    Perhaps she started as a starfleet vessel but was bought as surplus by the ECS.
    This could also mean that she has a renumbered registration.

    Ya know if you remove the pontoons, flip the nacelles under the saucer and it would make it into a tos/tmp Defiant type escort looking ship.

    There is a side view of the ship in the Star Trek Encyclopedia. It looks very much different from the model produced for Eaglemoss.

    This was one I ordered the first day it was available here in the USA. I received it and the only disappointment was that i couldn't find a single review of it online, so had no one to share my thoughts with. So thank you for posting this review, and its nice to know another classic TOS Trek guy also likes a ship from ST-2009. I was starting to feel dirty and disgusted with myself for getting a JJ item lol. I 100% agree with the 'Special' Klingon Battlecruiser too. Its a great design and fits nicely into the line, right between the D5 and D7. I guess you could say in my 'head cannon' its a D6? cheers & all the best.

    I'm not a huge fan of the JJverse ship designs in general, but this one is great and is easily my favorite. It feels era-appropriate and on top of that is actually very cool. Win-win-win-win-win scenario.

    I feel like that is definitely the same ship from the film though? Have you tried turning it to the same orientation as the shot from the film and doing a side-by-side comparison?

    Great review!
    Your warpdrive in the background. Is that the car charger USB port one?
    How did you wire it up to work with a mains power?

    5:24 That ship on the cover of the book was from the old History of Flight Star Trek book, and I want to say it was called the 'Tritium class'.

    Also Sulu's Kobayashi Maru experience was also chronicled in the novel, and it was actually pretty heartbreaking. Jimmy Doohan did a great reading of it for the book on audio.

    Why would a fuel carrier have any passenger capacity, let alone one of 300, which combined with 80 odd crew, puts it almost on par with Constitution/Heavy Cruiser class?

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chief Jericho You say that as if there’s a problem with the stated numbers?
      It’s a fuel hauler, and it carries 300 passengers, that’s it.

    Point for discussion: shouldn't the ship be called be the "ECS Kobayashi Maru", not "USS Kobayashi Maru"? In the same way as the ECS Horizon or the ECS Fortunate, these Earth Cargo Ships are not Federation starships or ships of the line (I never liked the name United SPACEShip - United STARShip definitely sounds better). On the other hand, if the Kobayashi Maru never existed outside of the Academy bridge simulator, then Starfleet could call it whatever they wanted. I wonder if the cadets considered the simulation any less real, when they realised the cargo ship, with a cargo ship registry, had a USS name? Star Trek II never called it a starship or a cargo ship though - just Kobayashi Maru, Class III Neutronic Fuel carrier.

    • @starsiegeplayer
      @starsiegeplayer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it would be ECS if it was a private vessel and USS if it belongs to Starfleet.

    • @misteravid
      @misteravid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@starsiegeplayer Thinking of the Ptolemy class tug with its under-slung pods. Definitely a TOS-era Starfleet vessel, designed to haul cargo. So a Starfleet cargo vessel based on starship tech...? Why not?

  • @misteravid
    @misteravid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    HI Stuart. The ship on the cover of the Kobayashi Maru novel is actually the USS Tritium, from Rick Sternbach's Spaceflight Chronology. Don't know why Pocket Books used it on the cover - maybe they were looking for a cool-looking design??? Anyway, the Tritium's back story is interesting in itself. And as you're a big fan of three-nacelle warp designs, definitely worth a look at. "Starfleet's greatest failure!", so the story goes.

    • @Trekyardswebseries
      @Trekyardswebseries  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I have the book, signer by Rick. I'll need to go take another look. Thanks!

      @@Trekyardswebseries No problem. I have the book too. Got it many years ago, at the 1991 25th Anniversary Creation Con on Los Angeles, where I met Rick and the Okudas. They were showing images of their upcoming TNG Technical Manual. Unfortunately, I bought the book AFTER meeting them. Don't recall too much, but I do remember discussing the Galaxy class-successor prototypes with Michael for quite a while.

    I have to admit, in my head-canon MADKOIFISH's awesome USS Mughi has always been the real-timeline TMP version of this ship. Look that up guys and gals, it's worth your time. Even a short flyby on youutube

    At first i thought it looks like the 2009 version, but Captains right, it doesn't really.
    Dont really like that version too much anyway, i think the STO version is far nicer.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So what does it look like then? I do like the design a lot. It looks at home with other ECS vessels and also with the original Enterprise 1701 & even the NX-01 in a way.

    I was under the impression that EM was a subscription service, which is why I've never bought any.

    • @forrestpenrod2294
      @forrestpenrod2294 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KlingonCaptain nope. Go to their shop. You can buy everything they sell individually. In fact ships like this Kobayashi Maru you can only by through their online store. You can also do subscription but unless you’re real hardcore and want every ship, I’d suggest individually and cherry pick the ones you want.

    • @forrestpenrod2294
      @forrestpenrod2294 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KlingonCaptain also if you do buy eaglemoss try to buy from their official shop. Quality of each model can vary, and if you get a severely faulty model they’re usually good about sending a replacement if you email customer service pictures.

      @@forrestpenrod2294 Thank you for the information.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cherrypicker here, and nope you don't have to subscribe. Yes if you do, you get a discount, but really if you either use a code like 'TREKYARDS' or wait for a sale (EM does them often), you can get the same or even a better price. This way you get the ones you like, and don't have to waste time, money, and shelf space on ships that don't interest you.

      Agreed that it is ugly, but its a cargo ship so its suppposed to be ugly. I grew up on a pretty large river and we would have tug boats, cargo bardges, and coast guard cutters come through; guess which one looked faster and sleaker? I like this one as its 'different.'
