Teach your dog to stop barking at the door! | Great Dane Care

  • This video shows you how to teach your dog to not bark at the door when someone rings the doorbell or knocks on the door. Using a combination of positive reinforcement and treats, you can break your dog's habit of barking when someone comes to your door. Most dog's bark when someone's at the door from anxiety or excitement, but both are things that you can overcome with training.

Thank you for this video! My puppy never barked at the door until he turned about ten months old. Now he barks excessively every time and based on his behaviour I think he is anxious rather than excited. He does not show anxiety at any other time, so I think it is a covid thing as not many people have been to the house. I can’t wait to follow this with him.

Love finding this video ,what I'm really seeking is a video on getting my Great Dane and my bordercollie and my Chihuahua to not bark if I'm not present. Say like I go to the women's room, outside any door , go out to the corner . Maybe go for two hours .
Barking a little when I come home a bit isok but my focus to teach my dogs robot bark while I'm not present.

I really enjoy all your tips, thank you for making the videos. We have 1 1/2 Great dane/English mastiff. She is a great dog and we have gone through all her training. We still struggle with her barking and acting nutty when she sees another dog.... we did let her go through her first heat, which included phantom pregnancy, just this week we had her spayed and stomach tacked to prevent bloat. Hopefully the spay will help with craziness towards other dogs. If you have suggestions would love to hear, thank you!

I'm glad to hear your dog made it thru tacking. My two year old boy died on the operating table during tacking. Since we haven't tacked a dog, we also haven't had any bloat. I hope she calms with the dog excitement.
Have you tried stepping in front of her and having her make eye contact with you? I kept a pouch of bacon on me during walks for these situations. Once my dog made eye contact I'd pull out some bacon and have them wait until they calmed before giving them it. It helped to associate eyes on me and calm around dogs.
I am not a professional trainer tho.
      Best of luck.

Give him a chew toy or snack when they go to their bed/crate before you eat. Then progressively start training them to stay in their area by giving them something later and later into your meal. Eventually, they should understand that they'll get a reward if they stay in their area after you're done eating

We need HELP. We have four dogs, we brought two siblings into our house a year ago. One of them has a “reactive personality.” Meaning that, he will react in a bad way to anything going on around him that causes disruption with our dogs.
If anyone has any suggestions on how we can stop this. We would be grateful.
We can’t even have guests come to our home without them being put in the crate. I thought about the shock collar with the remote control to try to stop them, especially our reactive dog, Jack… But, I don’t want to do anything to them that might make things worse.
I appreciate anyone’s help here that might be able to help me. We absolutely don’t want to lose any of these dogs because of their going crazy when the doorbell rings or someone knocks at the door. We’re trying to calm him down. We’ve tried treats, it’s literally a scrum at the door of all of them barking going crazy. I can’t get to any of their attention. .
Any suggestions my dog loving friends?
These are terrific pups. They love us so much… But they are so different when someone else comes to our house.
Thanks for reading and if anyone has any suggestions, thank you for your help. We have considered “doggy Boot Camp” right now, my brother is dying from cancer and is on hospice care. He also has dementia. I’m trying to take care of him and the dogs and now my injured wife as well.
Thanks for reading this very long post. I’m sorry for being so long.

Well, it sounds like you have zero control over the dogs. I would suggest you get someone to help you (by ringing your doorbell) and you practice directing your dogs away from the door and either into another room or other set place for them you choose. You might need to practice this with one dog at a time until you condition all of them to listen to your direction.
This won't be easy or quick. I would start with 10-15 minutes a day with each dog.
I'm also curious to know how much exercise they get.

Ok ?? How do you stop the dog from barking when you have say, a sliding glass door? Mine looks out onto an enclosed porch & the porch door (also see through) doubles as my 'front door'. I kinda want to address the issue BEFORE anything starts & my elderly dog barks at anything that dares to come near. Elderly is 9 & a Shitzu, pup is 2mo.

