Good vid dude - the increased ammo clip tip is super handy! Another quick tip for players new to aerial combat: be prepared to make evasive maneuvers when the enemy starts smoking - if you're too close when they explode your ship will collide with theirs and then everybody's gonna have a bad time.
oooohhh the state of the game before air really showed it's glory of unintended gameplay making it one of the most unique aspects of any game ever made. funny hearing how people felt before hover fighting was discovered.
This is definitely a good tip. As he mentioned a lot of pilots will basically get tunnel-vision and chase you until you kill them or they die, you can use this to your advantage. Lure them into areas that you know you have air superiority in, and if they are stupid your aircraft will likely be able to take them down. If they aren't stupid, then they will pull away before you get there, which is fine too. You still live.
"It's probably best to avoid engaging directly in dogfights as much as possible" Best advice in the video. I prefer to fly like you do: Stalk and Shoot. I've done it since I started flying in IL-2.
oh and the spawn timer for a new vehicle starts as soon as you spawn a vehicle so once youve spawned one, park it, check the vehicle terminal to see how long it will take for your next spawn of that vehicle then use your stop watch as a guide for remaining alive in your vehicle longer then the spawn time. That way the transition is seemless from death to spawning a new vehicle.
One of the things i love doing when being perused by a less experienced pilot is to dive behind an abrupt cliff and slam on the brakes pointing myself up toward the sky just hovering, so they fly over the cliff past me. The only thing i have to do is flip on my back and roll for a correct angle to pursue again.
As someone who flies a scythe, I turn over 90 degrees and hit my afterburners to go towards the nearest mountain/structure. Since it's so thin, it'll be harder to shoot me. As soon as I'm behind a mountain, I'll hit my air brakes, and use my hover to strafe around, looking for the enemy in third person (I have the hover stability perk). It usually works.
You mentioned turning fights devolving into whoever can move their mouse fast enough, but I think it's worth noting that you can rebind "Look up" in the vehicles tab to a key. You can still use the mouse to look up, but if you just want maximum sustained turn rate it works wonders.
maximumise your time flyn, have a stop watch handy, as soon as you spawn a moz, syethe or reaver, start your stop watch, and try to remain alive long enough so that when you die you can spawn another almost immediately with accordance to the spawn timer. This encourages you to play a little bit safer thus remaining alive longer.
Another important thing is to always ALWAYS save 40% of your afterburners so you can get out of a hairy situation. In fact, i never use the W key to gain speed, ever. I just hit the afterburners to accelerate to top speed whenever i need to move. And always repair if damaged. It doesn't matter if you've got 80% health left, you get the hell out of the hotspot, land down somewhere safe, and repair it. Takes 10sec and will save your life in the future fight.
just an update to keep the video up to date on the game (don't know if Doc has revisited it) but stalling has been added to aircraft where if you suddenly lose airspeed it becomes difficult to accelerate so those turning fight probably won't last too long any more.
@Conceited98 flares always help, but if your flares are cooling down what I generally do is dive for maximum airspeed, hug the terrain, and attempt a sharp turn around a building, rock formation, or cliff and the missile will often try to turn inside of me and strike the terrain.
If you have a bandit on your six, your best bet to avoid them is to get as far away from them as fast as you can using cover and friendlies to your advantage. He who strikes first will always have the advantage, so make sure you're the person with such opportunity.
I probably should have explained that one a little better. What I meant was because these aircraft can hover quite easily, you can sometimes end up in the situation where two fighters are practically at a standstill just trying to turn to face each other.
The biggest pain in the ass ever. Whenever I save enough nanites for a jet, I spawn, fly to a combat zone and immediately get shot down by a level 100 scythe or mosquito.
The reaver actually does the most damage out of all the small aircraft, it also has the ability to absorb the most aswell. This is the NC perk over the other two, the downside is they aren't as fast or mobile as the Scythe or Mosquito.
Right now it's not that often that I'm having to wait to gain more resources unless I've been spawning a bunch of different vehicles in a short time. Usually the cooldown on a vehicle is the first thing that stops you spawning another one. In a Mosquito it's 15 minutes (Can be reduced with Certs) so as long as I stay alive for a little while, I can normally spawn another one as soon as I die.
If you are being hunted and need to get the upper hand try doing a power revers which if done correctly will make you fly backwards for 2-3 sec and then just gun them down.
My best advice for Reaver pilots is never retreat unless you have afterburner pods and racer frame 3. You're the slowest ESF and a default Mosquito/Scythe will catch up with you even if you're in a racer frame 3 (which is insulting). Deck yourself out with DPS and fucking go for it because otherwise you make yourself an easy kill. The ONLY time to retreat is if you KNOW you have friendly AA at a nearby spot to put suppression on your persuers to break off.
