Hello Paul - Greetings from Poland on New Years Day
Pembridge - the home of my Mums grandmother. I've been there many times as a child. This video brought back many happy memories.
2023 - you have been extremely busy. Was it 148 videos this year? That is amazing. I'm looking foward to spending some quality time with you in 2024, revisiting places and sites we have been to before and exploring ots of new places too.

Yes, it was 148 videos this year - 149 if you count this one which went out a bit before midnight in 2023.
Pembridge was a chance discovery when I was perusing a map looking for something else. It must have been a great place to visit as a child too. Apart from the cars, I would think that little has changed.
      Thanks so much!

You have been so busy over the last year creating so much quality content! It’s been a joy to watch and to collab with you too. Loved this video. The village looks gorgeous and I can imagine how it would be on a summers day with people picnicking on the green. Hope you have a very happy, healthy 2024 as you continue to create content.

Yes, I hadn't been to Pembridge before but I have been to its better known neighbour, Eardisland, another very attractive village.
I really enjoyed my day filming here, despite the heavy rain at times.
Yes, I would imagine that would be a really lovely riverside location in the spring 🌱🌼
Thanks for the collabs, and hope you also have a very happy and healthy 2024 too, and I wish every continued success with your wonderful South West Sundays channel.

Happy new year to you, Paul, thanks for all your lovely videos. I stayed in Shepton Mallet, just before lockdown, and happened to be staying in the old part of the town which I found fascinating , with it's walkways and bridges criss crossing, snd the strange names to the roads, and what purports to be the oldest existing prison in the UK, have you done a video on that?

Yes, I had planned to do something on Shepton Mallet prison (as you say the oldest in the UK) but it recently, apparently closed permanently. I have since learnt that there are plans to reopen it though, but news on it seems a bit sketchy. Yes Shepton Mallet is an interesting town with a wonderful S&D viaduct too. Certainly one to cover in the future.

Lovely, despite the monsoon ! Even in that weather the village looks interesting and inviting. Lovely sight and sound of the bell tower and good to show the world that in Herefordshire many/most churches are open and many are full of interest - for instance, there is a hole in the West door at Pembridge made by musket fire in/shortly after 1646. Brave of you to make it to the green, but it is lovely in fine weather and we often take grandchildren there and try not to drown them. Half a mile past the river bridge is Pembridge station and goods shed (closed passengers 1955, goods 1964), all still there and in good condition. It was on the Leominster - Kington - Presteigne - New Radnor branch, of which a fair bit remains. Happy and productive New Year and many thanks for mention of my Dursley comment !

Yes, I felt privilaged to have been inside the bell tower, as it was chiming mid-day.
      The tapestries were charming too.
I did drive to the station at Pembridge after I finished filming, but I did not feel comfortable taking an image of it as it is a private residence now, but it looks remarkably well preserved. I did record a bit about the Leominster-Kington line too for this vlog, but I felt it made the video too long, so I cut it out from the final edit. Sadly, it looks like little of the line is walkable now, with no rights of way near it.
Incidentally, as it is more local to you than me I think, do you know the latest about Titley Junction Station (a few miles to the west of Pembridge) ? It was a private railway there, but the website has now closed I think.
      Thanks again,
and Happy New Year and thanks for the comments.

Seasons greetings Paul!! What a video this was, I hope you didn't go down with a cold after what looked like a drenching.
Pembridge is a picture postcard place. I don't think I've ever seen a bell tower quite like that. Well done to you for capturing the noise of the escapement and the 12 midday peel. The tapestry was a marvel too, lots of fine detail, I think I spotted some Morris dancers in there!! It's a county that I really don't know at all, thanks for taking us there.
It would be very hard to select a favourite or even a top five. I really like the ones that inspire me to find out more or surprise me, two come to mind. 1). The first Leominster canal where you found the visitors book in the aqueduct. 2) The Titanic Steelworks, spent a happy few hours looking at the history of this one. Both fit the bill!!
As to suggests for the future I have two:
    1) A visit to the Tor on Dartmoor that is the basis of your opening screen. I think it might be Vixen Tor.
    2) Well I'm a Wessex Man so would love to see something from Thomas Hardy country, there is a trail, one that stands out is Maumbrey Rings which appeared in the Mayor of Casterbridge.
But you surprise and inspire me each time so what works best for you really.
Back home today had a great time in Cordoba, I even went on two treasure trails, crossed an enormous Roman bridge which provided a great vantage point for 4 of the 11 watermills in the city. As we walked around the old town we came across a civic band who finished their set with the Radetzky March. And to cap it all walking back to my car I stumbled across a huge chimney in the middle of a housing estate!!
All the best for the forth coming 13.07 moons!!

