Kudos to the interviewer. It is unfortunate but Mahathir has lost all semblance of respect of MANY Malaysians. Racist and irrational views from this old statesman is a total disgrace.
Mahathir's paternal grandfather also came from Kerala, India, and married a Malay woman. Consequently, he wants to prove that he is 100% Malay. This issue persists in some individuals with mixed origins as they struggle to accept the diverse tapestry of their ancestry. I am a Sri Lankan, proud of my paternal and maternal heritage. My paternal ancestors migrated to Sri Lanka from Thanjavur, British India, in the late 1820s as British agents to facilitate the labor trade. On my maternal side, I am blessed to have roots in Jaffna, a land steeped in tradition and a history of more than 2000 years of Sri Lankan Tamils. I am honored to carry forward the legacy of my ancestors and cherish the diverse tapestry of my heritage.

Mahathir doesn't speak like a former Prime Minister Malaysians respected, much less being a statesman after more than 20 years as a Prime Minister. Rightly so as the interviewer pointed out, Malays are also not the "original" people of Malaysia, like the Iban or Dayak of East Malaysia states of Sabah and Sarawak. Malays are also "pendatang" technically. Rightly Malaysians should be more Malaysian - Malaysian Malaysia - which ironically Mahathir does not seem to accept. Malays should therefore be more Malays than being more like Arabs donning Arabs garbs and thinking that they are Arabians (just because the Arabs have become rich after they discovered oil). Malays of the 50s and even 60s are more Malay in culture and attitude. Fortunately, not many educated Malaysians think that way, including the ordinary young urban Malays.

As a Chinese Malaysian, I always enjoy the diversity of our cultures. The colourful Indian culture and religion as well as the Chinese and some authentic Malay ones. It would be a pity if we lost all that in this land and substitute with some half baked Arab culture.
@@trevorwild195do u noticed the difference between you n chinese n indian in Indonesia n thailand? Half baked arab? Your comment so funny. Muslim malay still practice the malay culture in the same time practice the teaching of islam. Your comments show how stupid non Malay in Malaysia cant differentiate between race, culture n religion.
As a Malaysian, born and raised having known Malaysian culture all my life, it hurts to know that the former PM and potentially others in the country, see ethnic Chinese and Indians as migrants. We can't identify ourselves as Malays, we can't possibly "tick" Melayu in formal documentation submitted to the Malaysian government. Respectfully Tun, while I have admired your political prowess, I disagree that ethnic Indian-Malaysians and Chinese-Malaysians can be identified as Malays. Firstly, Tun seems to have conflated ethnicity with nationality. Perhaps considering the Malay diaspora might offer a different perspective. There are a small Malay population in Sri Lanka, who themselves have formed their own culture and language. Would it then be fair to impose upon them the need to erase their roots and history? Such an imposition would be a shame. The proverb "seperti kacang melupakan kulit" comes to mind. Similarly, such an imposition on non-malay ethnicities in Malaysia would be unfortunate. Secondly, would the Malay population embrace ethnic Chinese and Indians as Malays? Would ethnic Chinese and Indians have to embrace Islam to be considered truly "malay"? Would this mean that the exact same rights conferred on the "indigenous population" be extended to ethnic Chinese and Indians? In reality, the answer to all of these questions would be a "no". Perhaps what Tun means is that the non-malay/migrant community should inter-marry in order for us to "lose"/"forget" our non-malay/migrant roots thereby becoming "malays". That seems to be contradictory to our Federal Constitution which presupposes a diverse nation. Thirdly, while this point is a more personal point, with respect, Tun's failure to acknowledge his own roots exemplifies that diversity is not accepted in his ideal Malaysia. I am glad that I have met and continue to meet many many Malaysians who do not share Tun's view. These are the Malaysians that make me feel its okay to call Malaysia my home. However, I do believe that Tun's views, can be an extremely dangerous political rhetoric. If taken to the far end, it appears to condone erasure of certain ethnicities (an issue we have seen in WW2 and the conflict in Gaza). Apologies to anyone having read this comment, I do not wish to offend or take up too much time for a ramble. I do think however, that these discussions are important to have. Thank you for bearing with me, if you have read to the end.
Malaysian chinese and malaysian indians don't want to assimilate with malays to become true malaysians. That's the problem. To your question: yes, malaysian chinese and malaysian indians must let go of their original roots, their language and culture because those elements are deeply tied to their original country. They'll never consider themselves to be "malaysians" first, always "I'm indian" or "I'm chinese". They only refer to themselves as "malaysians" when they're abroad, when they demand for so-called racial justice and national unity or whenever they feel its convenient. To be a malaysian is to be malay, adopt malay culture and traditions, adopt islam as the religon, speak malay as the main language and acknowledge and respect the malay rulers and malay rights enshrined in the constitution. Being a malaysian is not just some abstract constract where you can define and use it in anyway that benefits you as long as you have a malaysian citizenship. Malays are the ethnic majority of Malaysia and you minorities should toe the line.
Every young generation should watch this and be so grateful that they have Anwar Ibrahim as a Prime Minister whilst they are growing up. May Brahman lead my beloved nation Malaysia to higher achievements. Mara ke hadapan Malaysia rakyatmu sentiasa di sisi mu. Maju Malaysia.

