  • This is my currently used DIY HiFi audio system.
    24bit, 96KHz capable!
    Both the amplifier and the computer have the same enclosure, which is available on Ebay. The front plates were designed on CAD and then machined on a milling machine.

    You took a whole lot of effort to make an el cheapo class d amp look hifi, but not gonna lie, it turned out awesome!

    • @TheDIYGuy999
      @TheDIYGuy999  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, the amp may be cheap, but it's not bad. I have replaced the input coupling capacitors and added more supply smoothing caps. Of course, you need sensitive speakers with this low power amp.

    • @R4MP4G3RXD
      @R4MP4G3RXD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might sound good but I guarantee it would sound better with something like a tda7293 class ab amp, simply because class d relies on a low pass filter to make an fm square wave into a sine wave. While class d is very efficient and small it has a relatively high thd(terrible at higher volumes) and as the components warm up the sound changes... Also class d amps have a high damping factor which I personally don't like as much as a lower damping factor, since my ears like warm sounds.

    What great workmanship, machining cases etc Congrats! Have to wonder why all the effort to use a class D amp and not build or install something with better capability? This project makes more sense as a preamp to feed some other amps or perhaps a LM3886 or other gainclone project if wanting the small form factor.

    • @TheDIYGuy999
      @TheDIYGuy999  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The class d amp is fine in my opinion. It has a very low power consumption and still sounds extremely good.

  • @Spookieham
    @Spookieham 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some fantastic engineering and design there. The only flaw is the laptop PSU. A linear supply would be a much better choice. I'm not going to argue against the Class D amp it's fine unless you are going for the top shelf in signal purity. A brilliant bit of work none the less and it shows what you can do with a bit of thought

    Well, I'm both amazed at your attention to details and the thought you put into it and disappointed by the class D amp (powered by a SMPS to top it off). There's one thing I don't quite understand: if you already used an iPod as the front-end, why did you need the PC too?

    • @TheDIYGuy999
      @TheDIYGuy999  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The Class D Amp is not as bad as you think. The power supply is also fine, because I added a lot of low ESR smoothing capacity. The iPod analog output however is crap. It is only used as a front display. The computer allows to play 24bit / 96KHz songs.

    • @CoolKoon
      @CoolKoon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just out of curiosity, since the screen is really small,
    could you ditch ipod and install small LCD and use older version of OSX like 10.6 for Front Row?
    I've always liked Front Row and was disappointed when they discontinued it.

    • @TheDIYGuy999
      @TheDIYGuy999  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory, I could replace the screen. Installing a very outdated OS X version because of Front Row does not make sense in my eyes. For maintenance purposes I'm using remote desktop or the TV screen. iTunes is controlled via Apple Remote.

    Just wanted to ask why you used a motherboard and not something like a raspberry pi? Was it the convenience of all the connections being in one place? Would be interesting to know your thought process

    • @TheDIYGuy999
      @TheDIYGuy999  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted to have iTunes, which is very convenient to use with the Apple remote app. I also built several Hackintoshs before. So it was obvious to use a PC motherboard.

    • @dozyproductionss
      @dozyproductionss 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! What do you think about using a Raspberry pi 3? The size convenience is there but integrating it in to an amp box seems to be a pain. I don't want to make some custom input/output panel, like you have, for all different connections.
      And I know I missed it but what is installed on the board, sound card, memory?
      Actually trying to do something very much like your Hackintosh but the $$$ savings is one of the ultimate goals. $35 for a Raspberry + $40 for DAC + $25 amp + $60 for an amazing pre amp + $50+ for all the little bits plus trying to find some old amp case. What do you think about using a screen? Really want to use an audio spectrum indicator (for the great eye candy) but it's an either or decision. If my project has direct/bluetooth connectivity than is the screen really that essential?

    The Americans bought a new fighter from the Russians. We collected a torpedo boat. Disassembled, collected - boat. Disassembled, collected - boat. They call for help from the Russians, they say, it does not work. Russian send their specialist, he locked in a hangar. Three days later opens the gate - there is a fighter. Americans are perplexed, the same boat turned out. English: "It is written in the instructions - to process the parts before the assembly of the file".

    While this is very cool, this certainly seems like an extremely sub-optimal way to do this. Use an iPod as a screen for the remote viewing an OS X desktop to a tiny iTunes? Surely there were better ways of doing this? Like streaming via the iPod??
    The project is awesome, but the solution seems hamfisted, am I missing something?
