To each their own! I’m not into makeup and hair and nails like that…but I love clothes…and I’m a plus sized person. Some feel the need to tell me that I’m overdressed. We are all individuals so my casual maybe your overdressed and that’s ok. The problem comes when I push my preference on you or you try to push your preference on me. I’ll be dressy dressy on formal or gala nights simply because I like to and because I don’t have other occasions to do so. Live in YOUR comfort zone!

I recently packed my black tux and my white tux dinner jacket for an 11 day cruise.
My Wife made fun of me saying :
What do you think it is 1960
    &
Who do you think you are James Bond?
Well I wore my white dinner jacket tux one evening and walked thru the public spaces, I could feel eyes following me, I got compliments from Men, Woman and the crew. I was told I was classy , I was yold looking good, I was told I looked like a sharp dressed man. I felt good about myself!
No more negative coments from my Wife and yes we had the ships photographer take professional pictures.
I think it is cool to dress sharply even if the rest of the crowd doesnt.
3 days later I wore my black tux white tie with same results.
    I say go for it.

Social media has ruined our society. People have such bravery to say something online that I really don’t think they would say to that person’s face.
To the couple going on Princess: we did Alaska cruise tour last Sept. my husband does not own a suit or tie. I just asked him what he wore and if he felt underdressed. I can tell you neither of us even remember what we wore. Meaning if we were under dressed we didn’t feel it at that time well enough to remember! Enjoy!!

My husband and I sailed on RCL and Celebrity this past fall. Before going we went to Men's Wearhouse to get a new suit (he needed it for other situations also). When it came time to measure for the pant length the sales associate showed us a chart of pant lengths. There was the traditional length which shows a break at the shoe, and a shorter, more modern length that younger men were currently wearing, and one length in between. So, choose what you are comfortable with. We do dress up for formal/chic/dressy night - it's part of the fun and part of the tradition of cruising that made it different from what we wear and do everyday.

We went full out on formal nights which gave me a change to wear my mother-of-the-bride gowns again, and my husband wore a black suit that looks like a tux, one night with a bow tie, and the next with a regular one. For the for the couple about to cruise on Princess, don’t stress over what you wear. We just sailed on Princess 11/05/23 and we are “those” people who dress for dinner. However, when we arrived at the port, we realized that my husband had forgotten the garment bag with our dressy clothes. We had plenty of casual clothes in our suitcases, but nothing really dressy. So… we had to fake it. I had two plain black tank dresses in my suitcase- I simply dressed them up each night with scarves and accessories I had with me. I had to wear black flats every night, but my feet thanked me for that. Hubby had one pair of dress slacks, one pair of nice jeans, one button down shirt and one polo. He managed to make it work. Dressy nights were simply the button down shirt and black slacks. No jacket or tie, but luckily he had his dress shoes in his suitcase. All of my daughter’s dressy clothes were in the AWOL garment bag. She pulled together a look with the nice black jeans she wore when we boarded the ship, a couple of nice tops, and the only shoes she had that weren’t beach shoes- her black cowboy boots, also what she wore for embarkation. No one died, we weren’t kicked out of the dining room, and even our pictures look pretty good. Princess is fairly lenient on their dress code.

@@jlawrence0181 I completely agree. My point was simply that while we weren’t dressed as well as we normally would have, we did the best we could with more casual clothes and still managed to look presentable, so there’s no need to get terribly stressed out about what to wear. The best rule of thumb is just dress nicely. No one on Princess is going to have a fit and kick you out if you’re not in an evening gown and tux (Cunard, yes. Princess, no). BTW, we are part of that 50% plus group of Texans, hence my daughter boarding a cruise ship in neatly pressed jeans and cowboy boots 😊

Our first cruise was Celebrity and we didn’t find the formal night too formal. It was smart but as I dint own that type of clothing I just wore a longer length plain sun dress with a large shawl type scarf and sparkly flat sandals. It was absolutely fine. Princess was almost non existent in their formal night clothing. We’ve been in a UK line that was more formal on 2 nights but again got away with not wearing really really formal, just smart and a bit dressy. The last line was a luxury line and again most wore smart or dressy but not many wore ballgowns and tuxedos.

Formal nights are part of the cruise experience to me so I love dressing the part to feel good and maybe turn some heads depending on how adventurous I get 😂. The hardest part for me when it comes to it though is packing enough and making sure it doesn’t get too wrinkled as well as trying to make sure what I wear is comfortable/breathable enough for the weather since I tend to overheat easily (the downside of more traditionally formal mens clothes).

