I feel like the student showed a lot of humility letting us watch a lesson after not flying for a while. Just don't give up, fly more, practice the hard stuff and keep plugging away. It will be worth it in the long run.
sorry to be offtopic but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Merrick Julius Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Well I wish I had a flight instructor like you .You at least are forgiving and give helpful tips. My flight instructor I had, we went out for a "checkride prep" (For a 172 Plane BTW) and after the first mistake I made, he just built on it. It was all I could think about and it kept going and going and going.. I basically stopped flying because of it haha. Frustrating, I bet this guy at least kept trying.
Mr. Miller, You were brave! I once was thinking of doing some introductory flight training (a one time shot to see if my RC helicopter skills would cut it) but after seeing how easy it is to get out of shape, I think I will just crash the models & stay alive at this time. I love your videos, don't stop!
Michael, I'm going to be in trouble when I do my next flight, it has been 6 months. Yaw control of your student was lacking, that is something I didn't have a problem with amazingly. But that T-Bar on the R22 has got to be a killer on your wrist. Nice real experience video, Thank-You for sharing!
Super patient instructor!! Student, to me, seemed to not be as "one" with the helicopter. Student was laughing alot. People that make mistakes, laugh, I know. But, this is serious. This isn't a time for giggling and laughing. Student needed to be more relaxed. He needed to be in "one" with the chopper, not fighting it. I liked this instructor. Super patient and a supreme expert! Thanks for this vid. I sure wished when I was younger, I took helicopter lessons. Darn it..
The student has very little confidence, which is to be expected with how many hours he has. The confidence will happen in due time. I love the instructor, he is top notch
Wow, that was very interesting. I know how the student is feeling, I have the tendency to do the same type of thing he was doing. The stress of the 'observation' is less than the stress of the actual activity itself. (Its the old "I can do it perfectly when no one is watching.) B-)
You're my second favorite CFI to watch on TH-cam...other than my CFI in my vids ;). You do a great job teaching your students. Is the DFE "Greg" you refer to out of KHBI? If so, he was my DFE...super guy and a heck of a pilot. Great vids BTW
Michael , do you have any videos on a R66 ? great fan of your instructional videos helped me a lot thru out my PPL . Now i'm ready for my check ride on the R66 and haven't found good instructional videos out there . Great videos keep them coming !
its funny reading all these guys criticizing the student. its not as easy as it looks and everyone doesnt learn at the same speed. this is a perishable skill that takes practice. laughing does not mean he doesnt take it seriously...
I noticed he's taking his wrist off his knee when he's flaring for a quick stop or an auto. He needs to keep it planted and stable. Things started to really click when I realized I was doing that... 5 years ago.
everybody would fly with helicopters if they had the budget of owning a 300.000 dollar aircraft consuming fuel worth 110 dollar/h. gosh.. its not a matter of difficulty..
Instructor sounds a little nervous too. I haven't noticed any "Encouragement" or "Teaching"... Only Critiquing of the junior pilot. A little refresher would be better than just poking him and reminding him of what he doesn't know, or doesn't remember.
I thought it was going to be difficult to adjust to, but like most things in R22 it becomes pretty natural. Only thing I struggle with is getting used to the fact the throttle works in reverse of a motorcycle throttle, ie: twist toward you, power decreases and vice versa.
The fact that the student forgot to make the radio calls and therefore no radio call was made shows how incompetent this instructor is. A flight like this is high stress and people are likely to forget things. It is up to the instructor to make sure safety is maintained and that everything is done properly. If the student forgot to make the call then the instructor should have done it. Its like a student crashing the airplane and the instructor going "Well did you crash the airplane?" You should have stopped the student from crashing!
You are a very good instructor I don't know who this person was trained by but he is a licensed pilot and he forgot to announce his landing intentions??? Original trainer did a bad job, Check ride person issuing his license did a bad job. I understand a License is a License to learn but he is not there yet and needs more training. Just because you have an Instructor with you, you give up PIC you always fly as if you are the only one there.
kevin vt it's easy to look at a rusty student and think the people that trained them did a bad job, but often it's just not being current. If you haven't flown in months it's not easy to just pick back up again
kevin vt first, its just a stage check, not a check ride for issuing the license, this pilot obviously is not a licensed pilot but just a student pilot.
kevin vt I'm on board with Andy. I learned very early on in my time as a Surfman that operating anything is a perishable skill. I saw one of the best Surfman I know mess up a basic tow in moderate weather because he had only clocked 40 hours in a 6 month period handling the boat. Unless you do it constantly your skills will not be as sharp as they can be at their highest. Keep in mind too that there are three types of operators. Naturals, those who can be taught, and those who can't.
I feel like the student showed a lot of humility letting us watch a lesson after not flying for a while. Just don't give up, fly more, practice the hard stuff and keep plugging away. It will be worth it in the long run.

@Merrick Julius it worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Kane Lucas happy to help :)

These videos are so underrated. Tons to learn by observing another CFI & student lesson.
Mr. Miller, You were brave!

