      HEY! Thanks for watching and commenting! Always a great time working on the garden. This was my first attempt at growing them in a box, Did you happen to see my other garden videos? Also, I made permanent boxes in which we grow everything, peas, beans, carrots, onions, etc. Plus we have an approx. 20x40' garden area! Love it! Cheers! I harvested some last week too. My tricks are:
    1. Only 1 or 2 plant in a 15gallon bucket, starting with 1 small sprouting potato with only enough soil to cover it. When plant stem and leaves growing growing tallet, added more soil. Add fertilizer once a while.
    2.each bucket yields 2-5 lbs, enough for 1 meal for our family. You can harvest 1 bucket for 1 meal.
    The advantages of planting in a 15 gallon bucket:
    Easy to manage the sun since they are portable;
    Easy to harvest fresh for each of your meal;
    Easy to deal with problems. Some of my plants almost died but were revived quickly as I can handle in a 15gal container.
    Easy to harvest by shaking 1 each time in a slightly larger container. So much less mess to handle.
    Last year, I used 1 potato and it only yielded 1 potato;) But I learned and this year is quite different. Don't give up!
    Homegrown potato taste much better than store bought somehow.

    Hey Wayne, nice harvest, I'm sure they will taste excellent! I live in zone 3b, and have tried for 3 season to grow in towers. My results were frustratingly small. I found the effort of attaining material, time to build the boxes and extra soil medium required was not justified by the results. This year I have grown potatoes in large pots/bags and the boxes I did use, I only grew them in 12" deep and didn't add all the extra boards to make the tower. I have used far less soil, It took me far less time at the beginning of the year, and I have been tripling my production. Also, very easy to dump a single pot as needed. Standing over a wheelbarrow with a single pot is much better for my back!! I found the plant seemed to spend most of it's energy growing up, and not putting it'e efforts into rhizome production. Just my 2 cents worth, happy gardening!

    • @stumpr1
      @stumpr1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thanks for watching! 12" of soil, that is what I will be doing next year and I will record that as well. No hilling or weeding makes this so simple to grow. But, I did not mind building something out of scrap wood, now it is fire wood!

      I guess It very depends on the type of potatoes you grow! There are potatoes who built potatoes only potatoes around mother potatoe. So you can add soil on top as much as you want but they do not built potatoes higher - more in the opposit, they grow more bad because of the high weight of the soil. But there are other types of potatoes they really built new potatoes at the whole plant up to high. This types are perfect for high towers growing! One of this type is 'Rote Emmalie' Rote = red. There is a german youtuber named 'Neues vom Landei'. She made experiments in this way. Highly interesting and maybe you want to have a look there. It is in german but maybe pictures help to understand you. Neues vom Landei - Kartoffeln im Sack I guess it was #4. I also tryed plant potatoes in bags because of my little garden and yes I also see so. unfortunately I do not know what is zone 3.... Much luck and good results in next year.

      ali that hilling potatoes does is protect them from the sun. potatoes produce from the bottom of the seed only, they do not grow up the stem like many people say.

    Listen buddy applaud ur efforts , may I suggest a laundry basket , it’s tall with a garbage bag in it ? Or buckets ? You can have a bigger yield . The type of potatoe you plant according to your zone also should be researched , try red or purple skinned . I noticed the size of your whites are nice 👍🏼. The smalls could be replanted to still grow . Orange peels burn orange peels no mosquitos ! Vick’s also works . I’m proud of you .

Vick's, I'll try it. orange peels???? never heard that one before, but what the hey....Cheers! Wayne in Winnipeg at -40C yesterday morning! No Kidding..

