  • When one of the world's most popular artists pays a visit, it's a huge challenge to get over 300,000 people to and from a single location every day for three days.
    But the good news is that here in Melbourne, we have had a lot of practice! So in today's video we have a look at just some of the ways that we manage this as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    00:39 - Trams

    Melbourne does this stuff very well. I've been to plenty of games at the MCG as an out of towner and it all works more or less as planned. Even my own city of Perth has down something similar with the new stadium, which has deliberately reduced parking and heaps of public transport options. The location of these stadiums is important: you put them where people can get to and from them easily and not in some outer suburban place where people are forced to drive.
    I've been a bit surprised at the amount of commentary from other parts of the world around this to be honest.

      "The location of these stadiums is important: you put them where people can get to and from them easily and not in some outer suburban place where people are forced to drive."
      One of the big complaints people from certain places in Europe have about Melbourne public transport is just how hard it is to get to the outer suburbs with public transport compared to certain European cities. Like if I want to go from North to East I probably have to go through the city.
      It's a bit of a trade off and a bit of a failing, because the system is so city-centric we have slightly better transport to stuff in the city but we don't really have a proper grid system so getting to some places (Wantirna for example) requires a bit of creativity.
      I have to say though seeing how horrendous American public transport is makes me feel extremely grateful

    • @adam872
      @adam872 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@yaboykirby7789 that's fair commentary but it's also a function of how our cities have evolved. They're young by European standards and have radiated out from a core or centre over the decades. I think it's natural for the transport networks to do the same. I'm fine with it, personally. Europe is also a lot more densely populated than OZ as well, which I'm convinced is a contributor. I travelled by rail through Europe last Christmas and it's a great experience, especially in Italy.

      Meanwhile for Swift's concert in Singapore it was one of only 2 that were available in Asia* so many fans at that concert were from other Asian countries and had flown in to see it, causing air ticket prices to reportedly rise to the level for long-haul flights! Some fans stayed in hotels in Batam & Johor Bahru in neighbouring Indonesia & Malaysia, which are cheaper, & then travelled into Singapore on the concert day (via ferry & bus respectively). I can imagine the border crossings getting more jammed as a result. The concert is at the National Stadium with 1 MRT (subway/metro) station just beside it; trains serving it might display messages telling you which station exit to use depending on which gate you're entering the stadium via. Then some fans were criticized for leaving before the concert ended, but they might've wanted to beat the crowd leaving the stadium when the concert ended, though I think local private-hire company Grab also chartered coaches to help transport fans to other train stations further away, to reduce overloading the station beside the stadium.
      *The company managing National Stadium had worked with the gov't to pay Swift a grant to get the exclusive right to stage her concert in SE Asia, to help boost Singapore's tourism. This was criticised by a senator from the Philippines: "That's not what friends to to each other". Thailand's PM had also expressed disappointment (their former PM is a fan too apparently). In response I think 1 of Singapore's ambassadors disparged them as a "sore loser".

    Another reason that minimises the need for car parking is that the MCG is located within walking distance of the downtown area, which has lots of hotels and restaurants. This enhances the overall visitor experience of those from out of town, who would generally fly to Melbourne, and don’t need to hire a car. Another Australian city (Adelaide) has followed suit and closed its car-oriented suburban stadium in favour of upgrading a stadium close to the downtown area and the city’s main railway station.

    During large sporting events or concerts the MCG routinely house up to 90,000+ but more typically 50-70,000. How this is newsworthy after many years remains a mystery. Its interesting to stay at the ground for 30 minutes or so and watch the crowd evaporate on foot, on trams, to train stations and even in cars. Its one of the more convenient (proximity to CBD) and accessible (proximity to all forms of public transport) large stadiums around.

    I used to work right across from Jolimont station on Wellington Parade (the office building I was in had a great view of the MCG), and it's deadly quiet except for when big events like the Grand Final are on, when it gets absolutely packed. In fact, the reason Jolimont weirdly has those gated Myki readers for such a quiet station is to filter people through to the MCG in a more efficient manner. Normally for a station that is as quiet as Jolimont you would only have about two Myki readers for each entrance, but Jolimont has double that from what I can remember, about four per entrance I think. It's definitely a station that has a specific purpose even though it's patronage is one of the lowest in the CBD & inner suburbs for most of the year.

