I had one for a few years back in the 90's, it was cool to have it then but now I'm 65 and to have such a car would only make me look older like one of those old blokes that you see a classic car show with a picnic basket and a fleecy blanket over the legs, but I've got old motorcycles to ride about on and that's not so bad.

I and my brother had one of these, our first car in 1968. Cost £40. Spent a lot of time under the bonnet and with the fibreglass patching the underfloor ventilation. Starting was always a lottery, especially when there was damp or cold around.Grinding valves and decokes took hours every few months it seemed. Gutless engine took over half a mile to get up to 60 on the flat. Eventually the main bearings went after a twenty mile cruise at close to 70mph on the Great North Road. But it was great fun with its shiny leather seats.
Reminds me of the A40 Somerset I had in 1967. Paid a tenner for it to a bloke at work who dabbled in cars. The car had been sat on the works car park for weeks with the engine removed from the car and put in the boot. Someone had pinched the spark plugs out of it, allowing water into the bores. This had done the engine no good at all. I got the car back on the road, but my new wife ( at that time) hated it, as it bumbled along with its worn out A30 shock absorbers and made my wife sick. They called them "A40 Bumblies" because of the ride. The final straw was when I went round a roundabout a bit sharp and the passenger door burst open and my wife narrowly missed being thrown out. I always loved that car and I'd secretly like to own one again, but it would be the fast track to the divorce court! I sold the car on for £30- a good profit in those days!
To Faldo 98 This is the funniest tale I ever heard! If I may say so you and your good lady wife are a couple of complainers! So what if the engine WAS in the boot? No-one ever complained about that in the VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE! As for your wife, she doesn't appear to have been grateful for a "bit of extra ventilation" when the door came open.(saves having to open the window!) Same thing happened on my (also AUSTIN) Mini round a corner. I was glad the previous owner had fitted those black rally seat (covers), because they had those built in side bolsters - which not only kept you snug in the seat - but kept ME from falling out round a corner when the door came open on MY Austin! Now perhaps I'M ,being ungrateful!
They respond well to assertive words of encouragement. Notice it couldn’t be bothered to start until the owner was about to call the scrapyard, only then did it cooperate.
@@denispalgrave7620 yes they DO start, only under NORMAL circumstances! Not after years and years of neglect! The engine designers went OVER & OVER them, to ensure really easy starting. But they don't like damp weather, if you don't have a garage! So you need to spray the electrics twice a week , with WD40. That sorts THAT out!

There is a good reason that thing spent 40 years in a shed. They were always crap cars. You should have left it there and set fire to the shed.
