A blocked foley for a pt of a 'senior' nurse... calls me in to help with flushing it, with an attitude of "never give up until you achieve your goal "...
2 minutes in literally urine was all over the walls, our scrubs and some flew into my mouth, because i was stupid enough not to wear a face shield... but what did i know i was still new back then

I'm a ODO (operating department orderly) and honestly feel bad for you guys at the ER, A&E and EF. every time i go to collect a patient for theatres or request for an item for theatres, you guys tend to have a list of things which makes me wait a good 40 minutes to an hour so you can finally start on the paper work for my patient.
My worst experience as an ODO was when a contaminated substance bag (the bag we put body parts or one time equipment such as those urinals or anything that cannot enter the sluice machine) had a rip on the top, so when i had lifted the bag to put into the bin, left over urine (+ blood) inside the urinal had dropped all onto my torso and arms.

My worst urinal story is when I was emptying one in the toilet and it splashed back at me. Guess who had their mouth open at the time?? 🥴 Needless to say, after using most of a bottle of mouthwash to rinse my mouth with, I never did that again! Also, when I started teaching nursing, I always instructed my students to close their mouths when pouring the contents into the toilet. When I told them why, I never had to say it twice.

I was a student nurse and had my first night shift. On one of my last round I emptied a couple of foley bags and walking out of the room to empty them, I tripped. My urinals were in a holder and in my fall this holder went flying. Just imagine a sea of urine spreading very quickly in the hall.

    • @shirleylaboy603

Better down the hall than all over you. I had an elderly patient who would use the urinal and then drop it on the floor. Or spill it in the bed which was always near the end of my shift but that just one of the joys of being a nurse.

I used to volunteer as an EMR in a tiny, remote Yukon community and the first time I had to help a patient use a urinal, he was a cute, 20 something guy, strapped to a spine board (rollover accident on the Alaska Highway) and was waiting to be airlifted to a hospital . After he told me he had to pee, I looked up to find all of the other EMRs had disappeared. So I put on my professional face, got a urinal from the health unit and helped him maneuver his penis in. Luckily, there weren’t any mishaps and his dignity was preserved. You can bet I gave my colleagues shit for disappearing at that moment😆

@@ariesvixen853 used to be a huge issue when patients, young men were admitted the night before surgery at 8pm. No food allowed. No cellphones yet. In hospital for a knee surgery in the morning. They'd get bored fast. Ring their bell and we young nurses go into their curtained area to ask can I help, and there they have their penis out jerking. Asking us do you like it? The older nurses of the time taught me one liners as did my cop fiance, "I've seen better...much better" and walk out. Itvwas a pain. Worked as a CNA in a nursing home for awhile. I got a urinal thrown at me more than once by an a-whole resident. If you didn’t come with in a minute of him pressing his call button he would do that about 40% of the time. Kinda hard to respond that fast when there’s only 2 CNAs staffed overnight in a 60 bed facility. Staffing problems was the reason I decided I didn’t want to work in the medical field.

I had a clinical rotation in a nursing home and they also had a resident who liked to throw his urinal because he was just a mean jerk who thought being old gave him the right. He was not cognitively impaired, just an A-hole. He also liked to degrade staff as they helped him onto the toilet to drop a deuce. I changed his treatment plan to briefs (adult diapers) to stop the daily urinary assaults on staff. It only took 1 fiber-supplemented, old dude dump in that diaper to make him change his attitude towards staff so he could go back to urinals and toilet assistance.

    • @beccapeck5102
      @beccapeck5102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@TheQuark6789 the freshette doesn't have a container. Just makes it so I can stand next to a tree. When camping, I have a Nalgene water bottle that I wrote a large red circle with a line through it so no one would drink out of it. I make sure the bottle seals really well.
When camping in the cold, it makes a great hand warmer (98.6). Hence has to seal well.
The "urinal" we use for my son is also another Nalgene bottle with a lid. We don't use typical medical grade urinals.

Took care of someone in psychosis that thought they would die if they stopped drinking water (literally at the point of almost killing themselves accidentally by drinking too much water). We took away all his drinking vessels so he used his urinal, which had been used already, and used it to try to drink water. We had to use everybody on the floor and security to get it from him, because we couldn't just let him drink. By the end we had to turn off all the water to that room until the medication started working a couple days later.

A few years ago as a medical intern on call we were going full speed ahead on CPR for a patient when the resident, rushing past me to get to the other side of the patient, knocked over the patient's urinal hanging on the rail at the corner of the bed. Cold urine splashed down my scrub leg and soaked into my socks and new trainers I had bought particularly for hospital work.
I paused for half a second and gritted my teeth before continuing to go for the syringes; the resident swore and apologised before grabbing the ambu bag. We called it after 40 minutes of CPR, and I showered, put my socks in a specimen bag, rinsed out my shoes, and completed the rest of the call squelching my bare toes in my shoes.

Inmates can be tough. One kept trying to flash me even though his hands were cuffed behind his back. He was pelvic thrusting and saying nasty things... just the worst.
On the other hand, there was a police brutality incident that I still regret not reporting to this day. I have no idea what happened before they brought him in, but the cops were being extremely aggressive and yelling conflicting commands at an injured handcuffed patient. It certainly wasn't a good look, especially since the prisoner was black and our area is very much predominantly caucasian. That was bad, but I didn't say anything. Then it got out of hand. VERY out of hand.
One of the officers ordered him to stand, but he couldn't because of his injuries and fell to the floor. The officer suddenly started beating the absolute hell out of him, right in the hallway of the ER. The other officer joined in, kicking him while the first just punched him repeatedly in the face. Blood started pooling on the floor.
Absolutely nobody said or did anything to stop it and I was just a lowly transport worker. I kept looking around at the doctors, nurses, and technicians to see their reactions and they all had their heads down or turned away, like it wasn't happening. Afterwards I had to wheel a different patient down that hallway and the gurney left a trail of blood after passing over that spot. It was absolutely brutal to see something like that and like I said, it still bothers me to this day, years afterwards.

