My farther told me of the story of John Lee, his grandfather knew the man that built the gallows that John Lee was to hang from. A childhood friend of John Lee. The way they used to test the trapdoor was with the same weight as the convicted, in a sack, as you know, sack ' s don't have feet, this meant that the weight was distributed in a different manor. The carpenter used this to his advantage, and it allowed him to put a bias on the latch. John Lee was not saved be "Divine Intervention", but by a talented friend who believed he was innocent. Although, apparently he and the lady of the manor were frequent bed fellows.
We once had a trash chute at work that was designed somewhat like a trap door used for hanging and if too much weight was placed on it the release pin would bind and refuse to open. I think thats what happened here.
Didn’t you listen ? It was god that stepped in to save the convicted thief , but apparently god had the day off at the time of the brutal murder of the innocent woman though
In his autobiography, James Berry who was the executioner, told a subsequent inquest into the event that the reason the trap didnt open was that the whole gallows had recently been moved and that during the assembly the hinges were slightly misaligned. When there was no weight on them they functioned perfectly but when the prisoner stood on the doors the weight caused them to bow slightly and therefore jam. After moving to the US Lee died in 1945 and is buried in Milwaukee.
There was a Malaysian man who survived the hanging. Because of that particular case, original death penalty was amended to 'gantung sampai mati' which translates to *hang til death*
