This was honestly an eye opening video. You just managed to change my mind for the better about JJK S2 art style. I always love your chapter reviews and plot theories but this is another field of knowledge i didn't expect you to give a such a sound opinion on. Wonderful video👍👍. However, going forward i will miss S1 darker and more detailed art. I hope they bring it for Shibuya Arc 🙏🏿. In MAPPA we trust.
I may be speaking from ignorance, but I think it wouldve been cool keeping the character designs detailed during non-battle story moments and then simplfying it for scenes with more dynamic motions. Similar to FMAB.
as the previous comment has stated, it would likely take more time. They are going to be capturing the ENTIRE Shibuya arc as well as star plasma vessel arc. That is an extraordinary amount of fight scenes
Yeah, I agree with you that the less details, the more fluid/smoother the animations would be. It's the same thing for ranking of kings since they use a similar approach.
I miss JJK S1 vibe. The dark tone, close framing, and the wild background music in fight scenes. I just hope the visuals will come back in season 3. But still I'll continue to watch JJK S2. In fact Iam waiting for the next episode (premature death) haha, gotta still respect the animators and new director this season bros.

I was a little bit worried, but now that i am watching the 2nd season, i'm loving the new artstyle, and it really does make it possible for the action scenes to be even better than S1, just like you said! Great video, thanks!
talking about simpler style I think an anime that absolutely nailed it is devilman, they were able to deform the faces and bodies based on movement and I really like this style, it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea especially when it's extreme like in devilman but I'm personally a big fan of simpler, but more fluid animation even to the point the smears look blobby
Just watched the new episode and the art/theme does really feel more simpler but clearer and more fluid which is amazing! I think if they balance between slow detailed shots and clear fluid fights it would be perfect! I really do believe a lot of fighting back scenes from S1 where really busy
As an animator, I'm really glad you made this video. Many don't seem to understand why art becomes simpler in well-animated sakuga scenes. Every second of animation seen is about 24-30 drawings. It makes more sense to sacrifice immense detail in every drawing in order to get a more fluid product. I mean if you can have both, but it takes an immense amount of effort. More than what's usually done.
People keep saying his eyes look worse, but that's because they didn't watch episode 4. They look the exact same. I think the tiny clouds shown in his eyes were a representation of him awakening reverse curse technique.
The anime now is flat, has less contrast, less flare, boring angles, and no priority on any elements, every aspect of season 2 is just fine, nothing exceeds in any area being visual or soundtrack, still drawing or in-between drawing. No I'm not a hater, I loved the manga and the latest chapter is looking like someone getting clapped in half maybe isn't the end of the world, but season 1 really had a uniquess even more compared to the manga, however while season 2 has "fixed" compositing issues it hasn't enhanced the show overall, at least personally for me it hasn't. Season 2 adapts the manga well enough but doesn't add a lot more, it simply is ok for JJK. And for me, personally, JJK is not ok, it's amazing! Jujutsu Kaisens 1st season is a lot better than the manga. Jujutu Kaisens 2nd season is a little better than the manga. NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION, I'M OPEN FOR A BRAWL.
I HIGHLY doubt it, 2 reasons: 1. We already got the Shibuya Key Visual AND Shibuya Character Designs (Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, Maki, Gojo and Nanami) Both are shown to be in the simple style. 2. I don’t think them changing art styles was a choice, rather it’s more convenient with the production constraints. Considering the release of the JJK 0 movie and chainsaw man S1, it would’ve taken too long for S2 to be well animated with S1’s heavy art style.
my thing is that in fights, is just a zoomed in a character zoom out to shout the fight itself, back in again with almost no movment to go back zoom in the character. Where season 1, has movment all the time
