The killing actually occured during "Under My Thumb" and was caught on camera and shown in the film "Gimme Shelter", but it became an urban legend that it happened during "Sympathy." "Sympathy" was taken out of the set for a few years, but that was as much because of all the new material from "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile On Main Street" as anything else. There are several books on Altamont, but the ones by Stanley Booth and Sam Cutler stand out, as they were both there at ground zero as it happened.

yes, we could drink at 18, we had smoking areas at high school, and we were there was more freedom in this country for everyone that has ever been or will ever be again. everything was simple compared to now, and look at the music from the 70's, it reflects the way of life then

I didn't get to see the Rolling Stones till 1981 and it was much calmer than this concert, this Altamont concert is way too crazy for me. Hell's Angels as their security was a bad idea!

I'm a child of the 60s and 70s and I know EXACTLY what he's saying. I don't think you could smoke wherever you wanted in high school, and the reason you could then was because the smoking age was 16 but it was confined to a smoking area that would be watched by school staff or even police because people would smoke pot or do other drugs in those smoking areas.
Outside of school we could smoke wherever we wanted as long as we were of legal smoking age, 16. Now, we smoked as elementary school kids so we didn't do that out in the open because you know, family image? Parents getting upset at you?

They started playing it live again in 1975 I think. This is an historic moment, as it captures the collapse of what the Beatles created. In a few hours at Altamont, the Stones destroyed it all. It was the end of the 60s. So an important moment, but a terrible version of the song because of all the chaos. The studio track is one of the greatest songs of all time. Been to 5 Stones shows. They are easily the greatest live act ever in my opinion.

Yes they did play Sympathy for the Devil live again many times, saw them at the Glastonbury Festival perform it a few years ago and there was a large steel Phoenix above them on the performance area of the pyramid stage especially made to stretch and breathe fire only when they played Sympathy for the Devil - utterly unforgettable!

The 70s, especially the early 70s, had their conflict with the Vietnam war going on. We were drafted at 18 years old but you had to be 21 to vote. So basically all those that were conscripted had no voice or say so towards the war. The average age of those with boots on the ground in Vietnam was 19. Those soldiers that came back on leave or had put in their time in the war were treated poorly by the hippies and those against the war by throwing trash at them and calling them baby killers. It was a pretty fucked-up time for politics. That said, the music during that time was great!

This was the tragic end of the 60s love and peace era. Tragic. Everything went after this. It was bad after the Manson murders but this was the ultimate low. I was a child of the 60s and this affected all of us badly. It was almost as if we saw the writing on the wall. Lots of big name artists refused to go on stage even before this happened because they could sense the way things were heading. Play this song live where the audience are just there to enjoy it.

Perhaps a bit culturocentric, there's more than a little USA bubble... E.g who or what is "the Manson murders". Not on my school reading list. And some dickhead dies at a concert, ...

This concert exposed that all the drugs and free love had consequences. Overdoses and violence come along with those things and this concert just had bad vibes all around Mick got knocked cold getting off the helicopter by some kid then throw in the Hells Angels and you have total chaos. As it turns out Woodstock was the exception not the norm when you had crowds this big and are loaded on all kinds of substances. By 1970 bands like Black Sabbath and the Alice Cooper group came along to put a stake into the heart of the love and peace generation.

Could have been along with the outtakes from Exile On Main Street the actual biggest gatefold album of the 70s. Never released this is were the myth of the Stones doesn't hold up . They even tried to rip off the Hells Angels. Well they stole the band as well. See Hill Side Blues for the greatest Stonerz track no official release. Then ask your self if you feel cheated? When the Angel whispered in Mick's ear, I always imagined that whatever The Angel said, Mick kinda paused a second and then resumed dancing more like a rooster than ever, and it's the most Dionysian thing I've ever seen. If you watch the documentary you might see what I see. you might not. I think Meredith Hunter was trying to put the gun down and maybe did and then tried to run but was murdered instead. I think he was set up but a jury found the Angel who stabbed him not guilty. I think that's complete bullshit. Meredith Hunter was black and 19. Hell's Angels are racist. Do the math. Great reaction.
