Hey everyone! Tomorrow at 8:45 PM EST I will be holding the first ever TH-cam live chat. I will be interviewing a teenager who lives with a diagnosis known as speech apraxia. Looking forward to answering your questions!
I am partially deaf and when someone says “never mind” really knocks me down and in a way offends my disability. I feel the same way with him and as time goes on I’ll lose more of my hearing.
People say that all the time to people who can hear normally if the repeat a couple times and can't be bothered saying it again. You shouldn't let small things bother you so bad.
@@beyondbackwater4933 You need to realize that something that is small to you isn't going to always feel the same to someone else. Not everyone perceives the world in the same way as you. Maybe try to think of why it would bother them, even though it doesn't bother you.
@Nicholas Jimenez I'm not sure why. Many deaf and HoH folks use TTY for phones calls. (TTY uses an operator who types what the hearing person says into the TTY machine for the deaf person to read, and when they type their responses, the operator reads it aloud to the hearing person.) Phones are also set up with flashing lights instead of ringers. And these days most of us text anyway.
"Deaf" is not the same as "deaf". The former describes a hard of hearing or deaf member of the Deaf community (part of Deaf culture and uses ASL to communicate), whereas "deaf" is an individual with a profound hearing loss.
The fact that a deaf person can sit down and have a full on conversation with you with pout having to do sign or any other form of comunication, just reading lips, is just amazing.
true, I had a deaf/HoH hair cutter for a time and talking was absolutely no problem. Obviously she would have to stop cutting when reading lips but it worked incredibly well, even though im normally mumbling a little bit :D
The part of “positive, positive, positive”, he actually said practice practice practice. His sign and speech say practice, not positive. Figured I’d let you know!
I noticed that some of his signs that I recognized can be used in other ways. For example 2 phrases that really meant the same thing, I think it was "try" and "willing to learn" were the same sign. There's not always a direct translation and not always a sign for every word in English, and vice versa, and I think that's really cool.
I too am HoH and completely deaf in my left ear. Took lip reading classes as a young child for years(now 48). Lip reading is second nature now and I’m grateful I can do it. I am a automotive tech and I’m able to feel vibrations from noises on a vehicle such as suspension and guys at work are how??? Just something I’ve perfected over the years. So your correct I wouldn’t change a thing with my hearing. God doesn’t make mistakes so I’m good. Thanks for the video
I dated a deaf dude for a while, he had THE best sense of humour i have ever found in a person. When we argued , he would say "Stop screaming i'm fucking deaf , that doesn't impress me " It ended the argument in a sec. When i asked him what he wanted for Christmas he answered, anything but a phone , or any music playing device .
Hi there, I can see how one would come to that conclusion. As a Deaf person myself I am (unfortunately) very familiar with automated captions that are often gibberish....these specific captions on these videos though are human typed and added during editing, not automatic. And the man clearly used the sign for practice :)

