    Something similar happened to me. When my son was a toddler, he apparently took a potato from a bag of potatoes I purchased and threw it in my front yard. I didn't know he did it at the time. A month or so later, I went to get some dirt for a flower pot, and when I started to dig, I found the yard was full of potatoes. I was completely baffled and my son was excited. I said, "I don't know how this happened!" And he said, "I threw a potato out there, mom! My potato grew!" 😂

    One year we accidentally grew some of the best and most prolific spaghetti squash in our compost pile when we threw rind and seed into it months before. There were more than 30 squash! There was so much that I couldn't preserve and store it all, so all our neighbors and friends enjoyed some of our bounty too. What fun surprises from nature!

      I love spaghetti squash. I just cut them in halves, scoop out the seeds and that mushy stuff and then season the "belly" and edges with: Pimento seasoning, Himalayan pink salt, dried onion flakes, garlic granules, cayenne pepper powder and turmeric powder mixed in avocada oil and then bake till done. Most delicious! When I heard about this type of squash, I did not believe the ladies and could not wait for the finished product. The next day I told them that it was after I saw that the flesh looked like spaghetti that I believed them. I told them thaf I believed that they had been pulling my legs. I suppose, when you don't know, you don't know! My darkness had been dispelled! Hope you continue to be surprised and blessed by nature.PVEL.

    My best tomato plants last year grew out of the compost pile. The ones I deliberately planted ended up succumbing to disease after a very wet summer. I've been watching and learning from you but never dared to comment about how I grew potatoes back when my kids were growing up back in the 70s. Now I feel I can say what I did every year without anyone doubting me. We were not well off so I was very frugal, 1 eye per planting. Never had a failed plant and they all produced 10-20 taters per piece of potato with 1 eye planted. Never washed them for storage either. They kept longer that way.

      @@simplifygardening - I've watched the beginning of your recommended video. That first potato you cut out one sprouted eye. I would have cut that potato into 4-5 pieces, even if there were no sprouts at all and planted them. I'm telling you they all grew and produced 10-20 knuckle sized spuds, some even bigger. Our growing season is from the long weekend of May till the end of September. Never started any of them before putting the potato pieces in the ground. Never used compost. Never used fertilzer. Never watered. I used reds bought in the store and in later years I was given about 10 blues from Newfoundland. Did the same with them with the same results. Maybe God (or whoever) made it all possible. I don't know how it worked but it did.

    Hi Tony, I use a peeler which give very thin skins. My wife uses a knife and peels them thicker, I think the thicker peelings have the eyes with enough flesh to make them viable and in the past, I've harvested some spuds from the bin and they've been really tasty like new potatoes! Great vid, thanx for posting.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I use a peeler too as long as the eyes are intact they grow

    • @PrentisHancock1
      @PrentisHancock1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When peeling, cut about half an inch into the potato below the chits, and the rest of the potato is yours to eat. This gives them a good chance to fully develop roots and a good stem before the flesh runs out of energy. The other thing is, like you see in this video, buy and use potatoes that you really like to do this with. My favourite is Desiree red potatoes, when I can find them.

    Years ago I had a large compost bin beside an old crab apple tree. One year vines started to grow from the compost up into the tree. In the fall we harvested 14 VERY large Hubbard squash from the branches of tree. Some were hanging from the tree like ornaments. I had the entire neighborhood bringing friends to see the "pumpkin tree". I even found one growing in the centre of the bin, it was almost pure white in colour. The weight of squash was unbelievable. The smallest was 15 pounds, the largest 72 pounds. I never had that happen again. But from then on I planted squash seeds at the base of the tree in the summer. I no longer live in that house, but I really wish we had never moved. The garden was an old parking spot and after 20 years of compost was wonderful.

    Watching this again after nine months. You have harvested more from your compost bin than I got from 8 containers! And most of mine were quite small, none very large. I think the heat and drought caused them to stunt, despite watering them as you had suggested in another video. Definitely need to make the potato trellises like you suggested.
    I also had free range chickens that would get up in the containers and trample the foliage. Got rid of them as well. Praying that the lessons learned will make for a much better crop next year.

    I put anything biodegradable in a compost heap, even newspaper. . . .
    I leave anything to grow and just keep covering because like this you can get a bonus crop but when something grows, the roots help to break down and makes an even better compost.
    You have got some top shelf compost/potting soil there. Not to mention the beautiful potatoes. Totally organic and a real reliable seed potato. You just know that those potatoes want to grow and they will grow.
    I once had this happen with a red sweet potato and i got sweet potatoes from the same bed for years after that and they were also top shelf quality also the best place to keep a potato is in the ground.
    Well done. You have a gorgeous yard.

    Yes! That's amazing. And that's what I love about potatoes. You can get so much out of one harvest. Sometimes, in my potato basket, I have potatoes that I don't get around to use, and they shrivel up a little and grow roots. I split them up where the root is.
    And they're very easy to grow. I stick the potato with the root side into the dirt. Cover and water. And then a green sprig sprouts and here in my state? I can harvest them right before fall. And I get so many little potatoes. Just wash them and with skin on, I boil them or bake them. They're delicious.

    When I was young my family decided to plant tomatoes in our backyard. It was a small yard in a rowhouse with thin, hardscrabble soil over clay and even sunflowers struggled, so we didn't think the tomatoes would grow. Not only did they grow, they started clambering _everywhere._ They groped their way up and over the fence into neighbouring yards, escaped the bed to strangle the grass and spread tendrils across the whole yard. It turned into a vast, dense tomato jungle which produced so copiously that even after jarring them and filling every container we owned with batches of tomato sauce, and after gifting everyone we knew with all the tomatoes they wanted, we were forced to let the tomatoes rot simply because we had nowhere to put them.
    The rental company sent us a letter complaining about the tomato invasion exploding into other people's yards and into public space, so my father had to go in and rip every plant out by the roots to stop them. I'm convinced they'd have taken over the whole city if we'd let them. And the very next year the tomato jungle sprang up again without us touching the yard. In fact, no amount of pruning and digging and cutting would _stop_ them. We were eventually forced to lay down crushed rock and paving stones over the whole yard to try to stop them -- and they _still_ heaved the pavers up to spring out between them whenever we stopped pouring herbicide down the cracks.
    Scary.

    This is why I love my compost bin. Every year, something grows from it that leaves my scratching my head. The most amazing one was about 3 years ago, I didn't go to my bin during the entire summer. I go in the fall and see tons of this squash that I've never seen before nor planted. Turns out, my wife bought delicata from the community farm and threw the left over seeds in our kitchen compost bucket. I then threw them in the compost bin! I've since saved the seeds and grow them every year!
