    In this video I train my dad's guide dog, Lyric, the german shepherd dog from Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, how to wait at the door instead of barging out impatiently. This video shows how to teach nice door manners, as well as how to practice with multiple dogs.

    I love this, folks forget to retrain service dogs as needed and seeing an excited guide dog is a great reminder they are not robots but very much dogs with desires and needs. Keep sharing 🙏🐕‍🦺💞

      Training and maintenance is definitely for life! And Lyric is a little spitfire of a dog. I call her the pocket rocket!

    This is so awesome to see! I see so many people claiming you should close the door on the dog to teach them not to rush out. That never sat right with me. I really don’t understand punishment based training.

      Hey Emily!
      I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!
      Yes!! There are so many ways to train a behavior without using punishment. It's much more pleasant for everyone involved to show the dog what you want, instead of waiting for them to make a mistake! Welcome to the channel and thanks for leaving a comment!

    Thank you for such informative and organized videos. With a three dog household, multiple dog instructions are appreciated - just the quick comment, “work one dog at the door at a time.” I maybe should have realized this but reminder appreciated. Your videos invaluable.

    Yes please on the training dogs to release by name and staying while training the other. I have an untrained senior and a puppy I’m training for service work and managing this has been a huge challenge! Thank you so much for all your videos! They have revolutionized my dog training ability!! I appreciate all that you do.

      Hi Lorraine - thank you so much for this comment. It really made my day!! Are you on my Patreon? I actually have a video on door management and place training in multi-dog households that touches on this on there! If you want to watch that it's only $3 a month for over 100 videos and you can cancel any time :)
      Either way - thank you for your comment and good luck with your young SDiT!

    How often should you be working on these exercises? How much time do you devote to it when first starting?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sarah! So when I first start I want to work on it every time I go out the door so that the dog doesn't get confused about the protocol. If I don't have time to work on it, I'll just use food right on their nose like a magnet to get them outside quickly without ruining my progress. If I can, I like to do a couple 3-5 minute sessions a day on new behaviors and then incorporate them into daily life. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    What type of high value are you using? I’ve heard some good things about Charlie Bears? I use my guide dog Daily Kibble to reward him on a random reward schedule for positive up and down curb stops, and successfully passing dog distractions with purpose and drive and locating items I would like him to find.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cody! Thanks for reaching out! For high value treats I use string cheese, chicken, steak etc. Prepackaged treats tend to be less high value, though using freeze dried liver or other freeze dried treats would be your best bet if you're looking for something dry.
      Having used Charlie Bears, I find these treats to be lower value and more similar to kibble on the reinforcement scale for most dogs. So if you're looking for something you can take with you all day, I recommend freeze dried turkey livers, hearts, etc like these from stella and chewy: amzn.to/3dkOJ8e . If you are looking for something high value to train at home with I always recommend fresh stinky food like meat or a bit of cheese or Red Barn Food Log: amzn.to/2U7KgOG . Hope that helps!

    I am in a motorized wheelchair how do i do the door traiing in a wheelchair

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tina - the procedure would be the same. You would position the chair in front of the door, and make sure the dog is on leash so you have control if mistakes happen. You could also put a baby gate on the other side of the door as a secondary failsafe. Good luck!

    I love that she restarted the steps from the beginning after she changed the dogs environment by taking the leash off. Didn’t think of that!
    I have four dogs and trained them each in different languages; English, German, Spanish, and Dutch (just placed the Spanish trained one with my sister.) Which language we’re speaking determines which dog will perform that action! Which is most handy when it comes to releasing, especially with food and doors.
    We made a bad habit of releasing them at the door in the same order every time (based on typically least excited to most) and then they would anticipate being released and sometimes prematurely bolt because they knew it was their turn next. We also got too much into the routine and all of their release words just became one big word because we’d say them back to back.😅 Now we release them in different orders each time, usually based on who’s waiting nicest or furthest away but we try to mix it up.
    Backstory-
    My husbands dog was already used to English cues so we stuck with that and then when we got a Belgian Malinois I followed her breed’s tradition of being trained in German. (Taught myself some German words.) Then our roommate got a dog that was from a farm where they spoke only Spanish. She moved out, got married, and pregnant, got a house and was overwhelmed so we took him in since he was already familiar with us. I decided to keep him close to his roots and give him Spanish cues (I knew a decent amount of Spanish already.) When I began using Spanish with him he perked up like I’d never really seen him do before. Last but not least, we got another Belgian and another common language they’re trained in is Dutch so now I’m learning that! So fun ❤

    My dog, Sofia, does not run out of the door but if I am washing the car or other tasks I sometimes forget and she just walks out. When I call her she ignores me and keeps on going. She thinks that it is a game and wants me to chase her. If I run away from her she chases me. 😅 funny but a not good. don't know how to correct this behavior
