- One of the quintessential British post war singles, Velocettes are thought of as ‘engineers’ bikes (I most certainly am not, however, yet even I can keep it on the road!). They feel far more sophisticated than the equivalent machines from other manufacturers and display old-fashioned build quality, which is one of the reasons they went bankrupt; Velos were too expensive to make.

Loved it Thanks ! I had an MSS in 60s , just bought one last month , MSS with electric starter, alloy rims , 12volt electrics , twin leading front brake .
Velocette singles are lovely bikes and indeed British singles in the main are a pleasure to own and ride.
I think the myth about the Velocette clutch must be spread about by people that have never seen one, they could not be easier to adjust with just a 1/4" rod inserted into a lock ring on the clutch, and nothing has a lighter clutch than a Velo, this one should have the alloy barrel as they went to iron after this one was made, a very nice bike without the ostentatious looking modern tank . 50 odd years ago I had a Venom Clubman. With the higher compression piston it really was a bit of a pig to start, but I did love the bike. Would I have one now? At 76 I need ease, which includes a starter so I'll stick with my 1290SAS.
No just use the right technique they will always start 1st or 2nd attempt
Very good and accurate video. I bought a venom after spliting up with a girlfriend as I thought it would cheer me up.That was in 1990 when I was 23.It was a beautiful bike to ride but it did give me a lot of trouble .Owned a Norton Commando in 2007 which was slightly more reliable but not as nice to ride.Bizarrely still want to own an old British bike ,just something about them.
Where did the accessory bar on the main bars come from. My bars are getting very crowded with mirrors and stuff so this would be very useful. Cheers Trevor

No NO they did not go bankrupt. They had full order books. The family closed as the younger generation eanted to list on the syock exchange and go yo a production line
Is that the honest sittinng upright top speed Paul? All the books say 100 which I've always been dubious about.... Ditto 34bhp, is that prior to the drive train losses?

Obviously the thing can go 100mph because one did in 1961, for 2,400 miles round a French bowl; that one was said to make 39hp and go 110mph and 36mpg. It wasn't standard as sold to the public.
Magazines got 92/93 mph from both Venom or Viper, that would be with rider crouching. NB the power claim for Viper was 26-28, for Venom 36-38 depending on whether called Clubman or not. Both derived from MSS for which the claim was 23 in 1954 but 27 in the sixties. The original MSS of 1935 was claiming 20. Petrol octane rating and compression ratio increased with time.
80mph is going some if you are 6 feet tall, heavily dressed and riding hundreds of miles in the day.
It isn't a good piece of engineering though has some ingenious parts, the sole improvement over the pre-war MSS is the prop stand. Otherwise it is a triumph of repetitive regurgitation of nonsense. They were very cheap secondhand once, which made them the ultimate education in how not to construct a motor anything. If you mastered it you could cope with any rubbish. Some of it is so bad it should never have left Hall Green on test. Examine the rear wheel spindle nut, left side, note the unthreaded spacer portion but numerous threads biting air. Also every chain adjustment requires loosening fine thread in aluminium, torque stay anchor. Contrast rigid MSS or any Honda or BSA. The aluminium backplate splits too, wrongly placed ribs.
If it were a horse it would be called Incompetence out of Wilful Ignorance by Complacency.
