    Isn’t it interesting that Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior and Dean Martin all sang amazingly well while both smoking and drinking?

      Christopher Thomas Yes indeed! Recently I commented somewhere about the example of Joe Cocker who died of cancer, I believe? and apparently smoked heavily, his voice sounded like he was in pain, kinda reminded me of a chainsaw ripping thru plastic sheeting. And yet...think of others like The Rat Pack and another good example was Nat King Cole who left us waaay too soon due to lung cancer...HOW did those rich and beautiful voices hold up to the abuse?

      Sammy Davis Jr. died of throat cancer from smoking and Dean Martin died from complications due to his alcohol addiction. "Frank Sinatra" was the only one who continued to sing into his older years. ALL of them sang wonderfully in their early years.

      @@LadyAxe13 Nope. That's not how it works. Getting old is unquestionably BAD for the voice, ESPECIALLY when it comes to high-end vocal range and power. It's a no-brainer really when you understand how meat and dairy cause so much mucus to form and inflammation in the body. Most can get away with when you're young, but it will always catch up with you in later years.

      I am now in my early 60's. I eat mostly a keto diet--loads of meat, fat and dairy. But I always allow several hours of fasting before singing. My voice has never been stronger or higher. Like the good Dr. says, everyone is different. My doctor can't figure out how all of my blood tests have improved so much. She said she wants to try the keto diet. Just like fasting, you don't do keto 365. Moderation.

      Geoffrey Tester These threads are rather old. But, if one drinks coffee, milk of some sort should be added to help prevent acid stomach afterward. If I have nothing else to drink, I will take decaf coffee and powdered creamer to cut the bitterness . No milk and no sugar...which is another voice killer. Thank you so much Dr Dan, this is actually a very great and big reminder. Yes, it happens to me when I drink milk especially it kind of makes a layer in my throat. I usually don't use anything(food or drink) that contains acids e.i. lemon, orange, etc when I have to sing or I do my vocal exercices because it kind of irritates my throat, using head voice is a bit harder in times when I use(food or drink) that contain some fruits that have citric acid especially. Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to learning new diets for singers.

    Another great vid, Dan. I am on medication and gave up alcohol completely over 2 years ago (not that I used to indulge every day anyway). I also cut down on milk because of the mucus/phlegm and have noticed a marked reduction in these. The singer's diet sheet on your vid is pretty much in line with my own diet, not just before singing, but generally, so even though this may be classed as a virtue that could be shunned by some, "I am pretty pleased with my little self!" I can only speak for myself, but I just realized that I can’t eat snacks like pretzels if I have a performance. I only found this out after I had some pretzel snacks and then later on I went to do some Warm Ups later. It was weird because I had drank plenty of water after my snacks but I could still literally feel some snack crumbs come up with every breath I took to sing and I had to stop my warm ups due to the affect of the crumbs on my voice. I’m thinking that perhaps I simply did not wait long enough after snacking to sing, but from now on, I’m just going to avoid that type of snack at least 24 hours before any of my performances or practices. I love the Singers Dietary suggestions in this clip and it seems easy to follow too. Thanks Dr. Dan:)

    Dairy is my holy grail! Before a gig or rehearsal, I always eat ice cream before and it lubes my pipes up real well. I do sing primarily raspy and heavy. Do you think that’s why dairy helps my throat? Because I need more lubrication to keep good vocal health when doing high cost vocal qualities..?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, I understand that the sensation you feel resulting from dairy helps your voice to 'feel' lubricated. This being said, it is important to note that no food or fluid goes directly to the vocal folds themselves.