ERs now have this vacuum suction thing for those who can’t, or shouldn’t, get out of bed. (I had a stroke & am partially paralyzed. I also have a seizure disorder, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) & Disautotomia, among other things, all of which make it dangerous to get up to pee when you’re going through an emergency situation) It’s a SUPER WEIRD feeling at first, but it’s like a cooling, airy sensation. (I imagine it being similar to a bidet, though I have no personal experience to reference the comparison) Either way, it’s definitely better than using the urinals you showed or having a stranger all up in your business. Plus, it’s more hygienic as it cleanses while suctioning.

Him hearing he may need to be catheterized managed to urinate by some grace of good luck I had a second clean bottle in his room he managed to urinate 1 bottle up to the neck + 3/4 of a second bottle. This is the most urine i've ever held in my hands at one time.

Recently in the OR a pain patient was getting his steroid injections and the marcaine she used with it numbed everything from the waist down. Poor guy really needed to pee but obviously couldn’t make himself go due to being numb. So the male RN inserted the straight cath while I held the urinal container. We had to use two containers bc he voided 1250 mL!!!! And bc he was lying down, I had to assist by pressing on his bladder to make sure he had fully voided.
Talk about a long time holding someone’s dongle. Well in my case, red rubber.
Oh! And it was a 12 fr which made it flow even slower. 😩

Never used a urinal, but used a bed pan. Had been in an accident, and maybe due to pain killers or the shock of it all, I didn’t have the sensation to pee. I realized it had been like 15 hours since I had last gone when they had me try, even though I still “didn’t have to go.” Well, I peed like a full liter and nearly filled the pan. The poor nurse walked it very slowly and precariously to the bathroom while whispering to herself, “whoa… whoa” :…. I felt awful!

Had a dude that couldn't find his genitals, so he used Vicks vapor rub to, "Make it poke out" so I would clamp the urinal over his entire peri-area or end up with urine everywhere. Another reason may have to use them is if they are monitoring your output for whatever reason. I was young, stable, etc and the first couple days of my hospital stay I had to use one so they could monitor volume. Finally after 2 days I kindly asked if I could stop using it and they agreed (I was there for pneumonia, not urinary symptoms).

I had a morbidly obese patient propped up into a shower chair that was a bit too small for her so my foot was almost directly beneath the hole in the chair. She peed on my foot and if I moved she might’ve fallen so I just stood there as she literally peed a River on my foot. Brand new Hokas too. I tried rinsing my shoe as best I could, threw my sock away and washed my foot and put on a hospital bootie but my shoe was wet and I had to finish out my shift in that urine-soaked shoe. Walking with wet squishing up between my toes was not pleasant. Still, I’d rather be peed on than puked on any day. When my oldest was a baby he puked into my mouth once. Smh. So gross.

I've been in the ER, had to use these to measure my output, using a male one when laying down is a pain in the butt. Every other time I figured out a way to lean over the bed and pee into it. The dozen cords hooked up to me made it the worst, which one hurt the most and work around that.

We had a new admission, in his late thirties, on the ortho floor years ago who was obsessed with his urinal. He began calling nurses station complaining that his urinal was "Too small ". He tried this multiple times on all three shifts for several days each time hoping to get a different nurse in his room. There was some malfunction in his brain that someone would enter his room and be "turned on". Needless to say, the urinal was the appropriate size and he had fantasy issues.

I was in housekeeping at the time. This old guy decided it was a good idea to set his used urinal on his walker (one with 4 wheels), and just take it with him. He was so clumsy on his feet that he accidentally pushed the urinal, so it fell off the walker... he did that constantly and I constantly had to come clean up after him. He did not understand that putting it on his walker was a bad idea.
Then there's the one where a guy had used one and put it under his bed, I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from. But I figured that it was probably the guy. But then I sweeped under the bed and suddenly this dark yellow urine just covered my feet (I wear sandals).
    Gotta love my job 😂

In 2018, I was in the hospital for 15 days with pneumonia and renal kidney failure (the pneumonia infection went septic). I was 35 at this time and hours from death when my girlfriend (now fiancé) got me to the ER.
Anyway, after being intubated and going on dialysis for a week in the ICU, I finally come out of my induced coma (as I called it) but still needed dialysis. But by this time, I had no trouble urinating. In the middle of dialysis, I tell the technician that I needed to pee. She shows me the urinal but tells me that she doesn't expect me to get much. We were both surprised as I proceeded to feel about 85-90% of the urinal.
I should mention that although I had pneumonia for a week that was treated by doctors as bronchitis, the reason I was finally taken into the ER was because of the inability to pee.

I had ended up in the ER in DKA because in the US insurance companies get to dictate when exactly you can get a refill on you prescription refusing to cover your life saving insulin if it's a couple days early(which can happen if say you went on vacation over did it a bit requiring you to use a little bit more insulin than normal) forcing you to pay the outrageous price of over $480 which I couldn't afford. Well they constantly pump you full of fluids as one of the treatments and I remember having to pee so bad but couldn't get up and go because of the IVs(yes IVs, had one in each arm) and ended up filling the plastic urinal more than twice with the nurse having to go empty it so I could keep going!
But the jokes on my insurance company, I may have spent nearly 5 days in the ICU and almost died but they had to pay for it! Which ended up costing around 2000x the cost of the insulin itself!
