    Great video.
I share your phylosophy regarding purchasing items with great satisfaction/price ratio and the "$ vs branding", fake or real.
What most people don't realize is that high price branded items are caused by two main factors .
    1)
your purchasing a "waranty" for wich most manufacturer try to find BS excuses to avoid respecting it's own terms. Perceived peace of mind is a very expensive commodity.
    2. Your financing R&D (20%) but mainly Marketing (80%). I know, I been working long enough in Marketing (Pharmaceutical industry).
As a bonus 3) If the company is public, they have to constantly deliver growth on a quarterly basis for their shareholders. Wich mean you'll be told that their lastest product is the ultimate product. That is, until they come up with a new product that are nowadays more and more beta versions because commercialized too soon due to quarterly deadlines imposed by management rather than respecting a sensible development cycle calendar.
    Just look at Garmin.
I'm not saying buy copies, I'm just saying, whenever you buy something, do you homework, establish the level of risks your comfortable with and then gratify yourself with the upgrade of your choice or not.
Because, if you can't afford paying cash or even if you can pay cash, have you ever evaluated the true costs, long term risks and opportunity costs of spending for something that is not essential ?
    Think before you buy.
Finally, remember that most of price of your fancy brand item as nothing to do with production costs.

I understand where you are coming from but you figures are only accurate for your industry. American pharmaceutical companies are notorious for spending more on marketing than they are in R&D.

just on a side note, (i don't think most of anyone here reads Chinese), but the description on 02:10 does say it has a 2 year warranty.

Pharma reinvests more in R&D than nearly any other industry. Reason is that patents expire. Unlike coca cola or gucci.

Copying is very easy, but make the research, design the products and test them cost money. People working in europe cost a lot much more monney than is china. The major chinese products are just copies of american and european research.

Sylvain Michaud, you are spot on with your comments. The one point you made that really disturbs me but is true, companies release products before they are truly tested and we end up getting products that don't work as well as their marketing leads the consumer to believe. Look at Tacx trainer software's over their history of offerings, they always made big claims but most of the time wasn't even a usable product when released. Garmin, Wahoo, and other makers of electronic gadgets have all given me troubles. I game a lot and games releases are the same way. I just bought a new PC monitor and I took a big chance of receiving one without issues based on the reviews of other people but I liked the specs. I would never buy a set of wheels from Zipp because I think the price is way out of line especially if you look at a nice set of high performance racing wheels for something like motocross. Zipp is just fooling a lot of fools.

I've been using a set of Chinese 55mm rims with Novatec hubs for 1.5 years in all sorts of conditions and have done about 15K km on them without any problems. They are stiff, "feel" fast and are surprisingly unproblematic in cross winds. Recently I treated myself to a new bike that came with 62mm Reynolds Strike wheels that cost multiple times the price of my other wheelset...and it's virtually impossible to feel a difference between the two...

Theres great satisfaction in building your own wheels...onya. Please do a review of your wheels at appx. 3,000km...time is the real test.
If you are really 50kg!! you can ride very light wheels.

Always love your videos, mate. I'm like you - I love going into all the details and a video about a simple thing becomes a huge 20minute video. These days I edit things to be a bit shorter, but I personally prefer the long video style! I know you're also a fan of some of the Chinese stuff... if you ever need help sourcing things, send me an e-mail.

I owned Zipps for a year that I used for tri races and every time I hit a bump, I would have a quick heart attack. Finally decided to try a set of Chinese, no name rims, that were less than a fifth of the price. I then sold my Zipps because my race times were just as fast, the rims are well built and I don’t cringe every time I hit a bump in the road. I would not blindly buy any old Chinese rims though, there are crap rims out there. I reviewed several different companies before deciding on one that had a ton of good reviews. I would say the only down side is trying to resell a bike with no name rims, most people here Chinese rims and they turn there noses up and walk away......whatever.

I have the exact same wheelset as yours. Geeeezzz, they’re so terrible in the wind. It’s not about the rims height, but the spoke catches the cross wind so bad. Immediately change it and never looking back.

Really? I just got back from the coastal city of Qingdao, it was SUPER windy. There were people in the group with 40mms struggling with crosswinds, I felt fine with these in the crosswinds. I'm a lighter rider too. Strange to have such different experiences.

