I've been paper free for almost two years. I bought a bidet attachment for my toilet that does both back and front for women, and love it. It made no sense to me, if I just needed to dry, to waste toilet paper. I initially got white washcloths and was able to bleach them if the needed a good cleaning. But they were still rough and I wasn't totally happy with them. Then I saw this video! I had an old flannel sheet I used to cover plants in the frost, I ripped it into squares and it's much softer and absorbant. I like it much better! I bought two packs of toilet paper two years ago for guests who probably wouldn't be comfortable with what I do and that roll is still sitting there from two years ago, very little used! God is good all the time! 💜

@@theirmom4723 Actually it's not as bad as I had anticipated. I don't mind it. It's cold, but not like horrible. I would buy it again if I move. I love it. I got the one that does back and front (for women) I hear it cuts down the chances of urinary tract infection by quite a bit!

@@theirmom4723 If you use a squeeze bottle purchased online for inexpensive, you can use warm water from the tap or the squeeze bidet will be at room temp. Room temp is fine with me except on colder winter mornings. Have been using mine for several years now. But instead of constant refilling everyday(am at an home person), am going to purchase a few more and either a bit of white vinegar or essential oils. I suppose leftover brewed chamomile tea would be fine also.

I have been using my own cotton cloth wipes for the past two years. I love it. I keep the used ones in a bucket that I spray vinegar on. After all this time, especially since my wipes are made from white cloth, old flannel sheets that had gotten kind of thread bare, I noticed some staining. What I’ve started doing recently is preloading the rags in a bucket with warm water and washing soda. Agitate with my agitator like you have, before I wash them. Two years of built up stains are totally gone. I have a squeeze bottle bidet that I use to rinse off my anus and that seems to help me use less cloths and they get less dirty in the first place. I grew up in the 60s/70s where my mom used cloth diapers so I just clean these rags like we cleaned the diapers. I wet my cloth before I clean myself with some witch hazel and lavender essential oil that I have in a squeeze bottle. I find putting a smidge of olive oil helps as well. I just shake before use. I was doing that with the toilet paper anyway cuz the dry toilet paper was irritating my anus. Since I’ve been using the cloths, no irritation. I too keep some toilet paper around. But it takes me months to go through a single roll. Mostly I use it for cleaning up after my cat. Lol. That’s another story.

There is no point in buying anything when u have old clothes sitting at the back of your draws. I was raised by a depression era nana who saved absolutely everything. Buttons, wool, ties, elastics, everything has a purpose. Nana would cut up old sheets for wash wipes, flannel sheets became hankies, old cloth nappies (diapers) became floor cloths. Repurpose instead of waste buying.

I'm big into prepping in all sorts of ways and had even considered replacing paper towels with cloth, and tissues with hankies, but somehow replacing tp never crossed my mind. I watched this video a few weeks ago, and it all percolated in my head... Something I found I really wanted to implement. I've done it!! I decided a bidet sprayer was needed for my own personal preferences, keeping the cloth mess to a minimum. I'm still working on serging the edges of many flannel cloths in 2 sizes (after the disaster of washing many with simple pinked edges--what a thready mess!!). My bathroom has been set up for a week, with colloidal silver sprayer, cute baskets of cloths, and a lined hamper. My daughter is on board with me and all is going well!! Now working on the paper towel and facial tissue replacement!! 😁💓 Thank you for the information and inspiration!!

I decided to ditch paper towels, too. So, I got some of the organic cotton flour sack towels.....they're like 24" by 24". I cut them into quarters....each towel making 4 roughly 12" x 12" towels. I DID have to hem two edges on each towel, but it was a nice quiet job. :) I like them! I even use them to drain bacon on, like I did paper towels. They wash up fine. :)

I have a small two part portable washer. Wash on the left..spin on the right. Then drain and do the rinse...so what I do is a wash load, put it in the spinner and before I drain the old wash water out I put anything that needs a "pre" wash in the washer and run it through while the first load is spinning. Remove load from spinner, move precast load to spinner and drain. Fill and rinse the first load. Then switch out the precast for the just rinsed in the spinner and put the precast in the rinse water...but add soap and wash them. My rinse water always becomes the next wash water. It's just me so it works for me.