    The MCG is also not an unreasonable walk from Melbournes city grid. A lot of out of towners could be staying in the CBD within 45 minutes walk of the venue (for concerts or sport).
    Trams can make that journey easier and quicker, but if you’re in shape and don’t feel like being squeezed into a full tram, it’s also very doable.
    (If you’re there for that one thing too then the novelty of a walk through a city you’re visiting can be nice)

    yep, great public transport is why both Melbourne and Sydney have hosted the Olympics (Melbourne in 1956). Top notch transport is a pre-requisite for being considered an Olympic host candidate. Then there's The Australian Open, which has been catering to large numbers of overseas and local visitors for decades. The Swift concert is a doddle for Melbourne.
    BTW, the #1 reason for not having cars parked close to the venue isn't the inconvenience it causes to audiences in terms of time taken to enter and leave. The main reason is emergency safety. 96,000 people running out of a venue due to fire, need space outside to run into, or the exits would get congested. If there were an explosion, or public safety crisis at the venue, fire police and ambulance vehicles also need a great deal of clear open space, so they can pull up en masse right at the entry doors. That clear open space is what would allow a ton of emergency vehicles to get to people in time to save their lives.

    I attended the 3rd night and the handling of the PT was absolutely shocking. 1 barrier separating tens of thousands of people (platforms 1-6, and 7-10 respectively). I have never seen it as bad as this; was waiting amongst thousands of others to get to platforms 7-10 but were constantly delayed by people jumping the barrier and those sneaking their way to the front from Punt Rd direction. We ended up waiting for an hour despite being less than 30m from the myki gates.
    Was speaking with one of the police who agreed with me when I suggested people should’ve been separated by platform or line instead of the mess it is. I felt extremely bad for the disabled who were not given priority, and instead waited in squishy conditions and some looked terrified. Luckily we caught the 12:30-something train back to Lilydale.

      The oldest trams in the network date back to the 1920’s (which is one reason trams are such good value, high lifespans). Most trams built after the 1990’s are low-floor and fully accessible, but a significant amount in service were build in the 70’s and 80’s before the disability act came in.

    • @TheLostProbe
      @TheLostProbe 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      a lot of old high-floor trams are still in use because they're reliable and make up a very large chunk of the fleet (about half) so getting rid of them would make the service frequency drastically worse, and certain routes that are only served by older trams (the 82 or the 59 for example) wouldn't have any trams in their depot to operate

    We still have room to improve. Egress capacity and platform space at Southern Cross is insufficent for normal peak, let alone an event at Docklands. Traffic lights at Flinders Street do not give pedestrians enough time to cross, and it is worse with the degraves street subway closed.

Your clip did Melbourne proud with its efficiency of moving so many people in such a short time but I think you neglected the role of trains. So many who travelled to the concert would have used trains to get to the city and then used trams and many would have alighted from trains at Richmond and Jolimont stations.

    Great video! Only constructive criticism is the lack of explaining what the classes of trams are. Locals probably know but everyone else will hear the sentence "more class C and D trams for the event" and be left with no explanation as to why they have better accessibility. Is it the height? Are there more wheel chair spots? Are the entries wider? I actually don't know not being local.

    • @ilicythings
      @ilicythings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Our trams are generally classes based on model, with the older models having the designations Z, A and B (and W, for the historic city circle tram) and having a floor above the wheels, meaning there are stairs up to board the tram. The newer trams, C, D and E are all low-floor and have designated space for those using mobility aids to 'park'. These newer trams are also great for those with prams or luggage, which is a nice bonus. However, for the trams to be fully and easily accessible, the stop needs to have a platform that is level with the entrance to the tram, rather than street level, where the driver would have to deploy a ramp (I personally have never seen this occur). This is the main reason some lines don't run low floor trams normally, there aren't enough level boarding stops to justify it. The proposed G class (they skipped F!) trams will also be low-floor and I believe the plan is to make the whole fleet low-floor gradually by displacing the older trams with new ones. I hope this explanation makes sense!
