My mum died in that accident. She was only 34 years old...and my stepfather was with her. I hope that some day I muster up enough courage to visit the mass grave where they are buried in Katmandu, and say good bye to them. All my respect to the people who passed away due to this accident and my warmest regards to their relatives.

My father who was senior captain in Royal Nepal was returning from Dubai just behind this ill fated PIA aircraft.
He was hearing the captain of PIA talk to ATC and suddenly it went silent.
Both planes were approaching runway in their landing path few nautical miles seperated and the PIA airplane was ahead of my dad's plane.
He retired after flying in RA for 37 years.

In case anybody wonders what was the reason.
The paper chart they used for manual approach had it's print a little worn out and additionally it was placed in the cockpit in such a way that the pilot did not have a clear view of it and they completely skipped first step of the descent. So basically they went lower than they actually should and hit the mountain.
The procedures for this particular airport were changed so it is now strictly specified where the paper chart should be placed so that it cannot be misread.
How do they know where the chart was placed, or if the print was worn out, if the plane was completely destroyed by fire?

@@cubby6988 they recreated the flight. They now that the chart was worn out because they had the date it was printed. Then when recreating the flight they noticed that pilots usually placed the chart on their left where it was easily accessed by the pilot but couldn't be clearly seen by the first officer not my the pilot himself because it was partially covered in certain conditions. After that they regulated where the chart should be placed and who should be responsible for it's condition. I think that nowadays, the airport in Kathmandu doesn't use paper charts but they rely on computers (though this last one I'm not quite sure cause it's a very remote and old airport)

Make sure u buy insurance
They already fired and suspended most of the pilots with dubious licenses so you don't need to worry about that too much. Plus International travel is safer than domestic travel due to strict international standards so yeah, depending on your route, your safety will somewhat vary. I've traveled on PIA about 6 times without any complications so I'm confident in the airlines (I stay away from using PIA domestically as most of it's crashes are of domestic flights). Nevertheless, safe journeys.

@@amongus1219 It is deadly, but Pilots are given special training to land here. There's no ILS either due to the mountains and when Pilots report false levels (by not being able to understand the chart clearly) to the ATC who's guiding them, there's no way one would assume that the flight is not doomed. I was 2 years old when this happened but I still remember it fresh like it was just yesterday.

Yeah, I remembered this air crash, it took place on 28 September 1992. All on board 167 passengers including service team killed... that was an end of a journey started from Karachi's Jinnah International to Kathmandu.
I went to to Kathmandu , Nepal first time in 1994 for the first time. They made a memorial for that crash in a park.

When plane got closer to Kathmandu, seeing lush green mountains, small white lines of stream and greenery then finally landing at the airport was a beautiful sight for a person who would come from hot climate. Those were the days, good old days. Feel sorry for the incident that happened that wiped the whole royal family, for they were such beautiful people. I think Nepal was not the same after that. Anyways my father returned back in late 90s so never visited beautiful Nepal ever since.
Being nepali, and as child back then, i remember this incident n thai airways crash within couple of months apart. It was really sad moment.

I was 10 years old I guess and remembered this incident as it casted a gloom all over the country . I remember names of all passengers and even pictures of deceased crew members was published in the newspaper
It's a little consolation that the passengers probably never knew what was about to happen. In most air crashes, the plane "goes down" and it's minutes of fear and horror as the plane falls from the sky. These folks at least didn't have to go through that. God bless the souls of all on board.

There was a error of 1000 feet difference in the map which was supplied by the authority in which that mountain hight was shown 1000 feet less than the actual hight which resulted accident.

Pilots are ac poorly trained. seems as if not trained at all sometimes. consider the lahore to karachi accident a few months ago. so many things were uncovered abt PIA it was ac disturbing.
Not true. This aircraft had altimeter error. It was report 1000 ft higher than what it actually was, so when pilot thought they were flying at 9000 ft actually they were flying at 8000 ft. As it cascades down in each points, it is actually 1000 ft lower than prescribed altitude. This plane crashed about 150 ft below the mountain. I have been to the crash site and saw some fragments of debri still there. I asked the locals there and they say it was flying pretty low and had almost hit another mountain before that. The cattles were frightened in nearby village as the plane made huge sound as it flew low. How I wish the pilots kept safety margin and flew few hundred feet above prescribed one. After this mountain, there are not any significant mountains and the plane lines up for the runway. It was a tragedy of 150 ft vertical height.

Watched the entire episode, pilots got ahead one step in the approach chart. Captain’s thumb was literally covering the first suggested approach altitude. Co-pilot didn’t catch it and reported their altitude incorrectly so tower didn’t correct them. Flight was 1000 feet below recommend level. Investigators suggestions, get clips to post the approach chart on the control panel and install radar at the airport 🤦🏽♂️
The most one can hope for in these situations is that the suffering and awareness of what was happening was minimal.

I can't decide which is scarier, flying over the ocean or flying over mountains?
well there aren't any easy to land places near mountains incase of an engine failure while the ocean goes for miles without an airport. During take off and landing, yes mountains are a bit more dangerous but there are specially qualified pilots and most aircraft can glide for very long periods of time so chances of an accident are minimal

With the ocean or smth some captains and first officer for example cactus 1549 they landed in the Hudson (I know it’s different) it’s more safer than the mountains

Fun facts : Few months ago a crash happened in Pakistan and investigation found that 30% of the Pilot have got license through fraudulent means. Since then PIA has been banned by many countries.
