We switched to Abeka K4 about 12 weeks into our school year and it has been AMAZING. After not retaining any letters or sounds while using another curriculum, he now knows half the alphabet and can read some CVC words. I absolutely love the methods Abeka uses for phonics. We are only on lesson 55.

Those blend cards are fantastic for learning to read! I start my kids with the blend ladders after they learn what all the letters say. The way abeka does it with a singy songy rhythm is key as well. "TUH, AAA, TUH, AAA TAA TAA TAA" for the blend Ta. All the way up or down the ladder. Love this method!

Would love to hear how you decided between K4…. Keeping it slow and enjoyable….. vs. K5…. And worrying our kids won’t “keep up” with grade levels and stressing. Comparison is a thief I know! But then again standards help us keep up with goals?

Maybe you know this already but K4 is just the first half of K5 stretched out over the course of a year. I think it all kind of evens out but what age a child learns to read does not matter in the long term! It is hard to learn all the symbols and sounds and it doesn’t need to be rushed, it isn’t a race. I am also using K4 with my 5 year old and it is working so well for him, the slow pace has been great 😊

From experience with my older two, it's easy to just piece things together as they get older and they tend to just "catch up" that way. We move through things faster or skip things they already know.

How does this compare to AAR level 1? I know your enjoyed aar, is there a reason why you are going with Abeka? Just curious! I’ve been back and forth with Abeka k4, aar1, and pinwheels for my soon to be 5yr old.

This is a more gentle start than AAR1. :) It picks up the pace towards the end of the year.

Thank you for this! I ordered manuscript materials for my daughter and the same lesson plan kit for parents. It seems like the lesson plans only cover the cursive option, though. Is that adaptable to use for the manuscript lessons? Or should I order the manuscript lesson plans as well? Still waiting for our order to come in and don't want to miss purchasing while they're on sale!

Would you recommend that the student know letter names and sounds before beginning the program?

I thought abecka was set up for a classroom!!! Someone I work with uses it and it looks like it’s for a classroom!!! I wouldn’t have thought of adapting it!!! The readers look a little like the new TGTB boaster books that my younger 2 kids use!!!

Hi! Do you think the teacher manual is necessary?

    • @ThisHomeschoolHouse

Yea, the workbook reinforces what’s being taught but it’s not sufficient on its own.