    Truth be told, I used to have horrific reflux which has absolutely given me vocal damage. It was very painful and nothing was working. Nothing until I cut out all animal products. I didn't even quit drinking, just quit animal products. Suddenly, the daily and painful reflux issues I had disappeared. My voice was repairing. It was amazing. Well... this month was my birthday month and I had cakes and some cheese (like a dumb). Not kidding you, the reflux came back just as bad. I didn't even eat meat, just dairy, and it was all back. See about going plant-based and check out if it helps your voice. :)

    Dairy products increase production of mucus in bronchial tubes. That's a fact. I learned this at university (I am pharmacist). Now-thinking more about it-for example, most of the expectoration drugs work in brochial tubes as well as in nasopharynx and sinuses, so maybe also diary products can cause increased production of mucus in these areas, if they do it in bronchial tubes. That explains why some of you feel mucus in your throat after drinking milk. But this is just my deduction.

    A few yrs ago I did hear about dairy mucking up our vocal cords. I laid off it and the congestion thing improved. I’m lactose intolerant now, so no dangers there! However, I recently forgot about the risks to the voice...and purchased regular milk again but also began taking those dairy-aid tabs. No digestive issues as a result. BUT I can feel a bit more mucus troubling me. So it’s back to almond milk next grocery visit! Almond milk tastes a lot better anyway. It costs twice as much as cow’s milk but it’s worth the price so that I can enjoy singing... 🤗🎤 Also, avoid SUGAR before singing, my peoples! And drink enough water! I’m very guilty of probably being a bit dehydrated, as I am small with a light appetite, hardly ever feel thirsty. Some people believe we should drink a half gallon of water per day. WHAAATT...? 😵🐬🌊

    Do you have any recommendations for cigar smoking (without inhaling)? I know it's obvious that it's not an ideal thing to do as a singer and I'm fully expecting the "singers should never do this" response from people, but let's just say the singer IS absolutely going to do this, then given that it's going to happen, what would be the best way to do it? Like alcohol, I'd like to know what the balance is. As it has been occurring, I do not smoke one the entire week before I sing, but I sing about every weekend, so that means gigs Fridays and Saturday's, then smoke cigars all day Sunday (usually 2, but on occasion 3 of them). And none all week. That might be too much but If I could do one a week I'd love that, but if it has to be one every two or four weeks then so be it. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

    Apparently, going by what E.N.T. once told me, acid reflux can also lead to a condition called "Barrett's Esophagus"- (which, for the record, is a pre-cancerous mucosal change which may or may not occur in the throat over time, due to acid reflux.) Now, while not everyone who suffers from acid reflux lands up with this condition- (it's actually a bloody rare condition), it IS still a risk, and those who develop Barrett's are apparently, more at risk of throat and laryngeal cancer than those who don't suffer from it- (and we all know the bloody damage them two buggers can cause!) I'm just passing on what E.N.T. told me, 'cos I thought that information might be beneficial to y'all. Peace and love.

    This question is from curiosity rather than personal issues. I remember Before Whitney Houston died she gave a performance and her voice was much less than the stellar performances she was known for. I am sure there would be many circumstances that could account for that but do you think her cocaine habit may have been to blame? Or do you think it more likely to have been an unrelated issue?

    • @DrDanRobinson

      Whitney's drug dependency will almost certainly have contributed to her vocal deterioration.

    That's crazy that there's "no evidence" of dairy harming the voice. I had the lead role in a high school musical, and we had to basically cancel rehearsals the two or three times I had a milkshake after class because I literally couldn't sing. Although... maybe the coldness was a factor, too, and not just the dairy.

    • @Rex-golf_player810
      @Rex-golf_player810 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think dairy does cause more mucus which might make it harder to control your voice temporarily
      The coldness probably also had to do with it though

  • @lrproductions2097

    All my life, I've heard research change when it suits the industry. Coffee dehydrates you. Coffee doesn't dehydrate you. Eggs are bad for you, eggs are good for you. Don't drink too much. Red Wine is good for you. Reminds me of the guy that watched his health every day. Ate right, exercised, etc. He died at 40. Enjoy your life and your singing. One thing I see in ALL activities, people just OVERTHINK just about everything. Do you think Frank Sinatra didn't drink hours before he performed?How many professionals do you really think follow these rules, especially the alcohol one? If anything, it will help any stage fright you might have! Enjoy yourself.