As for tp, tp actually uses more water in the manufacturing than washing your bum with just plain soap n water.

More recently just using hands and one cloth for drying. Am tearing up a flannel sheet now that is the wrong size for my bed but which I used to use when I had another bed. I love the idea of the spray bottle with colloidal silver for the "bigger" jobs, and the idea of keeping a basket with a stack of cloths on it -- and a separate laundry bin. The price of the brand of paper TP we have to buy (old house old pipes that clog) has went up $1.50 a pack in the past month so it's even more imperative to use a alternate choice. Anna In Ohio

You could use a rotary cutter to cut your squares from your old tees. Long sleeves might work great for not only more squares or as “sleeves” for mason jars when you don’t have a dark cupboard for fermenting. 🤔. Old tube socks would work well too.

I have had a bidet for about a year now but still used toilet paper. I got to thinking about the lint from the paper getting in places it did not need to go. Also the fact that toilet paper is now made in China! I am clean when I use my cloths but just need them for drying. Keep a lidded container with some vinegar water in it to put the used cloths in. My favorite are the velour ones. I'm the only one using my bathroom. The dirty wipes go in a small (uncovered)hamper beside the toilet. I never have a problem with any smell.

I switched to cloth tp for #1 several years ago & never looked back. Mine are from old white T shirts. I keep them in 2 clothespin bags which hang in our bathrooms. There are 2 small, flip-top waste cans w/a removable bucket inside....that's what I toss the cloths in after use. This system works perfectly for me. I don't add anything to the buckets. No problem w/odor. I have a simple system that works great.
It sure did make a difference in how often we needed to buy tp when I switched to cloth tp. I prefer it over regular tp.

I bought an older mobile home to stay in when I visited my daughter in Arizona for long-term visits to spend time with the grandchildren and help her out. It came with a bidet spray on the toilet. I didn't even know what it was at first I had to Google it. It comes in pretty handy. Except it only has cold water, lol. Grit your teeth baby!
I had seen a TV show about people that are ultra thrifty where the lady was using cloth wipes and I thought it was a great idea. I bought a couple of baby receiving blankets that were 100% cotton flannel and cut them up into pieces. Because the bathroom is so tiny I just tossed the cloth into the sink after I use it and when I stand up I give it a good thorough rinsing and hang it on the edge of the sink to dry. Because it's in Arizona it dries practically by the next time I use the toilet. Then when I do laundry I throw them in. If they need it then I use a bar of soap to help wash them in the sink if they need more than a rinsing. It was a system that worked when I was there. The flannel does fray a little each time you wash it but I just trim off the frayed edge every so often. The pieces are big enough but it doesn't matter if they slowly shrink.

I recently asked my father (90 yrs young) what his family used before toilet paper and he told me they used pages from Sears catalogs (Department stores) or newspapers after they were read..I don't know if I buy the idea of news papers because that would leave ink on your derriere and the ink would stain your clothing.

Roughly a year ago, I did a bunch of research on this (mostly reading other people's stories)....but you were definitely the inspiration!
I eventually decided to buy reusable wipes from Amazon.....organic cotton material....I'd call it flannel. These were all in the baby section, but you'd be so surprised, from reading the comments, how many people were using them for the same purpose!
I only use them for the "small jobs", so we still use toilet paper. But we also have tons and it's lasting a long, long time. Maybe, if and when we ever run out, I'll have gotten up the courage to use my wipes for the "big jobs" as well. *LOL*
For a container to put the used ones in, I just use a plastic, gallon bucket, with a lid. Since I dump it often, there's rarely an odor. Every couple of weeks, I spritz some H2O2 in it, just in case. I'm fortunate enough to have a cabinet right in front of my toilet, so I just cleared some space and stash it in there, out of sight.
On another, but related note, I also made myself some pantyliners (I just like to wear one daily, but am past menopause)....again, I learned that from YOU! I ended up getting some organic, flannel swaddling blankets....I think just 4, in total. Those, along with the PUL material, made about 20, and I still have fabric left over to make more, as needed. So much better than the other stuff!
    Thank you, again, Heidi! :)