Good morning David - I got up a bit late this morning, 6am instead of my usual 5am.
It has already gone well past 8am now done all the household chores.
      Sorry for the delay!!
All great suggestions! I do hope that I can get to Dorset soon - it means an early start though - there is a through train from my local station to Southampton, but it leaves at 4.45am - I'll need to catch, it if I have any hope of doing South Dorset in a day. I can get onto the Weymouth line from there. The Bristol route takes too long.
Yes, I really don't know why it doesn't get much attention; unlike Dorset, it does have a motorway!
Looks like you have been having lots of adventures of your own recently. Love that civic march with the Radetzky March. Brilliant!
Hope you have a great week!
      Take care,
      Paul

@@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul, golly you are an early riser. Nuria's a school teacher so I try and take the same holidays as her. School starts again next Monday.
Today is a local holiday in the city "el toma de Granada", the taking of Granada. It commemorates the taking of the last islamic stronghold in Spain in 1492.
What I found interesting is that Cordoba was taken in 1246, it's about 180 miles away. In fact the repossession of Spain was so gradual that it is reflected in the names of places. If you look at the map you will see the names of many towns ending with "de la frontera", perhaps the largest and most famous is Jerez (which translates to sherry in English) which has the full name of Jerez de la frontera. There are many many of these I keep on finding new ones!!.
I'll tell you about the treasure hunts another time!!

Thank you Paul for another enjoyable video. It certainly was a 'soaker' the day you went to Pembridge. Fortunately you had some breaks here and there with a bit of sunshine. I especially liked the church and bell tower and found it fascinating how they built a totally separate structure for the bells. The public greens area by the river also looked like a lovely place to sit and relax on a nice warm weather day whilst basking in the sun. Great place for a little picnic.
You mentioned at the end of the video if anyone has any suggestions regarding places to see. I don't know if this is applicable or not but it's in Devon which I believe covers your travels. I'd love to see Tiverton if possible. My reason being is that I grew up in a New England town by that same name. I've read that Tiverton, England has a castle located there which I'd like to see. My great-grandparents on both sides of the family are from England and so it was a real treat having lived in Kent for 12 years. Tracing my lineage all the way back to those who came to the States via the Mayflower was quite the experience. It was good fun visiting the towns where John Alden and Priscilla Mullins came from. (My earliest known ancestors to arrive in Plymouth, MA.) So if you ever make a visit to Tiverton and do a video on it, I'd love to see it.
Wishing you a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year in 2024.

Yes, Tiverton is very viable to do a video on - there is a railway station about 7 miles away, and a good bus service into town from there.
It is an unusual Devon town - very industrial, like a Lancashire mill town - in fact it still has a large textile mill there. It sits right on the River Exe. The employees of the mill originally came from Leicestershire - I will say more about it in the video - fascinating tale!
Great suggestion, and thank you! Yes, there is a castle there too, which has a museum - I shall have to time it to when it reopens for the new season.
Happy New Year to you too, and thanks for a great comment!

Thank you very much for your reply Paul. Always so nice to hear from you.
I'm really pleased that you will consider Tiverton as one of your travel destinations over the course of the year. From what I read online regarding the castle museum's open time, it's available from Easter through October. Earlier this morning I took a few moments to Google search information about the area and also looked at a few images. During my time in England, I'd hoped to see Tiverton but unfortunately never made my way there. It will be fun to see it through your video however if you do indeed decide to add it to your list. Whilst living abroad I did manage to see a fair amount of places in the UK but not too much of the west country unfortunately. It was on the list but duty called me back to the US before I had the opportunity to visit the areas you primarily video. Watching your travels has helped to make up for what I missed in person.
I'm really looking forward to watching more of your upcoming videos in the days ahead. I'd very much like to make a donation to your outing to Tiverton if you decide to venture that way so please let me know in advance if you can. Maybe you can treat yourself to a lunch out somewhere, or petrol for your car.
Take good care Paul and many thanks again for all of your lovely, interesting and informative videos.

Just a quick reply as I am off filming again today.
I have just seen that in the very high winds that the neighbouring castle to Tiverton's, Bickleigh Castle, just a few miles away, sadly lost a 11th Century turret yesterday - it collapsed after 80 mph winds battered it.
I will leave Tiverton until the castle reopens so I can do the town properly.
You could always do a super thanks after I have done it, if you like it, but please don't feel pressure to do so. That's very kind of you to think of me though.
      Thanks so much for replying.
      Take care,

Many thanks for the update Paul regarding Bickleigh Castle. I'm terribly sorry to hear that one of the 11th Century turrets collapsed. Those are hurricane force winds and can cause severe structural damage.
Tiverton will still be there for future days and visits so no hurries on that. I'm very grateful that you're willing to place it on your list of towns to tour whenever time permits.
As far as a donation towards your outing to Tiverton, I'll certainly be pleased to do as you suggested in your comment reply. Either that or prior to the occasion and you can just save it for the day.
I hope that you're having a wonderful day filming wherever you are and whatever today's travel destination point has brought you to.

Sorry you got wet in this last video of the year! I have never heard of Pembridge - I don’t suppose the inhabitants want loads of visitors as we saw in Bourton - on - the Water! But what a lovely ‘chocolate box’ village! The separate bell tower/ building was fascinating to see and it was good to hear the bells ringing. I thought the church was beautifully decorated for Christmas- the font’s greenery arrangement was lovely & they had an arrangement at the base of the font too!
I have never seen a year’s review as I joined in February. 148 videos!!! They are all of such a high calibre too! I’m pleased you have doubled your subscribers in a year. You work very hard and the quality of your uploads reflects this. Thank you & looking forward to your content next year!