I just went on my first Princess cruise, which cruised to Mexico. I didn't eat in the MDR but on "dressy" "gala" whatever they called it night, I saw very few people in formal or really dressy attire heading to the dining rooms. However I did see a few couples who wore formal attire (gowns and tuxes) and they didn't seem to mind at all that not everyone waa dressed like them. I ate at a specialty restaurant and, again, people weren't dressed especially fancy.

I enjoy your channel very much because your commentary is always very balanced and reasonable. The cruise industry has changed dramatically since I first cruised in January 1970. (I am 81 and still cruising mostly on HAL).
During my life I have taken many different types of vacations which included tent camping. I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and activities in the various campgrounds. When the conversation about dress codes arises I like to put this comparison out for consideration:
If I walked around the campground in an evening gown and my husband in his tuxedo or dinner jacket we would certainly be free to do so. However, we would really stick out like a sore thumb. The other campers would think we were strange.
If being dressed like that I went to the campground manager and asked where and when the ballroom dancing would be or where the fine dining restaurant was or at what time was the chamber music concert would begin, I probably could expect his answer to be something like "Lady, this is a campground not a blooming cruise ship".
Likewise, I don't expect to dress and behave as if I were at a campground when I am on a cruise ship. If that were what I wanted, I would have gone to a campground. I believe that there is a time and place for everything.
This is just my humble opinion and I do adhere to its principles.
Please keep up the good work.

I was always proud of how nice he looked, going off to work.
And that’s work, it’s not even a formal night on a cruise ship. It’s one of the reasons we like HAL, because they are a bit more traditional in their approach. There are many other casual cruises out there.

Consider going on a $25k 3 day cruise that practices exclusivity… where everyone’s taste is up to your standard vs suggesting that people not partake in an included dinner that they paid for on their cruise. Clearly there is a reason the cruise line does not strictly enforce it… because it is a rediculous notion to prohibit someone from entering a formal dinner that requires formal wear… formal wear can be subjective. It’s ridiculous to be overly critical of peoples attire on a non luxury cruise. Subbing out a pair of shoes or an article of clothing for comfort while still bein respectably dressed is nothing to be engrossed over for the sake of “ambiance." My Mother wore a full length sparkly gown, my Dad wore a very nice suit and a cummerbund made of his Scots plaid, and a bow tie covered in pheasant feathers. They looked amazing, and for mid-western ranchers they had a ball!

"Formal night" seems to have disappeared long before covid. We have 50 cruises to our credit and I honestly don't remember the last time I packed a formal. I do remember trying to talk my daughter out of brining her prom dress on one cruise--she and one other teen were the only really formally dressed people we saw. Many cruises use terms like "Dress up night" or "Gala Night". I've even seen suggestions of "wear the most dressy thing you brought." And honestly, I don't care what other people think! It's nice to dress up a bit on gala nights or whatever the cruise line calls it. I always have a few dressy outfits --- usually a blazer with slacks and a nice collared shirt and leather shoes and some evening jewelry/watch. I have a white linen suit that I sometimes wear on warm weather cruises, as well as a Chinese men's formal top. I do attend formal events occasionally where I live and I enjoy that, but no black tie for me on a cruise. (Maybe if I cruised on Cunard, or went on a wedding cruise, or some special circumstance, I might decide to pack all the formal black tie stuff, but not normally.) And yet I always enjoy folks who do dress up in formal wear or who wear dressy casual ensembles.

You all looked great in your dressy wear! I think people that don’t think this is ‘dressy enough’ have not cruised in quite a while. I’ve noticed that cruise lines are often not even calling it formal night anymore. On my most recent Princes cruise I believe they called it ‘dress to impress’ night. I just wore a dressy top and capris and my husband wore dress pants and a collared shirt. We rarely pack formal clothes anymore.

Recently we attended a formal night on the Caribbean Princess. About 10 teenage boys and 2 girls walked in and sat at their table. 2 of the boys took their shirt off and sat bare chested at the dining table. We were horrified and thought they should have been removed immediately. The staff did speak to them and they put their shirts back on but as soon as they left they removed them again. They were not removed from the dining room and i felt they should have been. They showed no respect for anyone else. I feel Princess have let their standards slip.

My husband and I love the dressy/formal nights. It makes for a whole different atmosphere when everyone is dressed like this. People tend to act like they're dressed. I can understand those that don't want to participate and that's fine but I think if they're not going to follow the dress code and guidelines, they should dine elsewhere for that night.

