Josh Strife’s Worst Roguelike Deckbuilder Ever Series. Full video essay on all the worst ones. Make a career out of it and hope you don’t come out like James Rolfe at the end 😂
games like these need to hit a very specific mark in order to get overwhelmingly positive there are lots of things that make people end up leaving a negative review, and for deck builders its very easy to reach that area, and only six games being able to maintain overwhelmingly positive after months and even years is obvious proof that if you DO hit that area, you arent leaving it
A genre that has a crazy number of overwhelming positive is visual novels. People who like visual novels play visual novels. That is why it's like that.
Sucks that Wildfrost got review bombed on day 1 cause people had no idea how to play it otherwise it would be overwhelmingly positive too. That is one of the best deckbuilders ever made hands down.
Major props for putting the name of each game on screen as youre talking about them. So many much larger youtubers dont understand this and it drives me mad
I'm gonna be honest. I primarily watch your videos because of your personality, the types of games you like, and how good you are at them. In that order. The first one makes the last one be a positive. I watch some retromation if it gets too much 😅
The STS board game is like, really good. I was skeptical of it because it was so close to the video game I was thinking "well what's even the point" but the cooperative element is like, actually really fun and gives it a unique and worthwhile element to it, it's smartly designed to be not too hard to track manually, and like. If you're familiar with the digital game already it's *so easy to learn.* Took about 6 hours going through all three acts with some people yesterday. One of them hadn't played the board game but has played the video game and there was *basically no teaching required* it was awesome. We got to the heart and died there.
My one gripe with the Roguelike Deckbuilder label is it obfuscates the fact Slay the Spire doesn't just sit at the top; it's also easily one of the GOATs for the entire Roguelike genre
When you revisit monster train I highly recommend picking up the DLC as well!! It adds a new clan, a bunch of new alternate champions, new bosses and so much more!! I can’t wait to follow this series of videos!
Unless you are a completionist they did not add so luch more in that DLC. These games have 2 dimension for player progression, the game content for a normal run, that's what casuals like, and then there is the ''end game+'' if I could say, which is more for completionnist players and people who really want to beat the game entirely and pretty much becoming a master at the game.
Unfortunately, the devs basically immediately dropped support for the game as soon as the DLC dropped, so there's a good third of the cards that are just way too underpowered for the new mechanics. Monster Train also made me realize how deranged my completionist mentality was when I realized just how much of an insane task was to even just simply get a completion mark with every card. Not saying the game's bad, but yeah
I really liked this type of video (as opposed to the regular let's plays - which I also like, to be clear). Wouldn't mind seeing more "editorial content" like this!
I'm surprised that I've never even heard of Shogun Showdown. For Cobalt Core, I've watched an entire series of let's plays by Rhapsody (also good friends with Olexa) and I was hooked the whole way through. Rhapsody is also how I discovered Slay the Spire - I'm sure I've watched over 200 hours of Rhapsody playing that game. It just has so much to offer!
I get why Inscryption isn't included, with it only being kinda a rougelite for the main campaign, but Kaycee's Mod is undeniably a rougelite and I think would be worth revisiting (it is Overwhelmingly Positive, obviously)
Honestly I didn’t know what roguelike meant until I found your channel lol I’m glad I know now tho because they’re so fun and addicting, I was missing out for sure
Quite disapointed to learn that Astrea Six Sided Oracles is not among the highest rated games because it honeslty is one of the best! Six different characters that play very diffrenetly, very cool mechanics of corruption and purification that switches the way you think about health, a good diifficulty system and a great enemy variety on top of great graphics and nice music! If you like deckbuilding roguleikes and especially with dice go check it out you wont regret it! On another note great content as usual you're definitely one of my favorite roguelike content creators, cheers from France!
Everyone of these games is in my library and I spend a ton of time playing them… Mostly I like RPG isometric games, but this little genre has really burrowed a hole in my heart. I’m also glad that many of them can be played on the Steam Deck. It is the perfect genre for the Steam Deck.
Love the idea of you playing these as well! Probably will be buying Shogun Showdown soon. Along with unrelated to this video Dice and Fold and Wildfrost
I'm so looking forward to Cobalt Core modded. I haven't been able to get back to the modding scene cuz of uni, and I'm dying to see how much fun the new mods are.
