About fifty years ago, I was sorting through the files of LP records when I came across this Rosalyn Tureck album, and bought it. I was immediately addicted to Bach and acquired my first piano, began playing, and still play. Tureck and her successor, Angela Hewitt, play Bach as a pianist should, as opposed to a harpsichordist, with a shaped line: with rubato, dynamics, and phrasing, all carefully managed.

I think this is the best Bach WTC I've heard all in all; some other pianists I might think as highly of certain individual Preludes and Fugues from this work, true... Tempo is such a meaningful issue, and most pianists were taking it too fast for these pieces; she appears to have a profound grasp of the issue, and has I think appreciation personally of a special Seligkeit inherent in these works...

Surprised noone here mentions Edwin Fischer, he is vintage gold and really gives Bach, or what we think must be Bach for our modern ears, without romantic embroidering. Though Gould, Nikolayeva, Kempff and Tureck also superb interpreters. I am afraid today's crop don't cut the mustard. Our time is sadly not a time of greats or visionaries, it is a swan-song before the fall, a time for connoisseurs of the past.

Thank you for uploading this. If only one could access the individual tracks separately.
In Book II she really hammers away at some of the pieces, quite uncharacteristically and in marked distinction to here DG recording from ca. 25 years earlier (see Fugue BWV 891). I wonder what made her adopt such a strident tone in some pieces. A new interpretive philosophy?
I know she influenced Gould's approach, despite his disavowal. What I'd be curious to know is whether he ever influenced her. If he did, I suspect it would lie in making her less "liturgical" as he put it. For me that means less self-effacing, more flamboyant. In other words, a negative influence. But I can only speculate.
"Self-effacing" is perhaps a bit misleading as a description of the subservience of her playing to the structure of the music; her mastery of touch, and the incomparable intimacy of her sound.
She remains my ideal Bach interpreter. Now if only someone would digitalize her A Bach Recital album from 1959, which is where my love affair with Rosalyn Tureck began so many years ago. That is has not been made available is scandalous.

Personally i base my own preferences for listening as well as performing some of these pieces based on Evelyne Crochet's interpretations and tempos and prefer those. Also i can hear a mistake that was left in this recording on the #17 A flat prellude (as I play this one) and around 1:22:17 there is a minor issue with her rendition.. (I am not saying mistakes are absolutely terrible when performing, see ashkenazy in later years but for recordings it probably could have been fixed with another attempt or as I saw in glenn guild during his recordings that they had technology to fix things without glenn actually replaying the part, or they combined a part from another track he did and you couldn't tell the difference, not even gould could)...

Wanda Landowska is really interesting. It's more of a heavy metal than Bach's performance itself. A musician who revived the forgotten musical instrument harpsichord in the 20th century. Already a past person, Jaccottet and Pichit lived in the same age as her. th-cam.com/video/egN29gohRY8/w-d-xo.html Fuga♥

She plays Bach _her_ way. Despite all the research into Baroque performance practice over the last 100 years, artists reach entirely differently conclusions as to how Bach’s music should be played. Truth is, we’ll never know. Pick somebody’s version that suits your taste, and hope that Bach would have enjoyed it, too.

I also love the way Nikolayeva plays Bach. Another one I like very much is Maria Yudina. I listen to a recording of her playing Prelude and Fugue #22 in B b minor, book I. Interestingly, Chopin's well-known prelude in E minor has a VERY similar vibe as this B b minor prelude. Listen to the two of them back-to-back. Not a surprise, since Chopin LOVED JSB, supposedly playing some every morning.

For me, the most satisfying piano version of the Well-Tempered Clavier is the recording by Evylene Crochet.
Here are links to both books:
    Book 1:

    Book 2:
    th-cam.com/video/ju6xpqqVZU4/w-d-xo.html
I left detailed time stamps so you can instantly access each individual prelude or fugue.
A big part of the problem with this Tureck cycle is the horrible piano audio. The Crochet recording was made in 2000 and features excellent sound. You will love it. 😎🎹

I never heard Tureck before this. Of course she had enough technique to do whatever she wanted interpretively. But some of the things she wanted to do are a little baffling.
For example, I don't understand the intrusion of angrily percussive, anti-vocal effects in the first fugue. It sounds like botched splicing.
The third prelude, a fabulous display of digital facility, brings Mendelssohn's 'Spinning Song' to mind. Was Bach anticipating a masterpiece of 19th-c. salon music, or was Tureck playing Bach in 19th-c. fashion? I was expecting something less obvious and conventional.

This recording is not representative. Tureck was the High Priestess of Bach, a master of touch. I think her best recordings are from the 1950s & 60s. Gould cited her as an influence and referred to the 'liturgical' quality of her playing.
The Toccata beginning at 10:25 gives a good indication of what she brought to the piano. Unfortunately, the 1959 LP is not available in digital form:
