One thing I know about these s series saturns that most people dont talk about is sometimes the crankshaft sensor goes bad on them causing them to start then not start the next time.
I completely understand your frustration. These are usually good reliable cars, but occasionally, things like this can happen. For instance, my father has a '97 SL2, and it started to exhibit symptoms exactly like this a couple of years ago. Although in my father's case, every time it didn't want to start on its own, he'd just put his foot to the floor, turn the key and it would eventually fire up. Well, after about a week of giving it a little extra "help" to start, the engine started to mysteriously overheat while on the road one day (fortunately made it back without any permanent damage done to the engine), and the "low coolant" light started to blink on and off, although the engine temperature gauge surprisingly read normal rather than hot. Once taken into the shop the next day, the mechanic determined that my father's car needed a new radiator (there was a crack in it) and new radiator hoses as well. Ever since then, the car has been running great, but it now runs a little rough once fully warmed up, which is a known issue with these cars as they get older, aside from burning oil every now and then and the issue with the sagging roof liner, too. All in all, though, these were reliable cars and it's a shame that GM was so stupid to kill what once was a reliable product. Anyhow, it probably wouldn't hurt to check the radiator or its hoses, either. You could also have fouled up spark plugs or a bad fuel pump. Whatever the case may be, I hope you have solved this issue by now. If not, then I hope that I have helped you in any way.
I had a 2000 SL2 for years and had repeated issues with starting it. The coolant temp sensor (went out about 110,000 miles) would make it start funny, have to pump the gas and it would die sometimes too, temp gauge always read no heat, that's an easy $12 fix and a good place to start(sounds like you already did that, this comment is for other people looking for answers to a similar problem). The next thing that happened was a no crank issue, this was an anti-theft system malfunction(happened periodically from about 120,000 until I sold the car). There is a method of restarting the anti-theft by turning the key to acc for ten minutes and back 3 times or something like that, you'll have to look that up. The last time, and this might be relevant to what is happening in this video, the car would crank but wouldn't start ever, I'd have to push start it until eventually even that didn't work either. That was the crankshaft sensor (went out around 170,000). After the crankshaft sensor it ran fine until I sold it about 30,000 miles later.
Hi. I know two years later , but I got a 1998 Saturn sl2 with 76k miles and mine doesn’t start sometimes then sometimes it starts fine and the starter was replaced. It’s at Midas now should I suggest the crankshaft sensor because it doesn’t throw an engine light or anything . Thanks if you do reply to my comment
Very common on saturns if any fuel lines were disconnected,First,check fuel pressure if no pressure, but pump makes the ummmm! Noise. Remember the fuel filter also works as a fuel regulator replace it with original AC Delco only. Bad fuel filter will cause intermittent start,accompanied with code p0172 do not install aftermarket filter.If you have good fuel pressure (45 psi or more).The problem is something else, but please start checking that you have enough fuel.
BRO I HAD EXACTLY THAT ISSUE ON MY SATURN 2001 SL2, I ALMOST SHOOT ME BUT IT WAS ONLY THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, GO TO AUTOZONE, IT IS TOO CHEAP, I PAID 19 DOLLARS AND DONE, MY CAR STARTED PERFECTLY, HOPE YOU FIXED ALREADY. CHEERS
Alright I am back. And I know what this is. Are you ready? Its something stupidly simple. If you track it down, you'll be lead to the crank sensor. If you have no spark and you just changed it and it worked before this, then it should be fine. Instead do me a favor and take a quarter inch ratchet and tighten the bolt that holds it in. This was my case. It was why I was getting no sparks. Only cranks. Bad news for those of you who have replaced this and are experiencing this is, you can't just use a 3/8" drive ratchet as it is too big and will not be able to properly tighten. I would like to point out that vibration such as cranking and other can loosen this bolt. Its a simple fix. I hope you all will see this and try it. First though, go and buy a crank sensor to put in, gotta be sure.