    Hey Great Dane Care!
I would love some help with my 1 year 4 month old great dane Alexander Hamilton. He really is a very good boi, but there are certain habits/traits he is exhibiting that are making me nervous and I certainly need help with.
Ham is a whiner. I do my best to have patients, but it is constant. I work on ignoring him, and when he stops whining, I treat him. So we are slowly getting there, but its been a issue since I first picked him up at 8 weeks.
The biggest issue I am facing right now is his anxiety around other dogs. He isn't aggressive, but he loses his damn MIND when he is around other dogs. He was very well socialized as a pup so now he wants to play all the time. On a leash, it is almost impossible. He starts whining when has recently started into frantic shrieking. Today when this happened, I had him lay down to calm down, but instead he shrieked more and started to shake. I never want to reward this behavior by allowing him to play with other dogs, but I am starting to lose control on what to do. I reward when he is being good on the leash, but all bets are off when another dog appears. We change directions when we see another dog on the street, but all it takes is another dog barking in a yard. When he plays, he is SOOOO happy to be playing with friends that he is just too rough and completely plows into other doggos which makes other owners uncomfortable. He isn't being aggressive, but he loves to run and chase; however at 150lbs he can completely barrel roll over other doggos that are smaller than him.
I am starting to plan his neutering, but I am getting nervous. I have heard of many dogs that sometimes calm down after being neutered, but I have also heard the horror stories of dogs that become extremely aggressive after the procedure.
Sorry!! Thats alot, but any feedback/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am alone in raising this big guy and have worked my booty to give him a great happy life. Is truly a great dog, but there is still a long way to go.
    -Kelsey

    • @michellemero
      @michellemero 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello just a fellow Dane Owner...I hope the neutering will help. Instead of redirecting him when you see another dog, have you tried distraction method with a treat, making him sit then giving him a really high value treat, like hot dogs they love it! Then praise and continue walking. I have a dane that had that issues, with people and dogs. He has ignore dogs now, but still working on humans...He gets nervous, because everyone wants to pet him and say hello. Or if not a treat, try something like a distracting noise...a beeper, or you make a hiss sound. Every dog is different. Now that I take my dane out for more frequent walks he had gotten so much better. Now at off leash parks, he doesn't bother any dog...he sniffs and walks away. However I understand ur dane is still a puppy...so neutering i think will calm him down. :) Good luck!!!

    • @robin.karawoods

No? Why would you get a dog to leave it at home all the time.. they need stimulation someone would need to take them on walks at least once a day

    • @haleywilliams5073
      @haleywilliams5073 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Many people have dogs while working full time. Yes, Dane's are a more social breed and they would much prefer to have their people around, however you can still go to work. I know that a lot of workplaces are switching to working from home, so if that is possible for you, I would suggest you take up on that when you get your doggo. If you feel comfortable with it, I would strongly recommend having a neighbour (I'm Canadian, I use the "u". haha) or a friend come by to check on them/feed them/walk them, while crating.
Dane's would prefer if you have a set schedule because they like having a routine. I would say to take some time off to train them while in the puppy phase (crate training and potty training). During this time you can practice leaving them for a couple hours on their own in the crate. This channel has an awesome video and web page on crate training. You may even get to the point where you don't need the crate, and just have the dog in its own room filled with toys, water and a bed.
Just be sure to get up early before you go to take them to the bathroom and give them some exercise and food, and then extra love and cuddles when you get home. My family leaves water in each of crates so that they can stay hydrated. (I would also suggest not crating them at night if you are going to be crating them while working.... but that is just what I plan on doing with my pupper. Not everyone is comfortable with it.)
I hope this is helpful, and I'm sorry that someone else replied with judgement on your comment, even if they do have a bit of a point. Honestly, you just have to find what works with your family. As long as your dog is getting loves, exercise, food, and training, you should be all good.

Crystal Bristol watch “it’s me or the dog” they show a lot of dogs with issues like that but I’ve heard if you completely turn around and show your back towards them it tells them you don’t like that and you become boring so they stop, don’t allow it on yourself or anyone else because it will only confuse the dog like “can I jump or can I not jump” esp with grate Danes, if a kid came over that ain’t gonna be fun for anyone. Keep turning your back and don’t let them jump on you, husband, anyone! Because it’s not okay with a dog that huge

Why stop a dog from barking at the door? That's what they're supposed to do. Next thing you know a burglar will enter and your dog will just sit there, silent because YOU trained it to be that way!
