This kind of thing where ancient relic with links from the past to the present could work back even in our own history. Imagine a cache being discovered from pre-gallic sack of Rome someone just before the end of the republic. Showing the truth - the long lost truth that could unravel Octavian’s plans of imperium.
This could make a good direct-to-tv film. Assuming Disney doesn't mess it up trying to be cool,

I like the ideas in this story. You've got a group of what sounds like fleshed out characters in your mind, but they aren't fleshed out in the story. I think it sounds like the characters should be graduate or post grad students. By aging them up it makes the later happenings in the story more believable. You need to develop the part about the different groups who are against them. You also need to make the conflict the fight and the escape more tension building. I'd also suggest spending a bit more time on the political conflict, this could be done easily since the parent(s) are diplomates. Don't make everything happen so fast slow things down and build tension. You might include some bits about the history of the school and why that relic might have been there.
The story has lots of potential keep going, I want to see more adventures in this universe.
The "proofreading" is a bit lacking, the text could use some editing and using quotations when the characters talk, also the tone of Nora's voice is used when other characters speak.
Yeah, so kids have a say about the relic? Nope, they only had a chance to watch through a window as techs did work. Now kids who have a few weeks at school are computer archeologists. What shit.

Can't help but notice that the aliens in the art work all seem to be mammals and bipedal. We have no reason to believe this could be a standard.
We have no reason to not believe this will be a standard as well. It is not new to the current platforms, this was remarked on back in the golden age of science fiction. The summation of the debate was: we are bipedal mammals, until we meet an intelligent life form that is not we have no reason not to assume intelligence enough for civilization to happen requires bipedal mammals.
