"Change is hard to sell" Resident evil 3 remake as of recent comes to mind. It was not as well received as the second game because they straight up removed some portions of the game in order to speed up development whereas the second game had more time to be fully cooked. WoW's cataclysm expansion was not well received by majority of the player base because it took away some portion of its identity away from the players. What was a game that you grew up playing for a few years is no more and instead you have something else in place. Runescape going into evolution of combat had the same reaction from the players as well. Half the player base had quit basically over night. Look at how well iphones sell every year. It's more proof that people want the same old item with as small change here and there. The overall product has to remind them of the one they are giving up for the new one. People, as a whole, do not like change in general. If something is completely different to the point where you no longer recognize it, it's a total turn off and the consumer is not going to be interested in learning the new product and buying it. This whole push for constant change in video games, is the result of reviewer critique. If a game is not changed all that much, the reviewers point it out and the developers take that feed back and try and reinvent the wheel in a formula that has already been proven to be favorable with the player base. But the players' voice is not what's heard here. It's their wallets, hence the vote with your wallet phrase. This also means that there is a divide between how professional critic people think about a product and it's actual consumer. Because the critic may not even devote all their time to learning the lore and game play of a game as generations go by and sequels are released and lore is added in. They sit down to play a game knowing virtually nothing about it. They're not a hard core fan. They just judge based on first impressions.
Speaking of critics. Is there a game that critics hate but fans love? Usually I find games that critics and fans like, or games that critics say it is average but fans hate with passion.
RE3 remake certainly came too soon after 2, and with a shitty multiplayer nobody wanted. If they do a RE4 or Code Veronica remake they better not fuck it up.
This is why I consider "professional" critics' opinion on anything to be factually invalid. Game series survive longer when developers listen to customer critique versus listening to critics who know less than nothing on video games.

No joke, this video may have been about games but so much of what ActMan was saying also applied to the Disney sequels, specially when he talked about how how important it is to innovate without alienating your audience. Disney somehow failed spectacularly by refusing to innovate all the superficial aspects of the sequels (same setting, same story, same spaces ships, same character archetypes except worse) while at the same time taking fundemental Star Wars elements and altering them beyond recognition (Luke Skywalker, Force lore, Palpatine's death). They managed to capture the worst of both worlds and it ends up making the sequels only Star Wars in name. It has lasers, lightsabers, and spaceships but it doesn't feel like Star Wars, just a hollow shell. And that mades me so indescribably sad. :-(

Agent 005 I’d argue that there has been both improvements and problems, 2 steps forward and one step back. In the long run sure they’re still managing to stride ahead of their wrongdoings, but only to some degree. They have an entire studio less of help, and they’re also having some other developers work on a different project entirely. They don’t have as much manpower on Destiny as fans and haters alike would wish to think. I personally enjoy Destiny 2, I still enjoy the experience no matter how “bad” it gets.

@Master Chief Petty Officer Spartan John-117 For story, characters, and gameplay, absolutely. But in terms of game world, GTA 5 stomps on 4. My biggest issue with 4 was that the world just felt so lifeless that there wasn’t much point in exploring. Compare all the things you could do in San Andreas to 4 and you realize just how much was taken out. Bare bones customization for outfits, cars, property, houses, random encounters, etc. GTA V took more inspiration from SA which meant exploring the world was actually an adventure instead of a chore. It’s not that 4 didn’t have them, it’s that they were a pale comparison to SA and by extension 5.

Yeah, there’s a definite issue where companies just try to superficially copy other franchise’s successes. Like I’m a massive fan of Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft is obviously tired of making AC games, they don’t wanna do it anymore. But AC makes a lot of money. So when they make their historical action RPGs, instead of making a good action RPG they try to do an action RPG with AC mechanics and premises and it ends up hurting the action RPG experience. Like the best thing to do is to divert the IP. Have your historical action RPGs and cut out all the AC fat, build up that IP and give those games their own identity. Then revisit the AC franchise on occasion and focus on what made AC, AC.
Yeah if I remember origin completely fucked to the assassinations with the introduction to the completely unnecessary levelling system that made the signature mechanic just not work on certain enemies because if the Leviel difference as well as artificially limit the areas you can do missions in because lower levels don’t dole out enough XP and no matter your skill going to a higher level just destroys you

There are franchises that I get fatigue even from someone mentioning them, like Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty -franchises. Then there are franchises that never tire me out no matter how much I play them, like The Legend of Zelda or Metroid -franchises for example. What is the biggest difference between them? The first group gets new releases annually and the devs are afraid of trying new stuff (nor they don't have time for it), while the second group only has 1-2 games per console generation and every game tries something new while sticking to its roots at the same time.
It's a different philosophy on why you green light a game: Nintendo: Is it a new experience? Does it have its own identity or a defining feature? EA, Ubisoft, etc: We need more money with little risk, how much can we recycle for a new installment and get games sales + new micro transaction economy?