So apart from weapons, I'm guessing Flares and a larger magazine for your gun then? And after that one of the airframes? Lock on missiles have become rather common lately, so flares are starting to feel like a must have.
Add hot keys to up and down turning and when you are in a dogfight use a headset and listen for where their aircraft is in relation to you, then just out turn the crap out of him.
That's the great thing for an infantryman like myself. If I ever see some dirty reaver trying to mess my buddies' stuff up, just pop 'em a couple of times with a carbine and they scamper right off.
Indeed. I do agree, I try to do the same thing actually, but more often than not, I find myself neck deep in the 'shiz' and can't get out fast enough to be effective at turning around. Between tanks acting like A-A (MBTs mind you) or Burster Max units and then on top of this multiple air targets in my vicinity I often can't get into a favorable position before dying. Overall though, I agree, that's dog-fighting. It's the tactics that matter, but in PS2, there are few people that 'fly' for real.
Ugh! You make this look so easy. I've only tried flying a couple of times and I'm pretty sure it was someone like you that shot me down. Its very discouraging.
Around about 7:10 in. THIS is what people need to learn the most, if you start taking hits you PULL OUT, it's not worth dying for just finishing 1 guy off when you can do more damage elsewhere.
When ever I end up in a dog fight, I start treating it like I was playing an old Star Fox game. Doing loops, and U-turns seem to really slip alot of other pilots up when they're chasing you. =p
@SamJ1986 Yep, definitely agree with you there. You're one of the apparent few who actually post comments which make sense and not made up bullshit. Thank you.
Problem with dog fighting is that there are no planes in PS2, there are only hovercopters. They don't just fall out of sky when you are going slow, that's why 2 combatants end up going in slow circles around each other. In a real dog fight the faster machine always got the upper hand. What developers should do is make hover/fly a mode switch botton and then disable vertical thruster for the fly mode and make you gain altitude with speed
I'm always surprised how little awareness people have in this game. First thing everyone should familiarize with is the unique sounds of each empire's fighter, sound is my biggest queue in this game - if I hear enemy fighters I go into paranoid mode.
Just seen your video they are cool but I'm still struggling. I've changed to the controls to what I'm more familiar with (Arma 2 controls) but when i enter a fight with a enemy, i seem to loose them and i have no idea weather they are above me or below me, so how do i gain the upper hand quickly and stay on their tail?
is there a way to make the mouse better for flying? cause i always have to move my mouse across my desk and lift it up to keep my plane turning. just if i moved my mouse down, then let go, i would keep going down.
Any help with aiming while in a mosquito? I can fly properly and everything, but when it comes to aiming, I have to make really really small adjustments that take forever and by the time I'm shooting, they wouldve have boosted away already. What flying sensitivity do you use?
I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you have to move your mouse extraordinarily far to turn at all perhaps you should increase your mouse sensitivity?
some one gave me good advice and told me to bind pitch up and pitch down to my mouse buttons but i only have 1 extra mouse button so i wanted to ask if there is anything else i can do to increase my turning speed any mouse settings i should tweak?
2 things. 1. how do you map your roll controls? 2. can you please put a controls screen overlay for a dogfight, atleast for a 3-5 mins run. Thanks. TERRAN FTW!
Actually given the scale which aircombat takes place stealth really isn't that essensial as the map is pretty much useless to spot aircraft. It can prevent them from noticing you if you attemt to hide and the like, but personally I find the map to be crap in aircombat.
Yeah exactly. As soon as you take ANY hits what so ever, even from small arms fire, you gtfo or at the very least (if you are confident there's only small arms fire) roll 80 degrees to the side and use the spacebar to reposition. Never.... Ever.... ever, remain immobile when taking hits. Idc if bart simpson is shooting rice at your windshield with a slingshot, you gtfo of there and find another angle.
Yes, but in PS2, lack the true ability to 'out-maneuver' your opponent. You're left with flying in circles at speeds that would make one's grandmother snicker. You have two choices. Get behind, get the kill as fast as possible, or run like a bat out of hell because someone is on you like white on rice. There is very little tactical air-combat depth.
True, shoot really fast (as hell), but i never try on combat, just bought it 10min ago ^_^ 250certs. Perhaps i can stick with my beloved pod missiles at the end...
I got the same problem Huge lag spikes. One was funny though, I lagged out for about a minute when i got my connection back i got credit for running my fighter into another one for a kill credit. :3
lol so yeah the other day i entered a liberator, and there was a gigantic dogfight, and he just locked the vehicle..great fuckin job. that's what i hate about the liberator carrying several persons.
Good vid dude - the increased ammo clip tip is super handy!