I got great fulcrum climbing wheels second hand but I’m looking at doing some carbon aero wheels and everything in your video has me falling in love with these. The patent for the saw tooth profile from Zipp ran out a few months ago AFAIK. That's why you see these rims on aliexpress and they still didn't get copyright stiked
i will build a front wheel for my triathlon bike with the chinese 454 rims for the nasty days where crosswinds might be strong. Have ridden a 88x25mm CSC front wheel in gusty wind conditions. Let's just say, that i grabbed the aero-extensions quite firmly

@@mwinner101 you are correct its because China doesn't have patent laws. they don't need to follow what the rest of the world follows. hence all the fake stuff everywhere and the government not doing anything about it. Aliexpress take things down because they want to please the 'free world' market outside of China.

Great video! A better, and free upgrade for you, lower your seat 5-10mm that will increase your power quite a bit. You're rocking on your saddle and overextending your legs, shoot for a fully extended knee angle of 155*-160* or 20*-25* from straight. Looking at the video you're closer to 170, which is cause for concern. Good luck man, keep up the good work!

You've got a very good eye. The same day I switched the wheels I also switched the saddle (also for a review) it sits a lot higher on the rails than my Arione. I've since dropped it about 5mm, but maybe it needs more. I have a bike fitter in Beijing who wants me to visit him, so that will get this all dialed in. Again, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, I'm impressed with your eye for details!

Wheel building is easy. I built many wheelsets, mostly for mountainbiking, but the last couple years I've built some road wheels also. My last set of wheels, because they were carbon, I had a professional company who specializes in wheel building build them, I won't name them, but I got my wheels and they weren't perfectly true. I had to do some final tweeks myself. I do have the wheel building tools and a tension meter. Tools are worth the investment if you like doing your own maintenance on your bike. It's sad that people will tell you if you've never built a set of wheels you should not attempt it and have a builder or bike shop do it. I'm glad I don't listen to idiots. I highly recommend for anyone to try it. It's time consuming but fun.

Anyway to be fair it doesn't matter how big or little you are. Strong enough crosswinds with deepish rims can be a mare. I remember having my carbon bike blown from under me by a crosswind like a kite. I weighed around 96kg at the time. My rims were only 40mm deep so not huge. I exited a stretch of houses that was sheltering me somewhat and it was like being low tackled. Hit me like a scrum half.

"People says about stiffness of wheels" well, I don't know if a pair is stiffer than the other, but when they aren't stuff enough you'll recognize it very well, mine clearly flex too much in standing sprints

Making things that LOOK and PERFORM like a particular product is not illegal (for the most part as long as they are not identical) or immoral... using the stickers to brand them the same IS both ILLEGAL and IMMORAL.

Actually I think both the dimples as well as the saw tooth profile are patented. Not sure whether that patent covers China, but at least selling to US would also infringe some IP rights, even without those stickers.

Thnx for all the tips! I ‘m more and more into building and maintaining my own bikes and thus buying the parts instead of the complete package is the way to go. And I don’t care for brands much, more for genuine innovation, which costs money... as such I steer away from that too until proven to work.
The price difference is of course steep, but for that you get an assembled and tested product, which is something to pay for. As such I still won’t buy Chinese goods without some proper reviews that seem real, which is where your video’s help! But after that, building assembling stuff yourself makes a bike more your own achievement!

Nice build. I've also been riding the same Saw tooth clinchers for about a year. I'm running Powerway R13 hubs on them. I'm a 78kg rider so impact on braking is much larger. The rims squealed like stuck pigs when braking. So toeing the shoes and centering on the brake track was super important. Also changed from the Shimano Dura-ace shoes to Lifeline shoes worked better, these are a slightly softer compound. But between each race I need to clean the brake track and sand down the shoes to remove any glazed areas from high temp. build up. All in all I'm quite happy too. Although I can't help but think what the Original hubs and brake track efficiency would be like in comparison.

    • @ChinaCycling
      @ChinaCycling  6 ปีที่แล้ว

What do you use to clean the brake track? I've not noticed any build up yet, but it's the middle of winter, so maybe temps are lower.

    • @patrickklostermann
      @patrickklostermann 6 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ChinaCycling I might be a little pedantic with this but it has helped in my case. I just use dish wash liquid and a cloth or scourer to try remove the compound build up. Depending on how much I've been able to remove I then use a toothpick for the grooves. It's seriously tedious work but somewhat therapeutic the night or nights before a race. I've been toying with the idea of using a hairdryer to try soften the residue before rubbing it off. However I've not yet tried this method. Perhaps on my next cleaning mission. I'm in Jo'burg South Africa, with quite a warm climate so my brake wear might be amplified compared to yours.

I would rather have a different set of rims, in independent testing done by hambini and a few other people they found the 454’s were got garbage being beat by even the 303’s. Your yoeleos were like 5watts faster at 30kph so I wouldn’t bother changing to these
