  • Today we depart from Onancock, Virginia nice and early and have a long cruse across the Chesapeake! This time of year we don't have much daylight and we need some to get into our ideal anchorage so we have an early start. You have to have multiple plans for how the day pans out so we have some back ups but we will be putting Pivot to the test. 10 hours to cross and our first time on the Western Shore, let's see how it goes!
    Thanks for watching!
    Cheers from the Loop,
    Jennifer and Elliot

    ABOUT US
    Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive head first into boat life, and kick off America’s Great Loop.
    The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
    Thank you for following us along our journey!

    Hi guys;
    Finally made it to our trawler school in Dania Beach for 4 days. We are at anchor tonight in Hollywood. Tomorrow starts the big learning. Didn’t think that we were going to get out of Atlanta with all of the cancellations. What a beautiful night. Temp is 73 and water is like glass. Thanks. D.

      Oh sweet! How'd it end up going David? Sounds like you had fantastic weather. We are currently in Vero (Velcro) Beach and might get stuck haha, it's too nice.

    That looked like a good safe crossing other than being cold. Nice to see Jennifer skippering the boat more. Maybe I should call her Skipper Jen. :-)

    Hey, Jen and Elliot. We initially found you guys when you were on Adventures of A + K's channel and we just finished binging all of your boat acquisition and Great Loop videos. Thanks so much for providing all of that great content! We have thoroughly enjoyed it. It has been fun getting to know both of you and Ollie.
    I have to say that we held our breath a little bit when you started to rip up your decking but we are really impressed with how it has turned out. We'd love to know how much you ended up spending on that project so we know how much you actually saved.
    Looking forward to watching more of your adventures in 2022 and we can't wait until you are able to begin your Great Loop journey again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

      Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Thank you so much for coming by - we love Adam and Kathryn and can't wait to hang out with them again... they have a huge adventure planned for 22' though so its going to be awesome! I'll have to get you the full numbers but I believe our cost of materials and tools was around 2-3k - the vast majority of that was the epoxy... A typical yard would have charged anywhere from 15k - 20k. If it took them as long as it took me - that would be closer to 25k but of course I was slower than the professionals :) So conservatively we saved 15k! But with the cost of the boat as a whole it was either going to be a DIY project or a never project. Cheers and thanks for saying hi!

      @@SchoandJo That's wonderful that you were able to save yourself so much money. It looked like back-breaking work but now that it's done I'm sure it feels pretty satisfying!
      Yes, we saw that A & K are headed to Alaska this year. So exciting. We can't wait to see more of their adventure. Looking forward to continuing to watch you guys as well and we're not at all jealous that you're heading south while we're stuck in the great white north (Michigan.) LOL Take care!

    There's a very protected Anchorage just north of the Hampton Anchorage at Ft. Monroe that we use all the time. Check it out when you go north again.

      Thanks Kim! We use an iPad Pro with Navionics & Aqua Maps for our portable chart plotter. We also have a Garmin GPS unit permanently mounted to our interior and exterior helm stations!

    Invest in an Autopilot. You can relax more; saves fuel.

    Do you/would you have advice to newbies about to head down the ICW this upcoming spring? Anything we need to watch out for? We plan to head to North Carolina likely like Bellhaven and that area.

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say just try and plan out your tides! It'll a) help with your speed and b) help with your sanity on some of the sections that are shoaling. Having 6-7 feet of tide in Georgia for example is the difference between having a carefree cruise and frantically following the magenta line 😁 We would typically try and leave on a mid-rising tide that way we can cruise all day but somedays you'll have tradeoffs...

    If you are going to tow your dinghy (not recommended for long term) you will want to get a floating line so it doesn't get sucked into your prop.
