      At $799 it is not out of reach. It makes it easier but you can get the same results in the end. I am always amazed at the quality of turned items done 200-300 years ago. They did those items on a spring lathe, no power except their foot power. I used two different very ancient Craftsman lathes for years before I could save up for the 1216. Keep your tools sharp and your wood turning Billy Bob Frank. Make something incredible for someone you love.

    Hey Mike, nice updates on our Lathe. If you make a washer for you headstock spindle out of a milk jug plastic it will make it much easier to remove your chuck. Also, I use a good thick magnet placed on the rear of the headstock to keep frequently used tools handy. I will be making that spindle lock magnet, that lock is a pain. Just an idea, I do take the tailstock off occasionally and I have some thick foam floor matting, I just place it on it behind my 1216. I guess I could put it on my extension that I have mounted for outboard turning. Now, this tip is odd I know, I bought a LED shop light from Walmart for under $20. I hung the light vertically at the end of my lathe to the back about one foot to give me the best light. It has made it so much more easy to see when turning inside forms. I do have an Ikea spot light but I rarely use it now.

      I am not a fan of plastic washers. I have seen them cause vibration. I have a 100 watt LED light directly overhead so actually my lathe lighting is pretty good.

      When I am severely time constrained, I still look for moments to get into my shop. I may take out the garbage, I may rearrange a few tools, or sharpen a bowl gouge, or identify the next piece of wood to turn. Makes it easier to turn when I do have more time.

    I turn bowls mostly from firewood so the 12: swing over the bed is great. Most of what I turn starts out out of balance. oes your bench mount work OK or should I think about those expensive legs>

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not turn bowls on it since I have Powermatic 3520b that is far superior. But my Laguna rests on top of my lathe stand on its rubber legs and does fine for everything I use it for. I would nver give up my lath stand for a pricey Laguna stand that does not provide any storage.

    Mike, just one other question about 1216 face plate. It has two set screws installed on the back of the face plate. It looks like it”s holding a separate part? Is that a removable part? I didn’t want to damage it.

    Hi Mike, I am new to wood turning and recently purchased a Laguna 1216. I enjoy watching your videos on turning and have learned a lot from them, thank you.
    My question revolves around the stability of the lathe. Many turning sites forums that I have read give the opinion that the lathe needs to be permanently mounted and not be on wheels or at least be stationary on all 6 rubber feet on the Laguna. The space is limited my garage and which requires all of my machines to be mobile. I purchased 4 double locking castors from Wood River ( 3" diameter, ⅜" spindle) and mounted them on the Laguna stand that I purchased with the lathe. I also bought some longer ⅜" bolts to mount the 2 inner feet on. The largest bowl that I have turned has been 10" diameter and have not experienced any problem with instability when turning. Does this seem like a reasonable solution to you or do you think I might have problems with stability if I started turning larger bowls on the outboard side? I appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yours sounds like a reasonable solution. Whether you will have a problem with outboard turning I can not say. But a factor is how well balanced the blank is. You probably saw my video on the stand I built for my Laguna with locking casters. It seems to do fine but I really do not turn bowls on it as I have my larger PM for that. But my stand seems pretty solid with the locking casters. Their could be an issue with all 4 casters not fully contacting the ground which could cause some vibration that will show up on larger work. It is possible you could find the "soft foot" and simply tap in a thin shim to get it level if needed.

    Good idea for the thread locker. Viewers need to be aware the colour normally indicates the strength. Blue is medium strength but able to be loosened with a wrench/allen key. Red is high strength which normally needs heat to loosen.
    The ruler is good for measuring, but also good to prevent items rolling off the top of the lathe stand. I have a piece of aluminium carpet hold-down for this purpose, but I may change to a ruler.
    The outlet bar is better than a couple of plugs, but it is not going to prevent damage from lightning strikes. I unplug my lathes and milling machines when not in use to keep them safe from lightning strikes. We had a close strike a few weeks ago. The neighbour had some damage to a satellite dish.
    The 10in lathe bed extension will stick out beyond the end of the stand. I made what I call a sled for my NOVA DVR XP. This allows me to slide the tailstock at 90 deg to the lathe bed. This gets it out of the way for most of the lathe work.
    I am happy to send pictures if this is of interest.
    Dave.

    After nearly 20 years with my Central Machinery lathe, I've finally stepped up to a Laguna 1216, largely to have more control over speed and the ability to reverse. QUESTION. I'm considering a Nova G3 chuck so that I can spin in reverse, but won't the screw that holds it in place damage the spindle? Any advice is always welcome. Many thanks.

    I found your tip video for the 1216. I had another question I forgot to ask you. For what ever the reason Laguna has changed the colors of the power switch. Its now white/black. The international standard for colors is RED is stop and GREEN is go. I noticed on your machine you have the older original colors that are proper. Why on earth would you change colors from the norm escapes me. I would like to hear what you think about this. It bugs me. I asked Laguna why they did this. They did not answer my question twice now. Thank You much. And yes, I will come back!

    For folks interested in outboard turning larger bowls, here is a great video: th-cam.com/video/rY4guCLZp_M/w-d-xo.html Note that Laguna will soon be offering a 20" tool rest extension. Paul makes some excellent points: get some experience before tackling a bowl this large. Cutting in against side grain is easier then sweeping across into end grain when hollowing. Need for larger then the standard jaws. Larger tool rest needed. Increased risk and challenges of finishing the bottom without the tool rest and the ease of cutting green wood rather then dry. Thanks for telling us about the new 20 inch extension that will be coming. For turning lots of spindle work it will be better then the 10".

    Mike, when you have time please reply. am looking to move up from my Nova Comet 11. Follow your tutorials appreciate your teaching. I probably won’t ever turn anything larger than 12-14” do you have experience using the 1216 Laguna with anything that size? I understand weight of wood must be considered as well as size. Thank you. Merry Christmas happy, healthy new year.

      Check out this video. th-cam.com/video/rY4guCLZp_M/w-d-xo.html I would turn larger projects on my PM. I rarely turn anything that could not be turned on a 12". There is little demand for large bowls and they are a lot of work.

  • @ianabbott785
    @ianabbott785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike, with you having a powermatic I take it you will not turn on the outboard. I am interested in this lathe as the ability to turn up to 16" occasionally would be a bonus. Have you tried turning on the outboard, any problems?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought about getting the extension but having a hard time rationalizing it since I don't need to turn a large bowl on this lathe. I would just get it to slide the tailstock for more clearance on some tool handles. If I do get one, I will certainly try the outboard and make a video. A video like that might bring in $15 of revenue. Not worth spending $150 for an accessory that would make a larger footprint in my shop. The small footprint is one of the reasons I got the Laguna.
