    Congratulations, yours has just been nominated for the TH-cam Nit-picking Upload Of The Year Award.
    Nothing wrong with the Lyman primer catch system. I own the same press. I also own a Rock Chucker II, and it is more likely that the RCBS will on occasion throw one or two wide to the right, or low and outside the plate.
    One or two errant spent primer extractions does not constitute a system failure! Nor does trying to manufacture a system malfunction for whatever reason.
    If I may paraphrase a statement made famous a few centuries ago, but certainly begs repeating in this day and age of the ubiquitous TH-cam gun channel, "Me thinks thou doth protest too much!" 😂

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah the original system was functional and for most people I would say not an issue. My particular OCD however would not let me focus on much else other than if the primers were landing in the spent primer tray lol. It's more of a me thing, and I thought the system may help others.

    Innovative collection method. Might suggest a slimmer bottle. As for the primers launching out of the upper port, it appears that your bench is not up to the task. The press looks like it is leaning forward instead of sitting level and it tips forward with each lever pull. This will affect the trajectory of the primer as it slides down the tube inside the ram. The plausible problem would be the spent primer bounces off the inner walls and catches the port for re-priming, sending it into the wild blue yonder. I would suggest that leveling the press on a stable bench would reduce or nearly eliminate the issue.

      Hi!
      Thanks for commenting on the video. You brought up some good points and I'll check the bench and press to see if they are level, and double check how much movement is in the press when the arm is moved. Thank you!

    I found trimming a piece of cardboard to press into the priming arm channel in the ram all but cured wild primers. Cheap, fast, effective. Push it in until it’s inside the ram circumference just under flush and it won’t bind between the ram and bore. Even if it does, cardboard won’t cause damage. Remove and replace.

    Thanks for reviewing the primer catch system for the All American 8; while I can't get Dustin's bottle catcher because I am in Australia, the Lyman catch system seems okay if less perfect than Dustin's catcher. I have the Lyman T-Mag and it captures only about 50% or less. because the primers exit the slot in the ram high up or bounce out of the tray. The AA8 seems to be an improvement on the T-Mag although the priming system does not seem to be a time-saver based on other reviews.

      Agreed, I prime using the rcbs hand primer, so the on press priming system isn't a benefit to me. I can see if someone doesn't have a seperate priming system it makes sense for Lyman to incorporate it.

      @@jeffrosjourney6170 I would rather Lyman lowered the price and made the on-press priming tool optional so folks could spent that money on a better stand-alone priming system.

      I agree with everything you said. Priming off press is my preferred method, and Lyman could have saved a few bucks by not incorporating it. I think the reason Lyman incorporated it, was basically because the AA8 is a slightly “different” copy of the Redding T7

    If it uses a standard soda bottle thread, homebrewer "yeast" bottles/packaging would be perfect though it would be limited in primers it could hold (virtually same diameter as the screw in portion for the length of about 3").

    I bought one of these presses not long after they came out and really wanted to like it. But I also had no end of problems with the depriming system. Primers missing the catch bin was annoying, but the biggest problem I had was that too often small rifle and small pistol primers would get stuck on the lip of the chute in the frame and then bind up on the outlet hole in the ram. Then the handle would bind and the entire press would lock up. Not sure if Lyman has fixed this issue since I bought mine, but I was really disappointed in this press for that reason.

      Hi Nells,
      Yes I feel your pain. I had the same trouble with my press. It was pretty frustrating to say the least. Since I started using this product I have had zero problems with the primer discharge system. The only issue I'm having now is that the ram seems to have pitting or tooling marks on it that provide resistance when actuating the ram up and down. Also when I lube the ram, the lube will work its way down to the metal cross piece that joins the ram to the arm mechanism and it will start to walk out.
      Overall I like the turret style press, BUT Lyman did not do a great job with this press overall. Eventually I'll replace it with the Redding T7 turret press.

      @@jeffrosjourney6170 That's exactly what I did - bought a Redding T7 to replace the Lyman. Except for having one less station, the T7 is better in every way and has given me zero hassles!

    When the decapper pushes on the primer, the primer pops out in any direction, not necessarily directly down. Statistical, once in a while, one will fly out the window, and nothing can be done about that. I stand corrected, the modification closed the window. Now the primers have no choice but to fall all the way down and exit the trash port. On the bright side, before the mod, none of the caps that came out of the lower primer trash hole missed the cup.

    • @jeffrosjourney6170
      @jeffrosjourney6170  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment sir! I have to admit I'm a little OCD about the primers, otherwise I would have left the original system alone. The pieces do work well together and as a whole system, overall I've been very happy with it.

    I suggest you deprime in a different phase. Check out the Harvey Deprimer. An incredible tool! But if you're only interested in catching the primers I don't leave that up to any device by the usual companies. Not sure you could do much better than the video shows.

    • @jeffrosjourney6170
      @jeffrosjourney6170  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the info, and I appreciate your feedback! I checked out the deprimer. It looks like a nice tool, however I don't think it's for me. I typically like to deprime and resize in the same operation, however I do have and use a universal depriming die if I'm going through brass that uses the same shell holder.
      This may be my cheap side coming out, but 69.95 for the tool seems a bit high, although I say that without any first hand use of the tool, so the opinion may be mute.

    Have you ever checked the runout of your reloads? While you were (just) decapping the 308, I noticed how much the index handle was moving.

    My RCBS Rock Chucker is much worse! If I'm de-capping standard primers maybe 90% make it into the catch bin. If I'm de-capping crimped military primers maybe 75%. Technique or speed has little effect. Sometimes the primers will get wadded up between the ram and catcher and the worst is when they get jammed between the ram and base of the press! Just doesn't seem like it would be that hard for these reloading manufacturers to make something that reliable works!

    • @jeffrosjourney6170
      @jeffrosjourney6170  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian!
      I have not used the on press priming system yet. I purchased an rcbs hand priming tool, that way I can prime a large batch while sitting on the couch watching tv with the dogs 😜
      I’m can’t see a particular reason why the in press priming wouldn’t work. it would just be slower than the hand primer because you would have to load by hand each individual primer. I’ve heard the oils on our hands “could” potentially lead to primer contamination unless we wear gloves.

  • @davecollins6113

    No big need for the bottle. If he'd split the chute closer to the top and made the bottom half with a solid plugged end to slide over the upper half, it would be shorter and just as easy to empty.