Clicked for Slay the Spire, but I am really happy for shogun showdown and cobalt core getting the love they deserve. Cobalt Core really sucked me in with the unique mechanics and amazing character writing and music, and Shogun Showdown has been an on and off obsession for me for a couple months now
apart from path of exile and factorio, monster train is my most played steam game. (slay the spire is right after that) It was truly a masterpiece of a game that I also haven't opened in over 2 years. I am looking forward to all of these videos but the monster train one the most
I am pretty sure your Balatro video was the first of your episodes I watched. It is one of my favorite games now (I think the equalize sound effect when playing the plasma deck is one of the best sound effects in video gaming) . Thanks for this video, I have some more games to check out.
Glaring omission of The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, which has put all gameplay features on cards and so is surely the most deckbuilding roguelike of them all :^)
First of all, thanks for the videos; I'm looking forward to this week. Second, that's quite a Steam collection you have there. Third, I've played the StS board game, and it's a lot of fun, but it takes a long time. I've played it twice, both times lasted 3 hours, and we only finished the first act. Maybe, one of these days, we'll get four people to give up *nine* hours so we can finally beat this game, but that seems unlikely. Is it worth trying at least once? Probably, yeah. But there's so much setup. The setup alone is longer than most deckbuilding roguelike runs. So, I have mixed feelings. YMMV!
Luck Be a Landlord isn’t a traditional deckbuilder by any means. But it's one of my most played games ever. Particularly since it got a mobile release. I credit it for helping me quit the majority of social medias, which made me a happier person.
Total banger game, for sure. Just not labeled as a roguelike deckbuilder on steam. If we included adjacent kinda strategy roguelikes then this list is much longer haha
I did click on this video pretty much exclusively because Olanky posted something. Not because of the deckbuilders. I do think there's a LOT to be gained from re-visiting some older games. Games like Terracards etc. have updated a lot since you last played them.
My personal hot take is, that Monster Train is actually the better roguelike deckbuilder than Slay the Spire is. But that's just preference, I like both and I loved my time with Monster Train. But I own all of the games mentioned and all of them are special in their own way. It just showcases amazingly how varied this genre can be, and those are just some of the top games, there's so many more that are good
Not that hot of a take, but maybe a slightly less popular one. I too played a lot more Monster Train than StS. It's one of my most played games. Not that I don't love StS, but enjoy MT more for sure.
@@Nova04550 I loved the customization aspect of MT so much. Not only that you could custom build your hero, you had two heroes to choose from for each faction, five factions and chose two of them for a given run. It felt so much more like I was in control of what I wanted, in StS it's "just" which class you pick and then the usual deckbuilding aspect.
@@VividWorlds Yeah MT gives a lot more control in general and not much that will harm you just because you got unlucky. And yeah tons of variation/replayability.
Shotout to the Hearthstone single player pve modes! from Kobolds and Catacombs onwards, they had dungeon runs which is by itself, one of the first deck building roguelike game mode that pushed the genre forward around the same time as slay the spire, which boosted its popularity by a metric ton!
Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles was overwhelmingly positive when it came out, then a bunch of people who expected a "Slay the Spire with dice" wrote negative reviews for it because it requires more thinking than they are willing to do. If I can beat it on higher difficulties with severe ADHD and brain fog, anyone can. I'm so sad it didn't make it, it's a brilliant game and every turn feels like chess with how many moving parts can be. Puzzling out the correct decisions is immensely satisfying.
Fwiw I have issues with astrea for other reasons. It was not very good at explaining things and hit you with information overload as it’s way of introducing difficulty. Still a good game but there’s a reason it’s not overwhelmingly positive, and it’s not review bombing from sts fans lol
Inscryption isn’t… really a roguelike deckbuilder which is why I didn’t include it. Kaycee’s mod is a roguelike deckbuilder but I consider Kaycee’s mod a bit of, exactly that, a mod. (Plus I don’t think it’s very good haha)
@@OlexaYT wow really didn’t think about that that way. Makes a lot of sense now that you put it in that perspective. Funny enough that was the game that got me more into rougelikes. And of course hades, anyways been binging your content for a few days now and you’re really cool. Learned about a lot of new rougelikes thanks to you. Really cool that you replied have a great rest of your day my man 🤘.