Despite everything dragon age 2 had against it the story itself and and characters are still really good, you can tell the devs did care about their work and did what they could in 2 years, the game was always a little overhated because of the controversy
Yes, I actually liked Dragon Age 2 and after a couple playthroughs...it's actually my favorite, mainly because the Hawke and his companions have the best chemistry and their happy-go-lucky vibe from one adventure to the next was done very well. The thing is that 2 is split into three acts that all could've been their own game, Hawke getting their fortune, the Qunari's attempted takeover, and the beginning of the Mage Rebellion. But since they were all in one game they weren't really given room to breath as their arcs aside the Mage Rebellion since it was the main problem and theme throughout the game. Yes it sucks that they were lazy on the map designs and changed the Darkspawns' design, which was a horrible decision, but then they made the Qunari fucking awesome and made them better than just, "really tale humanoid." Too bad they changed their culture lore a bit though, and then copletely retconned it in Inquisition. I liked the picture Sten had painted of Qun, why they changed it so that it seems more like he misinterpreted parts of it was dumb. But yeah DA2 has a lot of pros to it, it's just a shame it has just as many cons.

@Big Boss not just me metacritic does the talking last of us 1 story is way better than 2nd story but last of us 2 gameplay is way better than the first one
Big Boss no the story is bad. What’s the point of making a sequel to a game with a completed story arch? The revenge story arch itself shouldn’t have been stretched to an entire game’s length and Ellie doesn’t even kill Abby in the end. There’s no reason she should spare her as she has just trekked months, wasting supplies, losing friends, getting serious injuries, etc just to find one person. 1 memory flashback is probably not enough to have an entire character change happen in a minute and convince themselves that letting someone you’ve wasted tons of supplies on is worth it. It’s even worse that Abby doesn’t just kill Ellie afterward since there’s no reason for her to let someone she know nows is following her to live and on one is going to notice if she does. It’s a post apocalyptic world and no one in their right mind is going to be civilized

Im sure at this point you can get all the content in the game for much cheaper at this point, but the point is you shouldnt HAVE to buy expansions to keep up with the game, but that's exactly what D1 and D2 have done, you finish the current story, get maxed out, then boom here's another 20-30$ expansion so you can do the exact same thing to get a bigger power level, and get new cosmetics and maybe a few new exotics. The game itself relies on addictive gameplay of grinding and grinding over and over doing the same thing, just keeping you occupied till the next expansion, and this is objectively disgusting game design. Ill admit I played tf out of destiny 1 but I was getting very sick of the business model after TTK and once 2 came out I just said nah fuck that, it's literally the same game with the same business model, you can like the game but you cant disagree with the points Ive made, they are true if you do any amount of research.
@@owentourtelotte4094 And to answer the expansions questions, it depends. On the other hand imagine if you didnt buy Destiny's dlc's, you'd be quick to realize once you max your stats there's little reason to play anymore, it has quite shallow gameplay and little real difference in weapons and gameplay, the crucible is fun but I dont think anyone plays Destiny strictly for crucible.

"Change is hard to sell"
Resident evil 3 remake as of recent comes to mind.
@@takezokimura2571 critics hated the first monster hunter game. fans loved it. that's all I'm gonna say.

For story, characters, and gameplay, absolutely. But in terms of game world, GTA 5 stomps on 4. Compare all the things you could do in San Andreas to 4 and you realize just how much was taken out.

Nintendo has been playing the long game for decades. I'm actually curious when EA will cannibalize itself because it didn't hit its numbers.
I can never get tired of AC...
Unless they release something like Odyssey again ☹️
It's a different philosophy on why you green light a game:
Nintendo: Is it a new experience? Does it have its own identity or a defining feature?
EA, Ubisoft, etc: We need more money with little risk, how much can we recycle for a new installment and get games sales + new micro transaction economy?
Naeem Wicomb I’m the same but with call of Duty with the exception of advanced movement. For assassins creed I hope they go back to their old mechanics after Valhalla. What are your thoughts on the old and new mechanics?
@@ProperlyBasic11 ubisoft is very generous with their micro transactions
@@leoncoben6983A game with so many cons from the gameplay to the story should never rank among the best games.

Except that Final Fantasy has a different cast of characters per installment, and Mario has the same protagonist and cast for every game. This is where you use the term "indirect" or "thematic" sequel, where the sequel has a new cast of characters.

SJW trash.

Agree with all except destiny 2, Ill admit they were fun at their core, but destiny 1 turned into a cash grabbing scheme towards the end and then destiny 2 was pretty much made just to keep grabbing money from you with every inevitable expansion.
@@bigwillicus4035 i agree about destiny 1, but after they removed the ability to buy engrams, how is destiny 2 a cash grab? expansions? are expansions seen as inherently cash grabby now? am i missing something?
@@owentourtelotte4094 I looked it up, and so far if you were to purchase every expansion since launch the total price would rack up to roughly $170.
Destiny's expansions ARE cash grabby, you are forced to purchase the expansions to even keep up with anyone else who has, to give you an example of a good expansion think of any Dark Souls DLC's or GTA 4's DLCs, both add new story content but dont force you into buying them in order to keep the games enjoyable or compete with other players.
