This might b a dumb question but how much of advantage does a ripping chain have over a normal chain for crosscutting like the majority of people use on a regular basis. I know the ripping chains made for that purpose but I was just wondering how much of an advantage it had over the other style chain. Also will a "normal" chain dull faster than a ripping style chain doing rip cuts like that? Thanks and stay safe

No it’s a good question. Ripping chain has I think a 10 degree angle and a bit of a different shape than standard cross cut chain. Normal chain is 30 degrees and usually has more teeth than a ripping chain. For the method I use here I don’t think that ripping chain gives much advantage to cut speed, but it doesn’t need to be sharpened as frequently. Ripping chain is better at clearing the cut of material and works much better than standard chain when the bar is perpendicular to the log.

I have used both and have found that the ripping chain is better for a smooth cut. I sharpen to 0 degrees, have 36” bar. I think that the bar follows the cut better and thus is faster and uses less gas. There is a technique on how to cut most efficiently. Watch some of the vids by Philippinoes and Malaysians milling logs in their shorts and flops. They sharpen to 0deg and break their rakers off.

@@D-B-Cooper interesting. I still like to do bucking cuts, and don’t really need a dedicated ripping saw, but maybe there’s a slightly faster chain out there for sure.

Check out a few of my other ripping videos, the techniques I use are fairly simple if you can roll the log you can use a shorter bar and it goes much faster than trying to one shot all the way through.

like a grand to 2 grand for a chain saw is cheap....

For a new one, yes. For a used one, that’s more than enough.

But what the price of your lungs? You inhale plenty of concentraded toxic and carcinogenic emissions. Is it worth? I dont think so.