I have a 96 Saturn SW2 that the fan motor wasn't engaging and was causing the car to overheat. Changed it the other day and then my car wouldn't start at all. Tried aether and then tried to jump as well, still no start. Made the same sound as well. Giving her the gas did absolutely nothing. I do have a check engine light and a service engine soon light pops on while I try to start her up. I get back once I find what it is.
Been researching for my 94 sl2 symptoms are a bit different but I do know these have issues w valve cover gasket and valve seals which would cause bad compression on all effected cylinders
Yeah I had the same issue with the car wouldn't start at all I did the exact same thing you did here's how I fixed it I checked the spark plugs and switched out the old ones with new ones and replace the old spark plug ignition wires with brand new ones and the car ran perfectly fine
saturn was in an accident. drove it home then it sat for a year. then charged the battery up and a friend drove it to there house to work on it. now the car wont start. tried charging the batery , checked the fuses under the hood, anybody have any suggesttions what has happened?
Saturn’s were made cheap and always had problems. I had a 2002 Saturn Coupe. Only 12,000 miles when I purchased it used and after 2 years the engine seized up. That thing was a lemon 🍋 and when it died it only had 79,000 miles on it ugh. This was a long time ago though. And yes I kept up with the routine maintenance on the car. It was either abused and fixed up before I paid for it at the dealership or it was just poorly built.
2002 Saturn Sc3 driven down rhe hwy lost fuel pressure. Towed it home fuel pump not working. Trouble shot all relays and fues good! Power to fuel pump. Still no start. Whats up?
I don't speak English pretty well I hope you understand this do you check spark plug.already. gas filter.. go to the hood.en find the fuses.read the top fro inside.one does is for gas.check.or change. Normally in 15 inperes. I'll let you know just in case if you drive I can help you no more
did you ever find out what the problem was. my car does the SAME EXACT THING. I have changed the tps cps and spark plugs. I checked timing, fuel pressure and compression. everything was good except my compression none of the cylinders we're reading right but I figure it's just the tool bc everything was off and way low. I still have yet to pull injectors out but would one bad injector cause this same problem that's in the video. and yes my battury is fully charged
I just got a 99 saturn and i took it for a 5 minute drive, then i parked in front of my house and turned it off, a minute later i try turning back on and the engine doesn't turn over, the beeper for the door open and the lights inside don't come on Help?
Triston Lyman My first Saturn was a '99 SC1 and the guy sold it to me with a bad alternator, check that. They go on those cars sometimes and I'm pretty sure all the s-series cars use the same parts. The car refused to start the day I came to get it after paying for it and after jumping it, it drove like there was a hole through the engine. Hope this helps. I would maybe even check in a scrap yard if you have to. If not, look up "Rock Auto" on google
regular manufactory replacements are a must .. Timing belts after millage say to do a change, and fuel filters and fuel pumps are as important as oil changes and air cleaner changes, a car need to have parts replace before they break and cause more damage and more money to fix. a Timing belt or chain runs around 500 to 1200 on many cars, why people sell them while they are still running at the time they need to be changed and but a new car.. pass it on to next person and they have no idea as to what is to befall them when it stops running, Bend valves are common because the cars today have NO CLERANCE in heads when a belt or timing chain breaks,,, so you have more to fix or replace such as a valves or a whole head,, many cars you have to remove the engine to replace the timing belt or chain... GOOD LUCK at finding a new car and ALWAYS ask and get a receipt of when the timing belt or chain was changed last so you know that a MAJOR problem is not there for you in the near future,

Need to check if you have fuel pressure. If no fuel pressure. Check fuel pump fuse and/or relays, if ok, fuel pump is shot
This doesn't sound like a fuel issue, it sounds like either a blown engine or bad compression or air flow

Take the positive battery cable off, wait 30 min. hook back up. This will reset the computer.

We have a 2002sadrun it shuts right off the door looks don't work and gas gage don't work and fuel pump is working what would it be

try the camshaft sensor that fixed my saturn
You clearly don't know how to jump a car, you don't just let the other car idle, you must rev the other car while trying to start the dead vehicle.
