Who knows , in ten years she could be touring with one of the best bands around!!!
Give her some singing lessons too while your at it❤

Grew up in Chicago and loved CTA/Chicago by Album 2 because the CTA threatened to sue the band if they didn't change their name. Terry Kath was recognized by Jimi Hendrix as one of the best guitarists he'd ever seen/heard. By 28 he was drunk and accidentally shot himself....damn! Never the same without him.

Saw them in concert in NJ at about the same time of this performance, possibly the same tour. They were that good or better.

You Gal's are reacting to some great tunes. I like the studio ver more but to each their own. This is early Chicago for sure, 2nd album. 1st with the new shortened name as they had to drop the 'Transist Authority' bit. Check out 'Questions 67 and 68' for more fire from Chicago.
I'd like to also suggest a great old Canadian band with a similer sound in some ways like a great horn section, and that's 'Lighthouse'. Check out 'One Fine Morning', 'Pretty Lady', 'Sunny Days' or 'Hats Off To The Stranger'. Cheers.