Tun wants every other non-islamic countries to treat other religions equally, but when comes to his own backyard he becomes a hypocritic. Is he even in the right mind? I mean to be fair, India is the motherland of Hinduism. Secularism towards all humanity indeed but cultural care should be given to this ancient religion in their own native country. Civilians of multi religions live in harmony, only politicians seek to divide and conquer.
He wants non Muslim country to be secular so that his fellow Muslim can grow unchecked. But during his tenure he closed down all English schools and left the non Malays no choice but to go to vernacular schools, which were also threatened by him but ultimately saved through hard work. He pushed islamisation very hard and from that point the westernised since colonial era Malaya transformed into a religious one. But when islamists rise and threaten to take over politics he became worried because he was a more modernised Islamic school of thought, and he built things such as north south highway and the high towers in KL and would seethe in anger if one day fanatics turn this country into Taliban. So yeah, he's complicated, but I'm grateful that he wasn't as bad as other leaders in failed states. You see, he secretly nurtured such views, but at least he keeps them in his heart and didn't turn these into horrendous actions.
There are Indians & Chinese Americans. They are not identified as Caucasians or whites. Similarly, Indians & Chinese Malaysians can't simply become Malays by just identifying themselves as Malays.
Do they hold US citizenship or they are just PR in US? I heard Malaysia is the only country in the world that gave the citizenship to the foreigners who brought by British before the independence.
@@zue1975They are born in America and hold US citizenship just like African Americans, aka the blacks, do. Blacks cannot become whites just because they call themselves white. African Americans cannot become Caucasian Americans by simply calling themselves one.

You guys go around the world and shout discrimination, but your behaviour on home ground is atrocious. Shame on you. Thank god you only represent a tiny minority of malays… the vast majority of Malays are decent, well mannered, respectable people who i love interacting and intermingling with.
Almost everyone, including Malays, today have ancestors who were immigrants. The definition of people with 'immigrant ancestors' depends on how far back in time you want to refer to. The indigenous people of Malaysia (orang asli) were in Malaysia even before the Malays arrived. No need to quibble over who is immigrant , who is not. As long as, the person is a citizen, all should enjoy the same equal rights. As a Malaysian, I'm proud of my ancestors for migrating to seek a better life. It takes guts and courage to get out of status quo and all that you are familiar with, to seek a better life for your family. My admiration to all immigrants.
The Malays are believed to have originated from Yunnan, China, which we learnt in History of South East Asia. The proto Malays are the indigenous settlers. Most Malaysians are descendants of immigrants which you right said in my opinion.
The interviewer is really good. How does he know Rishi Sunak does not speak his mother tongue at home? He lived with him or he told Tun? What about Malays who migrated to western countries.

Hats off to the interviewer.

Thank you for bearing with me, if you have read to the end.
i think he was pointing to some people that behave diffrently as what he stated..not all chinese or indians people.
"they can behave like malays, they can behave like india but they must be 100% malaysian" maybe tun got inspired by indonesia i think
This old man is ashamed of his own root. He blinded all the Malays by disowning his roots just to be the Premier of this country twice.
Malay = muslim, and muslin = malay then, based on what ammarannuar explained.
