My dad bought Carmageddon home after borrowing it from his friend and I spent hours on it in secret after school. I loved the yellow monster truck and would just drive over everyone... Ironic that I grew up to be a chill driver according to some people. Loved the video!

Oh wow, the sound of Grand Prix Circuit took me right back to 1988 :)
Testdrive was very good for its time, but playing from diskettes meant long load times. I still remember the 'crossfade' from Accolade to the title screen.
Indy 500 was so cool. Of course, back then it was fun to race the wrong way around to cause the biggest possible accident.
Also spent a lot of time making tracks in Stunts and racing around them. Was it a successor to Hard Drivin'? Can't remember.
Played F1GP as well. I wasn't very good at it though, because you needed to brake to get around the track :)

I can still sing the tune of NFS menu music in my head right now... How the mighty has fallen though, NFS hasn't been must play games since carbon IMO, but heck even carbon was basically an underwhelming underground 3 0...
I also never understand why EA never tried to compete with forza horizon...
And speaking about games in this video, there's I definitely played that 1993 indycar racing game, at that time the damage model was great that the young me ended up playing it as a car crash simulator instead of a racing sim 😂

Hm carbon was a huge jump? I don't remember it was, I played it on PC and was underwhelmed by everything in it. U2 and MW were the last great NFS to this day.

F1GP (1992) was really mind blowing for me. It felt *so real*. Spa in particular was incredibly pretty and immersive. I remember once running a full distance race at the same time as the live GP on the telly. Turns out it gets a bit boring after a dozen laps! But otherwise, what a game. In 1992 also came Car and Driver which I absolutely loved too, as a modern Test Drive basically, with a nice selection of cars and roads/areas including a supermarket car park, in case you wanted to practice reverse parking your Ferrari... But as much as I loved it, F1GP is fair enough as the #1 for the year.
In a very different genre, I also spent a lot of hilarious time in Carmageddon. Not sure the theme would work as well these days though! And of course, a lot of time with friends in front of Stunts, making dumb tracks, competing on them and watching the accident replays where the dodgy physics would eventually launch a car in space.

Oh this list was always going to be close to my heart… except for Donkey. LOL! I know it was co-written by Bill Gates himself but it just is not good.
I don’t know if Race Jammer really counts? I guess that argument could go on for a while?
Road Rally? No. Just no. OK I get that it’s different & interesting for that but no.
Computer Circus Maximus is at least interesting & honestly I like the whole text mode aesthetic.
Pylon Racer was genuinely impressive for its time but its time didn’t last long.
TEST DRIVE!! Let’s gooooooo! As crude as it looks now it was epoch making in it’s day & the closest you could get to realistic at the time & I enjoyed it & it’s one you must know if you want to know the history of video games.
Grand Prix Racing was the first “3D” racing sim & not an arcade stile racer. As daft as it sounds now the functional rear view mirrors were amazing for the time.
Indi 500 neatly shows how the technology evolved following Grand Prix, which followed Test Drive.
Stunts was fantastic & is still fun to this day & a must if you’re collecting retro games.
Street Rod 2 is just too fussy, fiddly if you see what I mean?
Indycar Racing feels like a huge leap forward even against Formula One GP. It looks & plays so well… if you’re in to sims & not arcade racers.
Nascar Racing was amazing in its day. I know you needed a high spec PC but it felt worth it. 😄
The Need for Speed looked & played like nothing before & I actually played it first on the PS1 where it didn’t look quite as good but played just as well.
Grand Prix II was the point I really stopped playing sims because they were too realistic, if you see what I mean?
Carmageddon was fun as hell but I’ve always felt it was deliberately controversial because “there’s no such thing as bad publicity?”
100% agree, the screamer series was done dirty here. This, more than other lists, plots how the technology improved year by year. You can visibly see the games getting more sophisticated & better looking one after the other.
    Great list, thanks.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

What do you mean not good? Hitting space like a madman not enough for your liking? LOL ;) Yeah, it's bad... And yet, so important. xD
Honestly, I'd really love to see Road Rally remade for modern systems or mobiles, with either text based, or even better clickety clackety input controls. It could be fun, tactical and unique. Same goes for Computer Circus Maximus.
First time I played Test Drive was on C64, and for the time it looked soooo good. I mean, as if you were in real life car.
I agree that rearview mirrors are often overlooked today, since they're in everything. But back then... If you think about how much effort in programming and rendering they required, it's something else!
Indy 500 with its designe emphasized the simulation in racing simulations, and was the first title you could actually get lost in.
My friends and I used to create tracks and race on them in Stunts. I never said it in the video, but I hardly ever won. xD
I get what you mean with GP2, and I play arcade racers exclusively now too. Short of Gran Turismo 7 on PS5, but that only because of VR. And to be honest I don't even really play it anymore. I just always think that I should, and never really end up doing it. :/
I loved Carmageddon, but I also loved the second more. Hard to tell why, but I did. Also, I don't recall ever finishing a race in them. I mean, I won races, but never by getting to the finish line first. ;) In this it's kinda similar to Postal. You can play Postal only shooting those that shoot at you, but it's no fun at all.
The next video in the series covers platformers, there's 18 in them, so yeah, 18 years, and some will definitely be surprises. :)
