It is so beautiful great job! Put cardboard down on top of the grass then put compost and soil on top of the cardboard. The grass will die and break down with the cardboard and make the garden even happier.

I did the cardboard myself when I first established my beds and it works beautifully. I did poke a few holes in the cardboard for drainage.

He made his back yard his "own little piece of Greece" with a large garden complete with grape vines. He made salads and so many good meals with his veggies. Just like your grandpa, he gardened until he got sick-- diagnosed with cancer. What a nice example and memory that we get to have from our grandfathers! Much love.

Put cardboard or newspapers down before creating your beds to stop weeds from coming through your beds, eventually it decomposes and feeds your beds. Also get yourself a Clyde's garden planner, it's the best 6 bucks I've ever spent on our garden!!! It tell me when to plant what according to your frost dates, it also tells you all of the companion crops for each crop. It's for both summer and fall crops. It tells you distance to grow them , and how many seeds per row, and how many pounds of fruit per bed. It's a cool little calendar! You should definitely invest in Clyde's garden planner! I suggest it to everyone!!!! Lol 😂

    • @terripurcell2130
      @terripurcell2130 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lina6641 I put cardboard directly on top of the ground and then added the garden soil. I didn't flatten my cardboard, I just folded the cardboard so that it would be doubled instead of a single layer. Also if you use large cardboard and overlap then its less chance of grass or weeds growing up in between the gaps. I did this to my entire backyard two years ago and its held up.

I've tried his method in the past, and it saved me soooo much time picking weeds, hoeing and digging. I really like that you are paying attention to which veggies you grow next to each other, companion planting is a natural way to battle pests :) And finally, flowers!! Very good information in this video. Love that you guys are doing this TOGETHER; and seem really happy doing so. I feel this ongoing experience can really change lives.
I live in an apartment; and so the yard is off limits. I chose to grow stuff in a raised bed that I bought from Walmart for about $100 - super simple assembly - a five year old could do it.
Got 3 big bags of potting soil, 1 bag of manure, and several different packages of seeds.
I don't have a lot of room and made a few mistakes; but it was very satisfying to see that those seeds (some of them were so tiny), actually took root in these cardboard starter kits.
The roots grew through the bottom, and then I transplanted the whole thing. Two of the vegetables showed yellow flowers, a taller plant and one where the leaves were much closer to the soil.
Got hit with a hail storm; but most everything survived. I think a critter, possibly a squirrel ate the leafy stuff from one of the plants; but can't be sure.
And I've been taking video of the process; even if I don't upload to my own TH-cam channel; I'll have it as a record of what I've done, what worked and didn't. My biggest issue at the moment; is to know just WHEN to harvest anything. Seems that all of the seeds that I picked were good to plant in May to June or something. But just by looking, I have no idea when to harvest.
Since I forgot to label them; I hardly know what the 8 different things I planted are, just by looking at the stems and leaves. But I believe I know what the carrots are and those flowered plants, I'm assuming are both zucchini and cucumber; though I don't know which is which.
It's exciting to learn what I can.
To me, the advent of the digital age, and TH-cam in particular has become priceless... allowing me to discover things I could only dream of before this revolution hit.
I subscribed. And best of luck to all your future endeavors! 😎

I am so confused with your approach. You buy raised beds and then you don't really use them? For what little prep work you actually did, the block and timber planters seem like a waste of money. If you want raised beds, manufacturing your own garden soil is much cheaper and will actually fill your beds, and will help with weed suppression and drainage. A lot of vegetables and root crops also need light fluffy soil to grow well; growing them in a compacted lawn doesn't help.

I so wish I had space for a garden at my home. We have herbs growing in pots, but I would much prefer to grow fruits and veggies. We just moved into our first house and so this is all very exciting.. I would love to hear about your natural pesticide! I don't have Instagram but I think I'll youtube it. Would love more videos like this. Subscribed! I also would love a composition pile but I'm afraid of how much work it is and how much space it takes up. We live in a skinny house so the yard is very very small. I guess maybe I'll just buy compost. I think the part I'm most nervous about is bugs. In the past bug problems have been frustrating, so I'd like to learn to prevent them if possible. Thanks for sharing about your garden! Sometimes it's best to learn beginner tips from beginners because everything is simple enough and not too complicated. I appreciate that. Gardening can easily get too complicated. Hi that’s an awesome easy and simple garden bed! To block the grass, lay carboard boxes.. or stack a bunch of boxes you have lying around from amazon orders and stuff on top of the grass and lay your bed there.. cover the boxes with your soil and you shouldn’t have to worry about the grass popping out. Also the earthworms will help break down the boxes.. you’ll get lots of earthworks this way too

    • @geraldphillips1533

I recycle the big cardboard boxes that accumulate by removing all the shipping labels & tape. Cutting them so they can lay flat & be used as weed barriers. They will smother the grass & serve as a barrier to weed growth. Within a season they will be broken down and eaten by worms. It’s so much easier than digging out grass & weeds with tools.

I will be following you for hopefully more videos like this! You give off such a kind and passionate vibe and your smile is very contagious. I wish nothing but the best for you and your garden 🌱❤️

Highly recommend more depth in your soil. Also, pulling grass can disturb the roots of your veggies. The beds look super cute though!

Put cardboard down to keep the grass out. It will kill the grass, drain well, and decompose and turn to worm food.