I cant believe you dont have more views with this quality of vids man!!
Thank you Doc for giving me some food for thought about flying in Planetside 2!

He might have invested in the dog fighting frame... this cert really does help manuverability.
just an update to keep the video up to date on the game (don't know if Doc has revisited it) but stalling has been added to aircraft where if you suddenly lose airspeed it becomes difficult to accelerate so those turning fight probably won't last too long any more.

Bind the mousebutton to pitch DOWN, and pitch up manually. Make sure you press space when pitching down to make your turns sharper.
Keep that in mind if you're infantry and getting banged with rocketpods. A little concentrated fire will not kill him, but make him run the hell away.
If you have a bandit on your six, your best bet to avoid them is to get as far away from them as fast as you can using cover and friendlies to your advantage. He who strikes first will always have the advantage, so make sure you're the person with such opportunity.

Congrats on being mentioned on PS2's "PlanetSide 2 Command Center -- Episode 8" video
The reaver actually does the most damage out of all the small aircraft, it also has the ability to absorb the most aswell. This is the NC perk over the other two, the downside is they aren't as fast or mobile as the Scythe or Mosquito.

@sed1er the m18 rotary works best for air to air, the needler word ok as well
Dogfighting is between 2 opposing aircrafts trying to out turn each other to either a get a lock on or put the gun on the opponent.
Indeed flares are currently essensial if you wish to survive as the majority of all small craft equip air to air missiles.
If you are being hunted and need to get the upper hand try doing a power revers which if done correctly will make you fly backwards for 2-3 sec and then just gun them down.

I've actually just done a bit more of an up to date video a few days ago going through the certs I use. :)
Indeed. I do agree, I try to do the same thing actually, but more often than not, I find myself neck deep in the 'shiz' and can't get out fast enough to be effective at turning around. Arent Dog Fights in real life a constant turning battle with someone trying to avoid having a missile locked on?
So what are the must have certs? I'm guessing that getting the stealth cert is pretty much necessary so you're not visible from miles away.
When ever I end up in a dog fight, I start treating it like I was playing an old Star Fox game. Doing loops, and U-turns seem to really slip alot of other pilots up when they're chasing you. =p
@SamJ1986
Yep, definitely agree with you there. You're one of the apparent few who actually post comments which make sense and not made up bullshit. Thank you.
Look out its the Red Barron over here, you are an absolute beast, cool montage of killing BR6 pilots

I really wish Planetside 2 had a flying tutorial
there should be a way to invert controls for the mouse when flying right? I can't get used to pushing the mouse up to pull up :O
Docs are you in an outfit or just lone wolf? I'd like to join and learn with you on the field. :)
Any tips for avoiding Lock-on missles? I can't seem to get away from them, ever :(
is there way to reverse the vertical mouse configurations during flying? im used to the nose pointing up when you pull mouse down
I'm always surprised how little awareness people have in this game. First thing everyone should familiarize with is the unique sounds of each empire's fighter, sound is my biggest queue in this game - if I hear enemy fighters I go into paranoid mode.
Grass is greener.
How do you turn so quickly? It looks like you slow down amazingly quickly and that's how you do it, but how?
Do you use inverted flying? Do you constantly tap Spacebar while flying to keep it in the air?
Would be really interested in know what certs you use
Just seen your video they are cool but I'm still struggling. I've changed to the controls to what I'm more familiar with (Arma 2 controls) but when i enter a fight with a enemy, i seem to loose them and i have no idea weather they are above me or below me, so how do i gain the upper hand quickly and stay on their tail?