I love your videos, don't stop!
what a great video. This instructor rocks. Very knowledgeable and has the patience of jobe. great video all around. thanks
I gotta hand it to you helicopter CFI's. Congrats, you are smooth handling the flight with him. Thanks for posting.
don't use the death grip ,you only need light grip 2 /3 fingers , light n gentle movements
Nice instruction. The details matter and you certainly are detail oriented.
Those r22's are squirrelly, takes alot of hours for some to really develop the feel
i think you make a fine instructor, Well done
Michael,
I'm going to be in trouble when I do my next flight, it has been 6 months.

Helicopter looks wet. Did you just wash it?

Eric Boyles
the student didn't seem to be very serious and engaged in the flying instructions. that gets REALLY annoying
Wish my house had a pad with an r22 sat on it and an instructor like you on call!
Great video. Thank you both for posting.

its funny reading all these guys criticizing the student. its not as easy as it looks and everyone doesnt learn at the same speed. this is a perishable skill that takes practice. laughing does not mean he doesnt take it seriously...
You have good patience. Good instructor.
needs more GTA V in his life, best school around
Thanks for the video Michael, enjoy watching your instructional videos!
I noticed he's taking his wrist off his knee when he's flaring for a quick stop or an auto. He needs to keep it planted and stable. Things started to really click when I realized I was doing that... 5 years ago.
This student is a fixed wing transport pilot seen on tv????
If it was easy, everyone would be doing it and the sky would be crowded.
everybody would fly with helicopters if they had the budget of owning a 300.000 dollar aircraft consuming fuel worth 110 dollar/h. gosh.. its not a matter of difficulty..
Please show an update with this guy!
Instructor sounds a little nervous too. I haven't noticed any "Encouragement" or "Teaching"... Only Critiquing of the junior pilot. A little refresher would be better than just poking him and reminding him of what he doesn't know, or doesn't remember.
I Agree.
Leslie Ortiz
yeah, but the junior doesn't seem to be focused or care enough about what he's doing.
thinking about doing this! looks like so much fun!!!!
How did you get the audio from the headsets?
Looked a bit scary every now and then there. I really wish I would have chosen this line of work. I could never afford it now. =(
What type of camera set up are you using, I want to video my flights with audio.
Excellent instructor!
Nice videos Michael
great instructor!
Great info and nicely presented.
You are a great instructor
Lovin these lessons
Can you show how you mount your camera?
I can't wait until I can start learning to fly.
Wut? No approach call???
Your patience would rival a monk
How much does it cost to get this license?
Great instructor
Very nice. Thanks Michael.
Well that was stressful.
In an Airplane you shoot for the runway, In a Helicopter you shoot for the numbers...
Thanks for the lesson.
Nope, but if you know someone with one I would be game for making some videos
Was this a pre-checkride stage check?
poor guy was nervous
That strange looking cyclic looks like it makes everything 10x times harder...
I thought it was going to be difficult to adjust to, but like most things in R22 it becomes pretty natural. Only thing I struggle with is getting used to the fact the throttle works in reverse of a motorcycle throttle, ie: twist toward you, power decreases and vice versa.
Ryan Powell I've always said the same thing!
He's not passing his check ride
What's with all these Edison commercials
"Carb heat's good."
"uh, carb heat is not good!"
LOL
Well it was after the fact ;)
...really nice vid!
You sounds you hate this student!
the worst thing a teacher can say is "good job"
It’s good he can show his mistakes
He looks rusty?
Good instructor.
The fact that the student forgot to make the radio calls and therefore no radio call was made shows how incompetent this instructor is. If the student forgot to make the call then the instructor should have done it. Its like a student crashing the airplane and the instructor going "Well did you crash the airplane?" You should have stopped the student from crashing!
Radio calls not required in uncontrolled airport anyway....
UFO Powered ParaGliders its good practice
Looks like he just needs more practice and good instruction. Repetition and good instruction equals success, for most people.
For those interested, I was able to record my full helicopter PPL check ride! Check it out below.
th-cam.com/video/kP0R5btDAlc/w-d-xo.html
This student should heading to walmart. He's thinking about a check ride. Oh god.
Poor guy, he was trying lol.

Would this person be safe flying alone?
yes.
Change instructor .
this pilot i find very bosy i would not be happy with this ,remember you was like it when you learnt to fly
John Chapman
sure, somewhat bossy. but extremely patient.
He is just teaching the guy, and he is supposed to do what he is required to do, with precision. He gave me a good impression as a CFI
its a matter of safety?
GoPro2
....This vid made me feel pretty good about myself :P
Ditto!
Same & I only have 4.5 hrs.
Needs a lot more work.
You need much much more practice
gosh still needs to be told with 43 hrs under your belt i was doing this within 3 hrs flying
John Chapman
I Roger that. either he's not that serious or has a problem with focus.
Nice videos Michael
