I used to patrol I-40 from Barstow to Kelbaker Road (76 miles) when I was assigned to the Barstow CHP office in the early 80's. I really liked working the desert, but there was usually no back up way out there. Had to be careful.
Wow what a beautiful trip. My wife and I are going to follow the whole route 66 next summer. Hopefully anyways. Thanks for the great videos Russ, keep up the great work!!!
Take another look at that Lava and the Mountains surrounding the entire desert...Those mountains are the rim of the Super Volcano...you are in the Caldera !
The Mojave Preserve is a great recreation area. Yes there is camping there mostly primitive. Many places for off roading, especially the Mojave Road that runs through part of the Preserve. Go prepared as there are no services.
Hi Russ, Love your videos. I am in the U.K. Bought an old car in L.A which was registered in Mohave. Confuses me as the owner lived in L.A. Perhaps you could shed some light for me. Keep up the good work. Best regards, David.
You know TH-camr Camper van keven has a ( Hightop forsale) All setup.. its shown on his site a few weeks ago. Just figured I would pass it along. Good luck on your search.
Hi Russ. I did it! I found a 2019 Mule Pro FXR. Since watching you and seeing you with it looked like the perfect fit for us. Thanks for the great travel videos. Maybe do more with the trails around quartzsite. Merry Christmas. Ken and Kathleen Spokane, Wa. 🍍
The offramp @ kelbaker rd is one of my favorite spots to make a pit stop on the 40. I drive up a lil further past the sign you stopped at and park at the turn out on the left to stretch the legs. It's also the spot the chp likes to hang out to catch the speeders on the freeway lol.
That Route 66 has been used in numerous TV, Movie, Commercial's and Music Videos. Sometimes when sections are closed for use is because a studio or film and TV makers have the Department of Transportation close it until they are finished using it.
I was disappointed when you first landed your Drone...but then you said you wanted to see what the Green Sign said...(Exactly what I was wondering!) I was sure you were going to send the Drone to see what the sign said ! Thanks for taking us along !
Russ I was just there on the 23rd where you stopped on that road to Kelso. I really wanted to go see it. there is a ghost town and a railroad station I wanted to film. Can wait for you to go there. Lots of history there too. Anyway hope you had a great holiday.
For out of towners watch that SAND off the roadside. it's nice highways has been putting in pull offs from time to time, but I'd pak a shovel, grip board, and other gear if you're doing any pull offs for any reason. Or AWD.
I think it would be very interesting to your watchers if you did some drone footage when you leave Kelso on the way to Baker you cross a large volcanic field that is really fascinating you change total environments across the desert before you get to Baker I think that would be interesting to a lot of folks keep up the good work
There's a lot of shooting going on out in the desert. You leave a car abandoned out there and come back a couple years later guaranteed it will be full of bullet holes.
I traveled through that area about 20 years ago, before it was a Preserve. Was driving back from Vegas and took a detour at Nipton Rd. to Ivanpah Rd. to avoid a crash on I-15. There are sand dunes and a cute train station in Kelso. When I got to I-40, I just kept going south through Amboy, then to 29 Palms, through the mountain pass to I-10.
The Mojave Preserve if definitely a worthwhile trip. There's Keslo, with the old Union Pacific Station and Harvey House, which is now a museum. There's nearby Kelso Dunes, which are called "booming dunes" because of the booming sound the sand makes. And all of the volcanic cinder cones between Kelso and Baker. All along just one road!
I worked for the park service at Mojave National Preserve and lived in Kelson, just up from the railroad depot is some park service housing. I had a good time, except for the administration..
Before it was a preserve you would see only the trains passing through. We’d ride for days not seeing another rider or camp site. You could ride just about anywhere between Amboy and Baker with out issue. The Preserve designation brought organized camp sites, more people and tons of off road restrictions. Lots of tree huggers like the place now, so stay in the designated ride areas or chance being booted out of the area for good. It’s still a great place to get lost over a long weekend.
Wow, that sure was the Long, Long Way to Riverside? Added an additional 150 miles of a whole lota nothing but sand & scrub brush! Why not just take i10 right out of Q? The Iconic Mojave Trail runs from Laughlin to Barstow right thru the Mojave Preserve. About 130 miles of historic dirt roads.
Road to kelso depot and on to Baker got kelso dunes and nothing but desert not reception no services and no cops too so if your broke down it will take along time for help
I would not have associated Arizona with a volcano. There is an inactive volcano West of my home here in Grayson County, Virginia. Mount Rogers (750 million years ago).
Just in case anybody is interested in camping in the Mojave natl preserve... You Tubers Fate Unbound just uploaded a video today about boondocking at Highway 40 and Kelbaker Rd....funny how that works sometimes
Here’s an overview of the Mojave camping options. We camped at Hole in the Wall and I know you would love it! KELSO DUNES in the Mojave Desert plus Camping tips galore for you! th-cam.com/video/Ebjw84Sp2IQ/w-d-xo.html
I love the wide open vistas of the desert .

What is the speed limit out there? All you can run? lol
@@pl747 Well, there's a lot of wide open spaces out there, butit is patrolled.
@@golferpro1241 Thank you.
@Dave Smith Yep, that's true, however, there were a lot of fatal accidents on that two lane road. Most were head on collisions.
Are there fuel stations in this area?
Thanks for the ride. As an Australian. travelled from L.A to Grand Canyon in 79. Not been back since, so ta for the memories
Wow what a beautiful trip. My wife and I are going to follow the whole route 66 next summer. Hopefully anyways.

Thank You Russ, for alerting me about the Mojave National Preserve, short cut from I-40 to I-15 through Kelso, CA !!! ---never thought of that....
I used to work at themohave nation preserve, it was a great placebo work and see, you really need to visit the preserve.
Good to see it, I haven’t been that way since 1978
Have a good one and keep em coming
You passed the very cool area of Hole In The Wall (with campground) in the preserve when you passed Providence Mountain exit .
Stan Watkins that’s at the Essex rd off ramp.
The Mojave Preserve is a great recreation area. Yes there is camping there mostly primitive. Many places for off roading, especially the Mojave Road that runs through part of the Preserve. Go prepared as there are no services.
Thanks for all the great videos Russ. Merry Christmas from the UK.
Thanks again...I always wanted to see the Mohave. Happy winter!

You really need to visit the lava fields, near Baker. They use o sell lava stone before it became a preserve.
Nice to see it in daylight. I drove this part at night last January.
I love the Barstow area! Lived there when I was a kid.
Sweet vid BuddyBoy 🎄🐿 🎄

Hey, would you please tell me what is at the "Red Barn"? I think it is either in Ludlow or Newberry Springs.
Merry Xmas and thanks for this years free RV site seeing tours.
I was born in lone pine Ca'..Im a desert rat!...thx for the content!
You are just east of Newberry Springs and then Barstow.

Do they get the drinking water from them ponds? Was wondering how they got water out there.
695200 Acres is the Mojave in the Preserve just a small. Dot
If your going to Joshua Tree..Take kelbaker road..
