  • Episode # 4 In his video, we dive deep into the 2003 Buell Firebolt XB9R and see how it stacks up against today's sport bikes. We'll explore the pros and cons of this retro riding machine and answer key questions:
    How fast is it really?
How fast was it from the factory?
The modifications I've made to make it my own
    Is it worth owning today?
Can you still get parts for it?
    How does it handle?
Do people recognize what it is?
We'll also highlight the unique features of the Buell Firebolt, such as fuel in the frame and oil in the swingarm for a low center of gravity, and provide a brief history on the Buell XB9R and XB12R models.

Brief History of the Buell XB9R and XB12R:
The Buell Firebolt series, including the XB9R and XB12R, were innovative sport bikes produced by Buell Motorcycle Company, a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson, from the early 2000s. Known for their unique engineering solutions such as the fuel-in-frame design and oil-in-swingarm setup, these bikes were designed to offer a low center of gravity and exceptional handling. The XB9R featured a 984cc engine, while the XB12R boasted a 1203cc engine, both delivering a distinctive riding experience that combined American engineering with sporty performance.

Excellent showcase of your passion build, dude. XB9SX owner here, and I couldn’t agree more about the old school modernity of these motorcycles. Probably the sweetest ICE sport motorcycles ever built by American hands, I’m never selling mine.

My '03 I bought new, it has 80k miles on it and I still ride it regularly. It is bone stock and been well maintained with no issues. I'm here to tell you it has no problem pulling to red line in fifth gear at 140Mph, none what so ever. FYI !
I have and have had many different motorcycles from multiple manufacturers from around the world. It was and is my favorite bike over all of them even still after all these years.

I've got an 08 XB12R with drummer exhaust and IDS tuned ecu. I love that bike so much!! Plenty fast for me and sounds amazing. People are always curious about it and ask what it is.

I would like to see one these with hammer1275 cylinders and some head work and cams. Erik Buell in my eyes was genius. Too bad the Buel line didn't continue

Love your video. Too many negative Nancy’s online about Buells. It’s not a bike for everyone. They have their issues but personally I got 2 XB9S and I love it! 😸

Don't they have a bigger displacement version of this bike ? I'd like to see you review that one.

I call it jerky when cold. Gotta trust the engine to come back up and not give it more throttle till it warms up. Xb12x. I have been looking at the Buell race exhaust. Think the dual exhaust sounds better.

Have had four Buells, still have three. Done a few trips to Homecoming in East Troy.
Not sure what passing a Tesla has to do with this being able to compete with modern bikes. Great machine, but it was not a powerhouse when new 20 years ago, would not compete well against modern 600s unless it was a pro rider (vs non-professionals).

We have come a long way from manually tuning the bike to getting it done through a mobile phone.

Yep, if they are not spot on, they are slow. When I got mine, it was a pig. Proper tune and exhaust, and the fun starts.

I believe it can keep up on public roads at a legal pace. The faster the pace the Bell rider will need to output a higher level of effort compared to a modern bike of similar type.

I'd start with a KLR650. It fits us tall guys great, makes enough torque to be fun and usable w/o getting over your head as an inexperienced rider. It's also great bike for riding everywhere, rather than just pavement. I don't know where you live, but based on your username, I'm guessing you've got some good country to explore on a bike.

Stock is 7500. It's not recommended, but it is possible for a 500 bump to 8k. Though the race ecu. It seems very strong at 8k, however I wouldn't recommend holding it for long. And it still will not be achieved without a proper air/fuel tune. And not in open loop for risk of detonation. Realistic speed in ideal conditions is 136. My elevation and temp, and no wind is what gives the extra very briefly. It's amazing what just another 500rpm is good for on the top end. The best solution would have been for these to have a 6 speed. Unfortunately, even with all the trick things done for the time period with this bike, another gear Unfortunately was overlooked. Again, to be clear. This is not recommended. Most of this bikes rev time is below 6k rpm.

I dislike Harleys. Intensely ! I LOVE Buells...never ridden one but have a friend who has one. Could be a fruitier exhaust note but lovely bikes.
