Ciani’s cycle played for workers and recorded by an amateur - complete with cavernous acoustic and bronchial obbligato - is one of my greatest treasures. The pianist just out of his twenties and soon to die in a traffic accident seems to be Beethoven to the life: lyrical, rhythmically vital, mystical, fist-shaking. Norman Lebrecht, not given to gushing, called this contemporary of Argerich, Gelber and Barenboim an irremediably lost genius. Must we mourn that he never lived to be a grand old man when to be young was very heaven?

(January 2023) Magnificent temperament, poetry and depth throughout the cycle. Even the amateur sound brings an immediacy missing from clinically perfect recordings. An admired reviewer called this, dismissively, a young man’s Beethoven. True but, as Wordsworth said, to be young was very heaven. Thanks so much for sharing. -January 2024 update: So glad to see Norman Lebrecht praised this set to the skies in his book Why Beethoven? calling Ciani’s early death an irremediable loss.

Is it live? Sounds strange. With Cluytens and Kondrashin Gilels made the best Rach 3, even Richter wrote it in his book.

No question Tureck is among the best. Check out the very eloquent Bach playing of Harriet Cohen, one of the first pianists to record substantial portions of WTC. Of the more recent versions I find Angela Hewitt's second traversal the most satisfying.

Just reading in a book by Eric Larson that she gave daily lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery to avoid the nightly raids by German bombers.

A Very different flavor to Bach piano without all the usual quick little ripples and twirls. It may seem to some to be a bit stark and plane. But to me its another flavor, beautiful in its purity.