One correction: Slay the Spire was not the first to have Ascensions - not by a long shot. I'm sure there are several roguelike games from days past that had them (probably MUDs), but one I know of for sure is Kingdom of Loathing. They even call them Ascensions. Although they aren't increasing numerical levels, they are unique challenges that introduce restrictions or goals on top of the regular game making it much more difficult, and they are only unlocked as a result of completing a previous run.
Technically speaking Samurai Showdown isn't a deckbuilder but a hand management game. It has more in common with Rogue Lords than with StS. Still a great game which I found through this video.
I think the best designed deckbuilder is Across the Obelisk. However, it has some negative reviews because of the DLCs and launcher (still very positive).
All of these games to be honest, for the most part, have so much endless replayability and depth, that they need a huge amount of hours to invest into and get good, that you can't ever do them justice without a heck ton of experience on them. Slay the spire is the king of course. Thousands of hours and you can still get better in it. Madness. They are not like the other games, or even the other roguelikes, where you play 5 or 10 or even 30 runs and then you move unto the next game. They are just not like this. PS: Monster train is actually quite fun, but I will say that you can break the game very easily, more easily than the other games at least, and this makes for a lesser challenge, compared to the slay the spire favorite. We always return to StS mostly because of the very nice challenge that keeps you on your toes, even after hundred and thousands of hours.
Astrea is one of my personal favorites in the genre and the only other deckbuilder to give me the same enjoyment as playing sts the first time. A little after its release it was actually overwhelming positive for a time, but it understandably dipped as the game asks quite a bit of the player starting out with its UI and somewhat flawed mechanics where many builds simply don't work without key components. It was also disheartening seeing the amount of streamers just tear the game a new one from the UI alone and promptly deeming it a dud, but again wasn't too surprised I guess.
I've recently found that you'd played Monster Train. It's laughing through tears, sorry 😅 I'm really curious to see your process 🙃 Dragons and The Last Divinity wait for you.
I'm a type of person you didn't mention in your intro: I have NOT enjoyed deck builders (especially not Slay the Spire). But I am trying Ringo. I am trying *real* hard to enjoy them. So I am watching your video to try to figure out what I am missing that makes these enjoyable. You gave me some insights I didn't have before.
I'd love to hear your take on the Slay the Spire board game, even if it's just in passing during a video Also, I agree with the rest. I watch you because you're fun to watch!
i can't wait for die in the dungeon - i played the very first demo, but have been intentionally passing on this one to wait for at least EA if not 1.0 release. I can attest the other 4 are bangers.
I've never liked poker so I held off from Balatro for awhile, but a good friend who I got into Slay the Spire was obsessed with it so I gave it a chance. If you love deckbuilding roguelites but have stayed way from Balatro because you don't like poker I'd just like to tell you GET THE DAMN GAME ALREADY!!!

Thanks for the list Olexa. straight onto Steam to get Die in the Dungeon and added CC to my wishlist
I clicked the video because I like you
These games show you that you don't have to have the realistic graphics to be a good game, and to be loved by gamers.
SHOGUN SHOWDOWN MENTIONED!!! I got like 78 hours on that
Will you do this with other genres
🤔
I've recently found that you'd played Monster Train. It's laughing through tears, sorry 😅 I'm really curious to see your process 🙃 Dragons and The Last Divinity wait for you.
It's so sad that diceomancer didn't make it here. But I guess it makes sense, as its only a demo
I'm here for all three things you said
have you heard of griftlands? I think it’s an amazing card game roguelite
Subbed! Not gonna miss these videos!
Cobalt core on the list... NICE❤
I’d choose Dream Quest over Slay the Spire any given day.
That is an insane take I’m ngl lol
Balatro with Tyler is the only Balatro I desire
Monster Train is my favorite game here. Altho I havent played Cobalt Core yet. Have it on my wishlist tho
Cobalt core rocks
Cobalt core is fantastic. Imo, lacks a little on the replayability side, but for the first like 20 hours it's amazing
I'd love to hear your take on the Slay the Spire board game, even if it's just in passing during a video
Also, I agree with the rest. I watch you because you're fun to watch!
I'm also here because i like your content ❤
Can't wait for Slay the Spire 2
i can't wait for die in the dungeon - i played the very first demo, but have been intentionally passing on this one to wait for at least EA if not 1.0 release. I can attest the other 4 are bangers.
Pirates outlaws should be here!
Great game genuinely! Not overwhelming positive tho