idk if its a bug or what but when i enter a flying vehicle all my sounds mess up and i need to reboot the game for it to fix
Any help with aiming while in a mosquito? I can fly properly and everything, but when it comes to aiming, I have to make really really small adjustments that take forever and by the time I'm shooting, they wouldve have boosted away already.

Hey, little question: how much of a restriction does this game's resource mechanic put on how often you can use vehicles?
I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you have to move your mouse extraordinarily far to turn at all perhaps you should increase your mouse sensitivity?
some one gave me good advice and told me to bind pitch up and pitch down to my mouse buttons but i only have 1 extra mouse button so i wanted to ask if there is anything else i can do to increase my turning speed any mouse settings i should tweak?
What Gun do you use to take down the enemy Aircrafts in this Video? Is it the standard Gun for the Mosquito?
How do you out turn vanu planes my mosquito is terrible against vanu.
Unless some nice TR guy has converted your AA and is sat there waiting for you... :)
just go to settings and then to aircraft controls or something. It shouldn't be that hard to miss it.
2 things. 1. how do you map your roll controls? 2. can you please put a controls screen overlay for a dogfight, atleast for a 3-5 mins run. Thanks. TERRAN FTW!
What is the best gun to buy/equip for the mosquito?
how dare you fly over my faction. WE FIGHT NOW
rofl, was that ostekake writing in the background there?
im so happy there is x2 xp right now i went on like a 20 sniper streak
guess what a real dogfight is:
Guided missiles from several kilometers away. Typically you can't even see your enemy in a real dogfight.
@ 2:05
Wow, I wish my Vanu Scythes had near that same power. I have to absolutely HAMMER people before they go down.
I really want to get this game but I'm not sure if my graphics card is up to it, I was wondering what graphics card you use?
I chose the vanu because there sythe looks epic
Actually given the scale which aircombat takes place stealth really isn't that essensial as the map is pretty much useless to spot aircraft. It can prevent them from noticing you if you attemt to hide and the like, but personally I find the map to be crap in aircombat.
Man, looking at your cert total compared to mine is pretty depressing.
You need to do a search on google for "Dicta Boelcke". WW1 pilot that wrote all of theis down in 1915
how did you get all those certs
I used to dogfight, but now I get so much lag when flying I ALWAYS end up crashing into the floor T_T.
What hotkey do u use to switch views?
At time of this recording what certifications did you have on your jet?
thanks Docs. these are pretty usefull.
You forgot to mention that getting a wingman (woman) is great. Otherwise, it's only a matter of time till someone finds your six and you are toast.
Do you use your mouse & keyboard or a controller when flying?
Thanks man! Great vid
how do you go into third person?
Yeah exactly. As soon as you take ANY hits what so ever, even from small arms fire, you gtfo or at the very least (if you are confident there's only small arms fire) roll 80 degrees to the side and use the spacebar to reposition.

what sensitivity do you have in the plane?
you have 50 rounds the same as original weapon... do you?
I think they need to change the turning its way to hard if your new you are going to die by crashing
True, shoot really fast (as hell), but i never try on combat, just bought it 10min ago ^_^ 250certs. Perhaps i can stick with my beloved pod missiles at the end...
certs reduce time? awesome i know what im investing with next lol
this is prolby the standard since this is in the earily beta :)
I got the same problem Huge lag spikes. One was funny though, I lagged out for about a minute when i got my connection back i got credit for running my fighter into another one for a kill credit. :3
Yes
Thanks /Albinson
how? when i do it only works for turrets.
lol so yeah the other day i entered a liberator, and there was a gigantic dogfight, and he just locked the vehicle..great fuckin job. that's what i hate about the liberator carrying several persons.
they just took the design from the battlestar galactica cylon raider
Thnx man really helpful!
I just got shot 20 minutes ago, in PS2, in the cockpit -.-
invert vertical fly
