Happy to have been born in 1981 in The Netherlands. When technology was not important, we enjoy "niksen", "gezelligheid", "uitwaaien". It helps that you also do everything by bike or walking. Just think anything that needs a car is too far and we don't do that if it is unnecessary. Groceries you can do by bike. You don't need clothes every week. Just 2 times a year. You don't need to eat outside. Just visit your friend or grandma and drink a cup of tea with biscuit. Just think simple, cosy, and keep your days empty. A book is better than searching up the busy shops. Simply don't let yourself fall for consumerism. Want less, work less, have more empty minutes, relax, watch outside. You are missing nothing. The world is not going to give you happiness, only stress. It is up to you to choose for "niksen" over "busy".

The U.S. needs to learn this. Sadly, even at retirement people just don't seem to hygge nearly enough! And all those years before retirement were just so busy. Ironically, the memories I treasure most from those years are the hygge ones; not the career, etc.

@Mary Contrary You are so right! - The real bases for our hygge here in Denmark is our "safety net" created by our relatively high taxes, removing a lot of stress factors: parenting, children gardens, school, studying and of course health issues (free doctors and hospitals - even the in other countries very expenses health issues), aid if you lose your job a.o. Not stressed by all of these factors (which in many countries could ruin you): This makes it quite easy to "hygge" even more here :-) - no worries :-)

Mary Contrary I remember my childhood when aunts, uncles, and cousins used to have family meal nights throughout the week with cards and domino games for the adults and yard games for the kids, Sunday meals after church at homes or the park. We don’t need government care (interference and control) in our lives. We need our lives back, without 24/7 workdays, without bringing work home to the family, without working during family hours. We need family, not government.

I'm reading this more than a year later. I do need more hygge in my life & everyday. Yes, life is different here in the states yet I see the benefit of this to be a lifestyle in incorporating mindfulness & gratitude in everyday things. I'm dealing with life & health issues and see I have a choice everyday. Even Anne Frank reminded us to see the good in hope.
I think Diane though lives in a lovely home and a wonderful community & embraces the culture is encouraging us to find peace in tiny moments even.
I wish I had done this when I was much younger. Wellness in balance and taking time to not miss the moments even in work. Contentment in things and finding joy. Being good to ourselves & others.🌷

I started to light a candle when I work in my kitchen. Not only when it is dark - always. That is kind of selfhygge to me
    ;-))😊

Tina Mar Me too! It makes the task of kitchen cleanup so much easier . I have also been lighting a candle each morning during my shower and makeup application . I now find myself "treating" myself whenever I find a beautiful candle and looking forward to me time.

So here in Canada my family started hygge from April to October , every Friday night after a long weeks work , we gather at my parents gazeebo with family and friends, neighbours and such for a Friday night gazzebo night. We all bring snacks and beverages of choice (wine 😉, beer or soda ) and enjoy chatting and catching up. It's been a tradition for 3 years now and we truly enjoy that down time with lots of laughs.

I wonder if there is doggie hygge. Many afternoons my newfie gets up on the bed and stretches out and waits for me to put my arm around her tummy and we sleep for 20 or 30 minutes. Very cozy. Thanks Diane. Love hearing about Denmark and help with flying.

You can actually use the term "hundehygge"! 😃 Though usually I would think of it as dogs playing together, chasing each other along the beach, etc.

So hygge is really about slowing down and getting back to the real essence of LIFE and LIVING and enjoying everything it offers!
Something we really need in this fast paced, high-tech world!
Well....I certainly needed that reminder Diane!
Despite being in the midst of summer (some days!) with no school runs to do, and no teenage activities cramming up our evenings, we still continue to pack our days with meaningless tasks! I still haven't enjoyed some "alone, no-rush" time with my teenage DD's!!!
So... I'm making a promise to myself...As soon as the sun breaks through the summer storm clouds, I will get the picnic blanket out, toss it under the shade of the giant elm tree in the back garden, pack a lunch and do a "dattehygge" with the "girls"!! Maybe they'll let me in on some secrets! haha!
Loved this little surprise chat today Diane! Tak! Helen

heythere georgiegirl Picnic under your tree sounds wonderful! I've forgotten how I used to love going on picnics with my kids(who are adults now) But, it's -25°C here in Winnipeg, Canada at the moment. Later, I'll bundle up well, go for a walk, pick-up a coffee somewhere & sit in a park for my hygge moment.

Just today we had søndag/eftermiddag hygge. Only the tree with white lights was still up, plus an assortment of leftover candles aglow on the mantle and table. Very cozy. We had our coffee that way with some cream puffs to go along with it. I had intended for my husband, daughter and me to have coffee by ourselves wherever we were in the house, but my daughter said she wanted to be all together in the living room, so we did and I lit the candles. The dog even participated and was allowed on the love seat beside me, and even got a hygge hug :) It is hard to pull yourself away from it, so we lingered with wine until dinner.
On pleasant days (even in winter when it is warm enough!) we love to have eftermiddagsmad of french bread and spreads in the back yard, or on the patio, and often we eat our evening meals outdoors too. I often light candles outside when it is dark (lucky for us that is between 8:30- 9 pm here) and I'm sure our grandson will remember that kind of sommer aften hygge!