I'm glad that Brad brought up not wanting to be talked to slowly, and I'm glad that he has the patience that others may lack when they want to give up and say "nevermind", and i hope people will be a little more patient.
My gran has trouble hearing due to her age, shell turn 89 this year, and she prefers when ppl are talking a bit slower. I think in situations like this, with people who read lips, I'll turn to my "slow-granny-talk" mode, now I know I should be careful to not do that 😅
I love the show "Switched at Birth", but i always thought that Daphne was a bit unrealistic, since she's so good at lip reading, but this guy proves that pro lip readers exist!
Courtney Michelle it takes practice. I've lost my hearing over my life. Started loosing it at age 11 and it's not great now ( swimming isn't always good for you it seems ) :') I can hear sounds sort of but not make out the words at all but with lip reading I can :) It just takes practice.
Quick story. When I was younger my dad used a storage company like in a lot with a bunch of small storage buildings yu can rent out. The owner of that place was completely deaf. My dad always talked regular and I did too. He Always talked kind of “off” as I saw it and one day I asked why he talked like that and my dad explained that he was completely deaf. I started learning a little bit of sign language when I once worked with a soldier that had a daughter that was deaf. His daughter would come visit us at the office and we had so much fun with her teaching us words. However, I have always been too afraid to attempt to sign with anybody else. I was always afraid they would just laugh at me. After watching this video I think I might try. Who knows, maybe I will find a new friend that can teach me more words. Thanks for these videos. These two were amazing.
Tammy Moody Don't worry, I don't think anyone would laugh at you for learning sign language! That's a great idea. Most of the deaf ppl I've met are really kind and eager to help when it comes to learning sign language. Just like any other language, you are making a step forward to learning and sharing their culture, and it's something usually appreciated 😊
I feel the exact same way! I'm a nurse who works with medically fragile children, similar to some of the SBSK kids. Some of my kids use sign to communicate due to having tracheostomies, and I've picked up quite a few signs over the years. However, I've never tried to use them to communicate with deaf/hoh folks because I'm too nervous! That, and I know a lot of nouns and adjectives, but few verbs.

I know it is annoying when I have to ask you two - twenty 😜 times to repeat something you said. Trust me, I get annoyed that it takes me that long sometimes... it is just so hurtful when someone says to me nevermind. Almost like I'm not worthy of your time and compassion. That is why I am so greatful for what SBSK is sharing with the world. We ALL deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect. God made all of his children perfectly imperfect to show us the true meaning of love for our neighbor. Thank you Mr. Chris! ❤💜💙💚💛

God made all of his children perfectly imperfect to show us the true meaning of love for our neighbor. Thank you Mr. Chris! ❤💜💙💚💛
Katie Sago thanks. I'm happy that Chris did the interview with us.
He seems truly happy to be himself. To me, its inspiring how much he is himself and happy where he is
This guy seems so down to earth bro like I can’t even explain how likable he seems
I love being Hard of Hearing, I love learning sign and expanding my communication skills... I am also greatful to still have enough hearing to be a dancer and I love the conversations that start when people find out I am a deaf dancer 😊
Wonderful!! 😀
I really need that SBSK sweater lol
I love him doing ASL while y'all are talking! Would love to see more of that representation!
This man is God sent. His energy, his spirt, his sincerity...they way he interact with children and adults with special needs is amazing!!!!! It brings me to tears....god bless and continue spreading love. ✨☺🙏

Great job with this video. I find it so interesting.
Finally the comment section isn’t blockeddddddd finally
Maddy Smith that’s because this video is two years old unfortunately
@@crystalcarter768 so sad, most videos I want to comment on how brave the people are and all that, but it's all blocked, so so sad
try this:
bring the volume to zero.
put your and over the subtitles and then try to see what they are saying.
If you did that, you probably even got more respect for that man
I try that but sometimes when they mumble or don’t say the words it’s hard but I do quite well with reading lips
His son’s adorable. What a lovely family.
His son at the end “nothing” was so beautiful it choked me up.
Omg first vídeo i can write something, i love your Videos!!!
6:30 aww it's so cute to see how much he loves his dad :)
Awesome skill to have, what a great guy
Finally a video that has open comment section lol. I just wanted to say that I love your videos and thank you for interviewing these ppl
Ugh what a good little boy this guy has, very respectful and polite! He's proud of his dad and his dad is proud of him.
"Knowing if there's a tornado or dangerous things. Or like someone calling him. On the phone."
Brad and his son are so sweet! Super handsome too!
Lip reading is a really cool skill that I wish I had. It's like a superpower, you can lip read what people may be saying from far away or wispering.
What a man and what a lesson to all of us. Gentle, kind, patient and so intelligent.
You can also see that his kid has been brought up so well.
INSPIRATIONAL
Good on you man, wish all the best for you and your family.
He seems so gentle and humble at the same time 💕 what a lovely soul