    I grew potatoes in the early 90's, had no clue what layering dirt meant .. but they turned out pretty good anyway .. maybe smaller, but they where the red potatoes, not bumper .. but plenty enough. I didnt amend the dirt much and theres a lot of clay around here, so maybe that helps when I didnt hill them. Im telling you the passing on of knowledge by way of internet, even youtube alone is immeasurable. In Houston tho, no way to store them its just to darn hot. Bush Green Bean grew like many rabbits though .. I meant they went to town and back many times. I didnt thin them like they are suppose to be and grew them in a block like 4 x 4' or so. Lovely green beans. I think they are the easiest most prolific plant to grow .. as good as weeds !! lol

    one thing i was think about i would drill some random hole in the panels with some screen over them for extra water drain and heat and air in the soil , plug there got be lots of acid in soil so i will put pine needles on bottom then soil over them and then seed spuds , but i think your on the right track and it saves space also

      water drainage or over watering was never a problem. The sunlight in that area of the yard is immense. The only problem was, I planted the wrong seeded potatoes. This spring I am making a larger planter type box. Check my other videos and you will see the first permanent one that I made. Making another one and going to plant various veggies in them. Thanks for watching and commenting. Wayne S.

    I believe that 5 gallon buckets are good enough. Put 8 inches of dirt in the bottom then put 4 or 5 pieces in it then cover the up with 1 and a half feet of dirt on top. When they pop up start watering them. It takes a lot of energy out of the plant when you do towers.

    • @stumpr1
      @stumpr1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Nathan! thanks for the comments again, really do appreciate them. We did 2 plants in 5 gallon buckets this past season, worked just great. I never started them with a lower soil level, just had filed the bucket, then added seeds and let them go. I should have shot a video of them..... This type of box, I would not do again, not that I minded it at all. just going for a more permanent style box[es] where we can plant which ever veggies we want. Read below, I needed indeterminate potato seeds for this type of box. Cheers ! Wayne

    • @rebelstudio9378
      @rebelstudio9378 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that there are one or two types the can grow in towers that away but most grow a little down into the soil and up little. About a foot and a half is all they grow in. Red potatoes will grow a long the stem when you do them in a tower but they will always be small and it takes the energy away from the plant to be able to get them to a good size.

    • @stumpr1
      @stumpr1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yup, have to agree on all this. Soil and water are the 2 biggest things, loose soil and the right moisture are keys to growing things. Plus you got to have good seeds to begin with. Was just thinking about building a 6'x4' green house, just something small in order to get things going early. I have almost unlimited FREE lumber thru work, so I might just jump onto this for this coming spring......maybe.. Cheers!

    Fingerling are determinate. For a box may I reccomend indeterminate which grow tubers at multi levels as the plant grows..
    Whereas determinate grow just below where you planted them and a little above.

      Yup, and thanks. Learned that well after I harvested the lot. I did try indeterminate ones, but not a lot of sucess with that either. Just going to keep trying different seeds/box size/soil levels, etc. Always a great time in the garden! Thanks for watching! Stumpr1 Cheers!

    Wayne. At least you made a great effort. I congratulate you..please do it again. Try to figure out where you did not go right and go at it again. Others have done well. They did not quit when things did not go right. Maybe you should try soil depth as that of a 5 gallon bucket. And not as deep as your soilbox allowed.. all of the very best to you.

    Potatoes keep growing as long as you keep filling it up with dirt they will follow it to the top if you have any green potatoes that have been hit by sunlight do not eat them the green in there is like arsenic put a little bit of soil in the bottom of your box and fill it up with put a little bit on each time the plants grow but do not put soil and put old straw to rolled hey it’s starting to decompose and you’ll be surprised how many potatoes you get

      Oh yes guaranteed they are good. Not sure where you live a lemon tree is also good outside if you live in a hit climate and inside by the window best the sun. You could have them all do the peppermint and you will see a big difference. You also should consider to have a crate instead of a closed box which holds the water that creates these mosquitoes. Your potato plants need a little oxygen. Try it next time. God bless. Careful mosquitoes carry germs and malaria.

    I have planted many a failed potato crop. Seems my error is a common one. I tried to grow potatoes when the temperature was above 70 degrees. Potatoes like it cold and wont grow tubers if the temp is higher than 70 degrees. The plant grows beautifully when its warm but no tubers. I had better luck in the winter. Later I found one purple potato that seems to be growing above 70 degrees. So maybe its just a matter of the type of potato. I'm no expert but I hope this info helps.