Thank you Diane for the hygge information! My family and I had been hygge even though we live in America and we didn't even know it especially grillhygge. I remember going to state parks and having a barbecue and enjoying the scenery of the sand and mountains and each other's company. I like to hygge by drinking a hot drink, lighting a candle, listening to music and curling up with a blanket. Or sometimes instead of music, I' ll read a book. Another is sitting in a bathtub with candles, music and just relaxing. I need to do that often and is part of my mental health tool kit. Thanks for showing us how to relax and destress!

Hi Diane! Reading a hygge book inspired my daughter and me to visit Copenhagen last autumn. We rented an Airbnb for a week and fell in love with your beautiful city. Our first glimpse...the wind farms hugging the Copenhagen shore. We both admire the Danes' respect for ecology. I even drank your tap water after reading how pure it is. I NEVER drink tap water at home. To us, Copenhagen felt like a big, cozy village. I love your hygge videos and also when you show us the Danish foods you eat and the meals you make for your family. I'm American but my mother was Canadian French. She made her own liver pate. She also sauteed calves liver and onions and served it with mashed potatoes, gravy and beet salad. It was my absolute favorite. My first meal in Denmark was...liver and onions on mashed potatoes with pickled beets. Yum! Speaking of hygge, I am enjoying a mug of cocoa while snuggling with my 2 kitties, who are both EXPERTS at hygge. Do you have any pets? 😘 🇩🇰☕🍰🐱🐱

My hygge is with my husband and daughters, fishing at a pond with lots of trees, plants, pine cones etc...or streams in the mountains, taking a nature walk with the whole family&our dog ,rainy days inspire me to bake cookies&breads and can jams&jellies, preparing and eating meals from family recipes&traditions with my family from my husband's childhood&mine, fireplace, soft lighting, scentsy&candles, soft clothing, blankets coffee&cream while,1920's,30's&40's&multicultrual instrumental soothing music, snuggling our daughters, antique shopping with my husband, oldest daughter or my mother, farmers market shopping with my whole family, apple&berry picking, brushing our horses, reading books to our daughters...I suppose the only self hygge that i can think of enjoying alone is nice warm salt soak with essential oils, reading or watching a show about nutition, other cultures&my bible while drinking coffee&cream or warm spice tea is about the only thing that is really nice alone to me.Oh dear that is long...i could keep going

Just sent the link to my friend who lived in Denmark as a child. She and her mom used to take the ferry to Sweden together and have lunch on the boat and ride back home to Denmark. Before the bridge was there. Sure she'll appreciate the hyggelig memories. She saw the little book of hygge on her last vacation with the family, loved it, but I gave it to her before she had a chance to buy it, loving reading it. Thanks to you sharing with all of us. Loved this! I HAVE to ask about winterbathing, I've watched your video on it more than once but still can't understand how it's possible. I'm really intrigued by the extreme mindfullness part of it. live in Maine on the coast and run throughout most of the winter, but some days the windchill is too much, even just to run. I can't imagine stepping into the water, or more than that stepping OUT of the water even if I could find someone willing to go with me! Is the ocean different off of Denmark? I know the Atlantic here is chilled by a current from the north.

I really wish I could join a hygge group in my home town. I have only one close friend in the same city and it's just me and my husband. I wish there could be be a way of having hygge chapters by regions for those who don't have family or close friends in the same city. Of course, for safety it would be best to begin at a public place for those interested in hygge.

Oh, yes - cordial and squash! Though for some reason, I only associate squash as being orange/lemon. We never had a red one! LOL

Saftevand is cordial I think. My thought about råhygge is not like yours. For me råhygge is when you REALLY hygger and makes an effort to do it. Like when it’s Friday and you are home alone and take your duvet into the sofa, finds a good movie on Netflix and a pint of ice cream and just enjoy it fully

I should have spelled that differently, hygge .

Minimalism seems like opposite of hygge. Furniture and lamps by Danish designers like Poul Henningson, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Louis Poulsen, Hans Wegner looks sterile, minimalist, modern, sleek, plain. It looks the opposite of hygge/cosy. I think that more ornate furnitre is cosier, like Tiffany lamps, stained glass, overstuffed recliners, Himalayan pink salt lamps. I don't get how Weiking can say Danes use a lot of driftwood, birchwood, stone, etc., because the furniture I looked at didn't seem to incorporate that. Weiking says most Danes have at least one lamp by a certain famous Danish designer! That would make their homes LESS cosy, not more! It would be like making your home look more like a hospital or medical esthetics clinic, or like something from the Jetsons cartoon. I don't understand this.