I've been toilet paper free for almost 20yrs. My husband unfortunately prefers toilet paper.
I like to use flannel and I have a peri bottle I bought off of Amazon last year. It's the Cynpel brand & I got two on a "flash" sale for $10 for both. I like them because they have like a bent spout and it seems to work better for me than my other squirt bottles.
Several years ago at the end of the day a yard sale had everything for free so I got lots of flannel sheets & pillow cases for free. I'm still using them lol. Prior to that I just used old shirts or sheets cut up but much prefer the flannel!

I just buy the white terrycloth shop towels at our farm store or Walmart. There are a dozen in the package. I've paid $6.99 and $9.95. my first batch I got back in 2005, I don't recall how much it was. I like the nearly 12" square of these shop towels, why should the shops use white Terry cloth when they can use recycled t-shirt rags? So I tell myself it's ok to buy the last package on the shelf. 😂
These last a long time and wash up really well. Give off plenty of lint in the dryer to make fire starters for the wood stove too! Ha.
I also thrift any old towels I find, but I have always bought tea towels, linens like tablecloth, old bath towels, beach towels etc. If they are too thin for shower drying, I cut those up in a sq ft size and zigzag edges and fold them up.
In my bathroom I have a two drawer (old motel) bedside dresser, one drawer holds my folded family towels, the bottom drawer I have a plastic tub liner, and that's where the soiled ones go til laundry day. It's not pretty, but we quit doing pretty 2 decades ago when our kids left the nest, we downsized and now stuff in our house is there for a purpose, instead of home & garden magazine showing off for visitors. We don't have many visitors, thank goodness, so it's not been hard dealing with covid for us 2. We do keep our deck for anyone who drops by for any reason and it's a nice covered deck with ample seating and a pasture view. I have become so happy with covid living away from humans that I won't transition back very easily. Hahaha

Oh btw, I made an outhouse out of pallet covers, a handicapped toilet seat (bedside toilet when I had my hip replaced) and a bucket. It has a toilet paper roll on the wall as well as circle-a-word books that sit on two buckets. The cheap paper books are just there if you prefer the Sears catalog sized buttwipe papers, or if the t.p. runs out. Top bucket has extra roll t.p. 2 books and a Terry towel and pack of wet wipes. Bottom bucket (both have lids) is full of pine shavings.
We used a tonneau fiberglass cover off our old mini pickup as the roof.
When you get done with your duty, you simply move top bucket and get pine shavings and toss in the poo bucket.
If it's been awhile since anyone's used it they can use 'wet one to wipe dust off seat then towel dry it. Toss wet one in the poo bucket and put the towel back in the storage bucket.
I created this to have a bathroom for when we were outdoors doing gardening. We also put a washstand from my granny's garage outside the outhouse for a granite wear wash pan and safety pinned a big towel together after putting it over the towel bar, that way when contractors we have hired to do work here for us have a toilet to use with the amenities. We bury the bucket full of poo down in the locust tree grove. We have so few around that we have only had to dig twice to bury a bucket full of composting humanure.

They sell manual squirt bottle bidets that have the squirt attachment angled appropriately for emergency if you can’t use your bidet attachment to your commode.

I have been using napkins made from old flannel sheets but I sewed each of them. Some of them are very old over 10 years and are finally going into the trash as they have frayed all apart. I always just put them in regular wash never had a problem.