In the past, the culinary experience at the gala dinner was extraordinary. Today it's not worth carrying so many clothes, makeup and shoes for just one day because dinner is no longer the same. I use the main restaurant the rest of the night and on the day of the gala I go to the buffet or ordered room service . That way I charge with less luggage, after all I'm on vacation. I don't want anyone to tell me what to do or how to dress.

For the person who wondered what to bring for a Princess "formal night": We sail on Princess a lot, and find "office casual" to be perfectly acceptable on "formal nights". A button down shirt and black or tan jeans are acceptable for men; you don't need a tie. I wouldn't wear shorts or blue jeans.
As a man I know better than to make women's clothing recommendations.

@hariseldon6550 I use packing cubes. I bring wrinkle release spray and hang things in the bathroom and run the hot shower for steam. Works on most everything. This woman and her family has gone on way too many cruises for y'all on watchers to criticize what she should and should not wear. She knows exactly how to dress for any event. This is not her 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th rodeo😒. She has done nothing but been helpful and very informative to help others that are going on cruises. For people to be so negative and judgemental is so 😈 Y'all look very nice! Each one of y'all looks just fine and I like how y'all colors flow together! There is absolutely nothing wrong with anything either of you are wearing. That's terrible how people will have a "personal" opinion and preference and then think anyone not within the same opinion and preference is wrong. Be careful not to judge others because while you are busy judging them someone is also judging you.

Amazing how some people suddenly become fashion gurus. Social media is a curse these days frequented by wannabe fashion critics amongst other things. I consider myself quite up to date when it comes to fashion and could see absolutely nothing wrong in what you and your men wore. I am now 74 yrs and feel I have the experience in life to make such a statement. To be honest I have always wondered why a piece of cloth tied around a neck was so important. Ridiculous when you think about it! There rant over, keep the videos coming and as you rightly do, ignore these unqualified critics who seem to have such small lives with nothing better to do. If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t bother saying anything social media wise 👍

I’m retired and we cruise quite often. I spent a large portion of my life in uniform and after retirement worked at a jobs that required a certain level of dress. Since then I don’t own a suit. When I dress for formal night I meet the minimum suggested dress. I believe there are many reasons people are now dressing down. If you fly to a cruise luggage becomes expensive. If I can travel with only a carry-on I will. This means no jacket or dress clothes. Cruise lines have lessened the requirements and on some ships the dining room menu doesn’t reflect a formal dinner. Keep calm and cruise on.

I’ve been on several cruises… and while I think your family dressed nicely… I think that I’d consider all the outfits “basic dress dinner wear.” Gala outfits would indeed be fancier. Ties or a ticked on scarf, for men… and long dresses or flowy evening slacks and more blingy jewelry, for women.

Having been on a Cunard cruise pre Covid and having had to acquire and wear a black “tuxedo” suit and a somewhat less dressy sports coat and dress pants with dress shirts and ties to all meals let alone the “Formal” nights - I can say that I understand people feeling annoyed to have “followed the rules” when others appear to have made “little effort”. I can also say that the experience did make the cruise feel more special than the dress shirt and casual pants I wear to most restaurants feels. On the other hand if cruise lines are willing to accept any dress/casual look, tie no tie, open collar, rolled sleeves, jacket no jacket, sandals no socks etc. then the cruise lines should stop calling these evenings formal, dress, gala or anything similar and stop suggesting a dress code that they won’t enforce. I fell the problem is not really what anyone is wearing as much as it is the confused expectation of cruise passengers who look to the cruise line for guidance and enforcement. I could have saved hundreds of dollars on that Queen Elizabeth cruise had I been able to avoid buying two new suits and accessories, but I also would not have had the memories of siting at dinner with my friends and all of us feeling like we were partaking of a very special occasion to sit and dine on that fine ship. You and your family look fine and like you were having a great time. I hope you remember it as fun.

I am so happy that you brought up this subject. You are so right about different cultures, styles, and generations. We really don't have as many "formal" affairs as we used to, so it's so much fun to dress UP for a couple of nights and join the team. Look at how much money is spent on Halloween costumes! Borrow, rent, or buy a gown for the week. Do your hair and makeup a little differently. Have your date do the same. You'll be surprised how much fun it is. For our last cruise, one of our friends was recovering from a serious cancer surgery. He and his wife simply did not feel like dressing up, and I couldn't blame them. They were happy to be alive and on a cruise. He wore dress pants and a collared shirt but no tie or jacket. She wore a very nice sun dress, so the rest of us did the same, but I did miss dressing up. No one had a problem with it. So to each his own. The point is that it is fun to participate, but we can't judge others.