“minimal/simpler art direction” and “time constraints” are contradictory? MAPPA needs to stop having so many projects going at once or quality goes down, that’s their issue. Personally I don’t like the Hanami vine’s scene. If giving an inch is “simplifying the art for more dynamic movement” then they end up taking a mile by adding excessive dynamic movement, which makes it all a blur anyways.
Fr I really don't like S2's animation. Like they talking about the 'fluid motions' which Season 2 should have a lot more but to be honest unless you pay attention and nitpick very closely the motions of the characters are just perfect. So since motions don't really matter as much, we got a very cartoonish JJK (Sukuna vs Mahoraga was the biggest disappointment) for no reason. 😭😭
I've seen a lot animators say that the new animation shows improvements in compositing, fluidity and color grading. And the other part is a slight style change due to different animators. The linework is thinner and the models less detailed which makes motion more fluid- imagine animating an intense fight with a model that has too many wrinkles in their clothes and complicated shading or textures. It would take too much time. The camera angles also looked more dynamic and the backgrounds were less busy which distracts from the action. In short words, it looks promising. It's different from the aesthetic of season 1 but being honest here... I like it way better.
I am definitely gonna miss the old style but you're right about Megumi's fight scene from season 1 it could be better. I like the new one too but it still feels like something missing.
I know the animation is going to be great regardless, and the art style just depends on your preference, I like the simple design of season 2 more, but what I most hope for is that the fight choreography to be on parr with season 1, that's the main thing I liked about it.
Even if s2 choreography isn't on the same level its still gonna be much better visually (compositing, softer designs etc) it's gonna make even average animation look good
first episode of season 2 was already a banger they upped their animation game by a dozen. sure they switched styles but damn does it fit the flash back
The shadows on the clothes def would get hard to draw for so long. I like the more washed look for S2. And the compositing will def look better next this time around. I am super excited for Season 2. I do wish they kept the angular faces/jawlines and Gojos eyes though. I loved that look!
Well, i think the art style change was for 1 of 2 reasons. We don’t know if the shibuya crisis portion of the season will look like this, so here’s my take: 1. If shibuya doesn’t look like this: the animators are trying to capture the more upbeat/reminiscing tone of the arc. Especially to set up for the subversion with the darker moments of the arc, if you know what I mean. 2. If shibuya does look like this, makes sense tbh. There’s so many fight scenes that all need to be embellished upon. Like way more fights than season 1
Arifumi Imai, the madlad who animated Levi vs Beast Titan, Levi Chase Scene and Saitama vs Genos is working on season 2. My worries for season 2 are extinguished
I love The New season, pretty much hyped for it. Shōta Goshozono Never fails to impress me when he directs an episode like In JJK Episodes 8 and 17. The camera work, compositing, That fluid animation, you just can't help but get excited man👽
One month to go. It's going to be the best birthday present I could have wished for. Also, I hope that the second part of the season, that is Shibuya, isn't going to be neglected, because they might just go apeshit for the first part, and then run out of steam for the second. (Shibuya is the goat here)
@@ugh5281 They have to adapt the full thing. Idk how else it would work. There is no stoping point after Gojo gets sealed which we know that's not where they will stop since it's a 2 cour season. I'm hoping they make 25 episodes like Mha does or maybe even 26 like Kny season 1. Shibuya would easily fit if they did that.
While Season 1 looked like a very well animated action series, Season 2’s new animation style gives JJK an identity of its own, providing a simple yet stylistic flare that injects so much more expression and emotion into its characters and world than the first season ever did.
Man this video really shed a new light on the good and the bad of season 1's art style and made me more aware. You did a great job :D!! Can't wait for season 2 !
I I prefer the exact line like in the first season, but I'm curious how the second season will turn out. If only they didn't spoil Gojo's eyes because that's what always made him stand out and in the trailer his eyes are... normal😢
