    I guess there’s room for improvement:
    - slimmer flat batteries from smartphones
    - uncased SSD instead of HDD to save space and power
    - slimmer heatsink and fan from a gaming laptop
    - moving hdmi -> lvds circuitry to a custom PCB

    A clip of an exploding 18650 would've gone a long way near the end when you're talking about how extreme caution is needed if you're going to weld/solder batteries together. 😂

    • @Andres_tvs
      @Andres_tvs หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah you have to have a good soldering iron with a lot of thermal mass, or a lot of watts, I've soldered 18650s and the trick is to get as much heat as fast as you can, max temp on the soldering iron and solder the wires as quick as you can ensuring the solder melts and make a proper connection, the battery has a lot of thermal mass so having 400 Celsius for 3 seconds don't heat them up as much.
      I use recycled 18650s so nickel strips aren't a option, also for a 18650 to blow up you have to try really hard, pretty much having the battery with a full charge and straight up cooking the cell 😂😂😂

    I can appreciate the work he put into this project. The modular aspect is great. I just feel he handled the battery situation poorly. Welding batteries is well above your average modder’s ability. New batteries with a usb c style charger would greatly improve it but not by much. All this work for 1-1/2 to 2 hours of gameplay seems pointless.

    For that loose cover around the screen, I'd say just squirt some super glue in there or use a soldering iron to melt the pieces together. One thing that would make it even cooler is if the controller could dock inside with the lid closed. Then you really could have a complete self-contained unit, albeit with only an hour of play time.

    1. Charging time was likely due to safety -- to avoid any possibility of thermal runaway.
    2. The battery housing is BAD -- the battery heat goes RIGHT into the console and vice versa.
    3. Repurposing an xbox 360 power supply is an odd choice -- when a usb c PD3 charger can EASILY supply 150w+
    4. The battery should be a clip on/slide on box on the bottom -- with an optional DC input, as well as possibility for a few common battery standards (eg: tools, laptops, etc)
    5. An SSD should have been sued. Obv might require a mod chip, but common ways emulate a HDD for an SSD is much desired to hide the use of an SSD from the OS (but maybe there's anti cheat for this?)
    6. The motherboard can be FOLDED to make an even smaller package, as well as concentrating heat to a central heat pipe.

    • @GamingDamned
      @GamingDamned หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No mod chip needed for SSD it's probably because he didn't want to have to go into safe mode and do full system reinstall.

    • @merlozzo
      @merlozzo หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1) charging time is probably a result of repurposing what he had on hands, it's surely ok to look out for temps while charging, but here it seems the batteries are operating at a small fraction of their C power possibility, there's surely room for improvement. Most hobbyist chargers can deploy a thermal probe too, it wold not be that hard to implement I think at this point, charging in 2/3h would really be a turning point in usability. It's unclear if the sistem can run directly from AC, which would be a must have imho

    Unfortunately, I have seen portables like this before made by Ben Heckendorn so this isn't all that surprising. Ben's portable Xbox units weren't battery powered but very similar styling overall. The one thing I would have done though was swap out the hard drive with an SSD and the SATA units aren't badly priced. This would extend the play time a bit and have faster loads to boot.

    Girlfriend would not let him spend the money on a SteamDeck, or another portable console. That is the problem, replace the girlfriend problem solved.
    Now on top the project on hand, it's very impressive. In his case, this perfect for him but, if he was selling kits, finding everything, buying it all, batteries, soldering time.... It would be cheaper to buy a Steam Deck, or even a Ally (maybe not a Ally X but the base model).
    I do admire the work and passion here...

    Can't really complain about using 18650s on it, using holders instead of tab welding would be my preferred method for ease of swapping when they eventually go tho, but otherwise a solid choice, they're about as safe as you can get in Li-Ion therms. Dealing with the delicate pouch cells as in phones, some laptops and power banks sure is a much worse hassle, and would gain little in comparison, new 18650 cells, same amount, at 3 Ah each would give you close to 200w/h which is twice of what you're even allowed to carry on a plane, and still give you 2h play time..
    Same about the power supply situation: the charging circuit might be way underpowered, but using USB-C would not work properly either. That tops at 100w, while the PS4 slim alone gaming would drain that much. Add to it some watts from the monitor and you'll be draining your battery even plugged into the most powerful USB-C charger available in the market.

      @merlozzo หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was also thinking, about puch cells, would they surely provide enough C of discharge? With 10650 (and that many!) they surely can, using fewer puoch cells could be not easy on them, and yes they're definitely more dangerous! and in case of problems (cell swelling) thy would be way way worse than 18650

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@merlozzo with a 200wh capacity and 100w consumption pretty much any cells would be fine (half C discharge), but there are also the high discharge ones that they use even for car booster batteries, those can provide several hundreds of amperes in a single shot. Drone and RC batteries as well, very high discharge rates.
      Then again as we both mention, that comes with the penalty of any puncture being much easier and having serious consequences, dealing with those cells is either not as easy as an 18650 holder or you'll be stuck with RC/drone battery sizes, and not much weigh and size savings, if any (high discharge ones aren't as energy dense).

    This is a really cool project but needs some changes to the power system to be remotely practical. I would recommend using one of those 140w Anker powerbanks (maybe several of them). They can put out huge power, but also can be charged at 140w as well.

    I bet with software modding that you could underclock the CPU and get a little bit longer battery life. I'm not sure how much that would affect performance, but a slight underclock could be beneficial.

    Just use a Steam Deck. The good portable console mods try to be as compact as possible, close to handheld, this one is just a big plastic case to hold the battery and the normal PS4 Slim Mobo. If you glue a portable monitor to a PS4 and connect to a power bank, it would be as good as this, a little bit bigger, but safer. It will have a disc reader. And you could switch the power bank...

    That actually brings up a very good question, how strong is an original PS4/PS4 Slim versus a Steamdeck? I recall it being the equivalent of a GCN 1.0 Radeon 7850, which while a pretty decent budget gaming card until say 2017... is hardly anything special next to a modern APU.

    The PS3 was shown in the video a few times which confused me, but the PS4 also wasn't mentioned if it had Internet connectivity (i doubted it did have) or that the console could be turned on using the controller etc, or if the power is usable in other countries, such as UK power etc. It would be interesting to see an update if this is done in future TIto, thanks for the showcase though, interesting if someone would use these on a train journey etc.

    This is super cool as a concept. But also kind of funny that you can do this essentially by building a handheld gaming PC with similar specs.
    But it's the ingenuity of maintaining the hardware as is that makes it interesting
