This is a true Southern Red velvet recipe! Many think a Red velvet cake is a chocolate cake and that’s absolutely wrong, they are two different cakes. A red velvet cake is a buttermilk cake with a hint of cocoa and vanilla, the less cocoa powder the better!
Nikki Bryant maybe where u come from but down south if your red velvet is super dark red and all we taste is chocolate we damn near don’t even wanna eat it. Less cocoa is best ☺️☺️
Agreed! Red velvet cake is supposed to be RED not burgundy which happens when people add too much cocoa powder. Red velvet cake is definitely not a chocolate cake and has a distinctive flavor; you’re only supposed to taste a hint of cocoa!
Red velvet cake isn't supposed to be with a rich chocolate flavor. I get so disappointed when someone tempts me with a piece and I taste chocolate first...ughhh 🙄
Imstressless I agree! I can tell if the cake is "dark red" I already know they put to much cocoa powder in the batter and I don't want chocolate cake! Lol
Red velvet ISN'T a chocolate cake! Lol It's not suppose to taste like chocolate cake. This recipe is exactly the correct way to make a real red velvet!
Hi all. Just an FYI: do you know the original Waldorf Astoria red cake got its color from beets? The frosting was not cream cheese, but a cooked frosting (which is delicious). I find it interesting to see how recipes get changed and adapted over the years to use the regional ingredients people would have available. Great video, Kevin does a great job explaining what he is doing. Yea for teachers.
My mama makes the best from scratch red velvet cake and frosting but she doesn't add nuts at all.she knows it's my favorite cake and I'm very greedy with this cake...lol I'm definitely giving this a like so I can have this recipe
I love red velvet cake ! Am going to make this for my birthday this ! Which is August 18th! ! I have always wanted to make one this year is it! Thank you❤
Thank you for this video and recipe I will be making this soon the color came out great that's how a red velvet cake should look bright red not burgundy 🥰 thank you for sharing this it looks great
Hi! Very good looking cake. You don't have store it in the refrigerator. With all the butter and sugar in the frosting, it's no need. Just keep it in a covered cake plate and it will be fresh for about 5 days at room temperature as long as it is sealed. Wish I had a slice now, Lol.
@@TamiDunn Yes, a popular bakery in the ATL called "A Piece of Cake" says that they don't refrigerate cakes that have cream cheese frosting such as the Red Velvet or butter cream frosting cakes. They said their reason was that the refrigerator can actually dry the cakes out. So, just wanted to pass that along. LOL
I was thinking of making red velvet cake as on my mom watches game of thrones channel the red wedding is coming up thought it would be a fun little joke.
Tasty just came out with the history of the red velvet cake. It used to be layered with different colors. Cocoa was one of the layers. Red was one layer and two with just the color of the dough. That is where the chocolate came from.
The best red velvet cake I had was from Target. It had a layer of chocolate ganache in it. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find it that past few years.
I enjoy y'all video I will be watching it again to do my very first cake this Thanksgiving. Thanks for the tips I hope mines come out the same look, color, and also tastes great...
Have you guys watched the great british bake off's masterclass? I bet you'd like trying some of the recipes they demonstrate, especially the christmas episode ones.

Why was there so little cocoa powder in this recipe? Maybe that is why the cake is bright red. It would be interesting to compare your recipe to other red velvet recipes and compare cocoa amounts.
Lisa B. For one Everybody doesn’t like the deep chocolate flavor in red velvet. Two it’s makes the color look better and it makes it look what it’s actually called red velvet and not burgundy.

This is the best red velvet recipe I have found that does nothing t require butter. It is light and fluffy❤

See this is what I was looking for- a recipe with beets or beer juice. I was mildly disappointed when I saw the red food dye, but also not surprised 🙄

Also Love that buttermilk flavor tartness too👏💕
The best red velvet is with less cocoa at least that’s how do it in the south. We don’t like the deep chocolate taste 🤷🏽♀️
You absolutely correct. I have been making this cake since the 80s and all these recipes with all this cocoa is over the top.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of it either
A friend wants red velvet for her birthday cake, with Kevin doing it, I’m sure I can too.

I'm going to try to make this . I stayed in South Carolina and they make the best red velvet cake. It's not a chocolate cake it taste buttery

Hey I'm shonte, that red velvet cake its looks good
Wow looks delicious.😋😋
I was expecting Christmas music at the end. Must be the Red colour
My recipe calls for more cocoa
It looks delishus
Could i use this to make cupcakes?
Sure!
Is this enough batter for a sheet cake?
The more coco the darker and more chocolate flavor. That's the way I was taught. Mississippi here 👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏👏
Wow looks yummmmmm😋😋😋
Like+full view 😊💖
Thank you 😋
Wow that is a great looking cake !!
Will it be a difference without using vanilla extract and just imitation vanilla flavor a difference
Imitation will be perfect!
Do not like cream cheese icing on a traditional Red Velvet Cake. Cooked frosting is the absolute best.
Cooked frosting?

I have made red velvet many times, I've never seen a recipe with just one teaspoon of cocoa powder. Must be a typo in their recipe. But looks delish.
Because we in the South dont like a Red Velvet cake that taste like Chocolate Cake. The 1 teaspoon of coccoa is correct.

Red velvet cake does not suppose to be chocolate otherwise it’s a chocolate cake that’s red . 😕
Thank you for watching!
Perhaps it was your weak-@#$@ cocoa powder. Once you go Herschey's Special Dark cocoa powder, you won't use anything else!
No pecans on mine please, Ill be right over 😛