in this arc gojo shows his eyes a lot more though. he's way more expressive as a teenager so they kind of have to show his eyes and his facial expressions.
I wish they'd make scene have more darker colors tho like season 1. The bright colors and shading, lighting, etc. in Season 2 doesn't feel like it fits well, and the darker tint in season 1 seemed to fit better with the vibe of the anime.
I’m going to be honest. I’m enjoying s2 way more than I did s1. S1 felt stiff at some moments, while season 2 feels really fluid. Also, s2’s camera positioning and colors feels so much more realistic/immersive. Season 1 was kinda boring for me, so I was abt to drop s2, but after watching the first episode and this week’s episode, I can proudly say that season 2 is a 100x better.
honestly i feel s1 animation was top tier, it was unique + good fight choreography now watching s2 feels like a drag some parts look good but i cant even stay on for 20mins while s1 i literally binged the entire thing in 2 days
The animation did got smoother but it lost the "jjk" touch it has in s1 and movie, those beautiful styled hands that definitely replicate manga's artstyle a lot, characters fking having chins specially females and gojo's cloudy eyes it all looks csm styled now
I pretty much have no problem with the new art style, but somethings just don't sit right to me😂,cus im used to their old style.Other tha that,i think the one with best animation probably JJK 0,yeah i know it's a movie, but it was so well done.
also in the first episode i can seen utahime reflection in the mirror which is pretty cool it was in the corner or something that detail wasn’t needed but it’s fire to see them doin small stuff like that
I dont think it was just directorial input that caused the shift in animation style. Keep in mind that MAPPA was set to animate Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan S4, and Hells Paradise immediately after JJK S1 wrapped production. MAPPA was a relatively more quaint studio before the release of JJK, and didnt have many anime that it was slated to release at the time. The difference in art quality between Dororo (the show MAPPA animated immediately before JJK S1) and JJK is remarkable to say the least, and that was what really put the studio on the map. Like you said at the beginning of the video, MAPPA really put their heart and soul into making the JJK adaptation, and it paid off. The unfortunate consequence of that is now, viewers expect the same if not better quality for the continuing arcs of JJK after S1, not only that, after S1, MAPPA all of a sudden was slated to produce not one, not two, but THREE additional anime around the same time. Not to mention the staff probably didn't catch a break before the release of JJK S1, cause they also HAD TO WORK ON BOTH AOT S4 AND THE JJK 0 MOVIE. And immediately after those premiered they had to work on CSM and Hells Paradise, WHILE ALSO CONTINUING TO PRODUCE AOT S4, somewhere along the line they also had adapt S2 of JJK, of course, but the point I'm getting at after all this is that, THESE GUYS CAN'T CATCH A BREAK. THERES VIDEOS ONLINE OF THE ANIMATORS AT MAPPA TIRED OUT OF THEIR MINDS, WITH LITERAL EYEBAGS, TRYING TO ANIMATE CSM. MAPPA hasn't even significantly increased its workforce after the success of JJK S1, so the workload is just much more intense for the same amount of employees, all the while their wages are marginally, if at all, raised. You can't tell me the lack of a proper workforce didn't at least influence the decision to make a more simplistic style. HOW COULD THEY AFFORD TO ANIMATE AT SUCH HIGH QUALITY WHEN THEY HAVE TO MEET A DEADLINE JUST TO FINISH ANIMATING AOT S4, AND THEN GET STARTED ON CSM S2, AS WELL AS HELLS PARADISE. THIS IS INSANE. Rushing = Lower Quality These people either need an ungodly raise for their hard work, or a break that lasts a whole year to spend planning, gathering resources/funds, and of course, HIRE MORE PEOPLE TO MAKE THE WORKLOAD EASIER. There's tons of people across social media that have displayed their skill in animation and studios like MAPPA would be wise to enlist their help to ease the burden of animating at such high quality, one after the other.
It looks to me like a lot got borrowed from Studio Binds work on Mushoku Tensei last season. The art style captured a beautiful but simple balance, allowing it to be so smooth during action sequences. I think this follows that same path and I'm so excited for it
Imagine if WIT took over JJK. Vinland levels of perfection for Shibuya would go HARD. I dint even notice it was simpler I jus thought it looked WAY better.

@TheFakeWeeb I don't understand why they can't do both art styles? Detailed and hard lines with shadows until a fight scene and then smooth it out. I hope the six eyes are still detailed

That would be cool but I assume it would take longer for season 2 to release
as the previous comment has stated, it would likely take more time. They are going to be capturing the ENTIRE Shibuya arc as well as star plasma vessel arc. That is an extraordinary amount of fight scenes
tbh i really like this new artstyle, kinda gives me huge chainsawman vibes too
After watching the season. I'm totally fine with the new art style.
Yeah, I agree with you that the less details, the more fluid/smoother the animations would be. It's the same thing for ranking of kings since they use a similar approach.
Also mob physco anime is also really good example for anmamazing animation thanks to simple design
Season 1 animation is such better
Just look how Dagon is in s2 he looks goofy…The special grade curse in s1 the trio met was more menacing with that animation…

Now that the first episode is actually out, i can safely say that I do in fact love season 2's animation style more
Thanks for making this video. Many people wew criticizing the new designs without thinking how it would the whole animation in general.
As an animator, season 2’s animation looks absolutely insane. It’s gonna be an amazing season 🔥
I'm just ready to see Toji animated. Episode 5 or 6 is going to be crazy y'all.

I say that because of this new art style, Shibuya arc will look better than i thought it could after reading the manga.
Season 1's animation style was amazing, i cant explain why but the animation style in season 2 just seems more aesthetically pleasing to the eye
JJK S2 hidden inventory arc animation were top class but due to tight schedule pressure and less time shibuya arc have some meltdown
As an animator, I would be mad if I was forced to make a smooth animation with a high quality details.
Thank you for defending this new JJK artstyle 🙏
No problem! Glad to hear an animators perspective on it 🙌🏼
People keep saying his eyes look worse, but that's because they didn't watch episode 4.
NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION, I'M OPEN FOR A BRAWL.
the megumi scene at 8:27 was most likely shota who animated it considering he directed that episode
The new animation is absolutely GORGEOUS. The S1 anime is obviously great as well but S2 is just so much smoother and in my opinion looks much better.
Hell not!

i believe the "new visiuals" is only for the hidden inventory arc. and we will go back to the standard in shibuya
I HIGHLY doubt it, 2 reasons:
Considering the release of the JJK 0 movie and chainsaw man S1, it would’ve taken too long for S2 to be well animated with S1’s heavy art style.
it won’t the character designs for Yuji, Megumi, Gojo, and crew was shown and they have same simpler design and less line work as the trailer
Lol no
Pls no
I believe your dream will come true 😢
my thing is that in fights, is just a zoomed in a character zoom out to shout the fight itself, back in again with almost no movment to go back zoom in the character. Where season 1, has movment all the time
“minimal/simpler art direction” and “time constraints” are contradictory? MAPPA needs to stop having so many projects going at once or quality goes down, that’s their issue.
Personally I don’t like the Hanami vine’s scene. If giving an inch is “simplifying the art for more dynamic movement” then they end up taking a mile by adding excessive dynamic movement, which makes it all a blur anyways.
i love the art style and animation style change. The little motion blur they do on the characters look seriously good
Lol people making up every reason to say that S2 (so far) looks better and it just doesn’t 😭😭.
trying to defend so bad it aint even working😂
Fr I really don't like S2's animation. Like they talking about the 'fluid motions' which Season 2 should have a lot more but to be honest unless you pay attention and nitpick very closely the motions of the characters are just perfect. So since motions don't really matter as much, we got a very cartoonish JJK (Sukuna vs Mahoraga was the biggest disappointment) for no reason. 😭😭
I actually loved the more muted warm filters and color palette on season 1, it was so different from anything else. The Hanami fight was SO GOOD!
Even if s2 choreography isn't on the same level its still gonna be much better visually (compositing, softer designs etc) it's gonna make even average animation look good
I'm so jazzed about season 2 it's insane 😩👌🏻
i think the more simple style might just be for gojo's backstory arc.
first episode of season 2 was already a banger they upped their animation game by a dozen. sure they switched styles but damn does it fit the flash back
The shadows on the clothes def would get hard to draw for so long. I like the more washed look for S2. And the compositing will def look better next this time around. I am super excited for Season 2. I do wish they kept the angular faces/jawlines and Gojos eyes though. I loved that look!
Listen anyone who made Ranking of Kings will definitely revolutionize any series they are able to get their hands on
What i dont get it
meanwhile AOT Levi vs Kenny scene being extremely detailed and extremely fluid at the same time
yeah but made in 7 months only that scene, nowadays industry doesn't have time for that, they have to do great job in less time
@@francescomastroianni963 that's true
It’s basically the Spectacular Spider-Man effect. A simpler design to allow for more fluid movement and action.
S1 has better quality action with no doubt
Yes, it's because sunghoo park direction in s1
bro was wrong
Well, i think the art style change was for 1 of 2 reasons.
We don’t know if the shibuya crisis portion of the season will look like this, so here’s my take:
The only worry would be the absence of sunghoo park, especially for the mahito fight at the end.
Arifumi Imai, the madlad who animated Levi vs Beast Titan, Levi Chase Scene and Saitama vs Genos is working on season 2. My worries for season 2 are extinguished
Vercreek cough cough😊
after watching the new episodes the new style fits Jujutsu Kaisen better imo
I love The New season, pretty much hyped for it. Shōta Goshozono Never fails to impress me when he directs an episode like In JJK Episodes 8 and 17. The camera work, compositing, That fluid animation, you just can't help but get excited man👽
The visuals from Shibuya arc went from mid to absolute beast after the latest ep yesterday, the mix of 3d and 2d in s2 really feels refreshing.
So far season 1 graphics are better than season 2
by far too
new animation style kinda reminds me the the way how USSR’s cartoons were produced (Treasure Island for instance)
One month to go. It's going to be the best birthday present I could have wished for.
Also, I hope that the second part of the season, that is Shibuya, isn't going to be neglected, because they might just go apeshit for the first part, and then run out of steam for the second. (Shibuya is the goat here)
Very well said and Ranking of Kings is another of my favorite shows.
So is S2 confirmed to have significant Shibuya scenes? I wasn’t sure if they’d be able to fit Shibuya into the season with Hidden Inventory?
they already confirmed multiple times that s2 will have shibuya. idk how much they'll adapt though, we'll have to see :/
Yes they’ve confirmed Shibuya and most likely will animate till the end (chapter 137 cliffhanger)
@@FakeWeeb Got it, thank you! That’s very hype.

While Season 1 looked like a very well animated action series, Season 2’s new animation style gives JJK an identity of its own, providing a simple yet stylistic flare that injects so much more expression and emotion into its characters and world than the first season ever did.

@@camsmith2182 It's that his eyes look very normal and not nearly as divine as in the movie or in the first season. There are no details at all.

Honestly I find the season 2 a lot prettier personally. A lot more emphasis on shape and form rather than overdoing it with shading and effect layers.
exactly
the lighting is better in the 2nd season
its easier on the eyes.
The animation did got smoother but it lost the "jjk" touch it has in s1 and movie, those beautiful styled hands that definitely replicate manga's artstyle a lot, characters fking having chins specially females and gojo's cloudy eyes it all looks csm styled now
Wouldn't it be better to mesh S1's detail for non action scenes with S2's smooth fight scenes be a good middleground?
I pretty much have no problem with the new art style, but somethings just don't sit right to me😂,cus im used to their old style.Other tha that,i think the one with best animation probably JJK 0,yeah i know it's a movie, but it was so well done.
also in the first episode i can seen utahime reflection in the mirror which is pretty cool it was in the corner or something that detail wasn’t needed but it’s fire to see them doin small stuff like that
As a flashback arc I'll take it. As for the current time they may have to adapt something similar to season one to keep continuity.
Rushing = Lower Quality
These people either need an ungodly raise for their hard work, or a break that lasts a whole year to spend planning, gathering resources/funds, and of course, HIRE MORE PEOPLE TO MAKE THE WORKLOAD EASIER. There's tons of people across social media that have displayed their skill in animation and studios like MAPPA would be wise to enlist their help to ease the burden of animating at such high quality, one after the other.
I actually prefer this change. Season 1 was beautiful but often felt too busy and a bit harsh on my eyes.
It looks to me like a lot got borrowed from Studio Binds work on Mushoku Tensei last season. The art style captured a beautiful but simple balance, allowing it to be so smooth during action sequences. I think this follows that same path and I'm so excited for it

at first i was thrown off with the simpler art style but now i actually really love the change, it's very aesthetically pleasing and it works. even if you prefer the details in s1, it's just a matter of getting used to it. s2 looks promising as everything looks overall more put together. the compositing, digital effects, art direction etc look much better so i think it's an overall updrage from s1. i also fully trust shouta goshozono with JJK, it's gonna be his debut as a series director but he is definitely one of the most creative people in the industry currently and i can't wait to see what he does.
