I feel like this problem was even more obvious in Arlong Arc. first by cutting hatchan which is important later on in shabondy . and also how they cut out that Nojiko, gonzo and the rest of the villager actually knew the truth about Nami and cut all their involvement in the fight.
there is also that scene when Nojiko explains Nami's backstory. while anime Luffy refuses to listen ,in Livaaction he listens to the story, which is why it comes off strange when Nami asks him you know nothing and he says I do. this goes against Luffy's character as he doesn't really care about someone's past only his present this is shown again later on in Fishman Island when he sleeps when Jinbe starts talking about his backstory.

I think the live action is leaning more towards the children going on a pirate adventure and then facing their first real roadblock with Arlong and Mihawk. Whereas in the manga, luffy and to a certain extent Zoro were kind of already overpowered and a little bit more mature. I mean look at Luffy's intro. He beats the monster that bit off shank's arm. Then shruggs off being shot at and kind of one-shotting all of alvida's crew. For all of east blue, I felt that he was a superman like figure who can basically overcome anything thrown at him. And he is responsible for his decisions and Shows that he understands his crew on an innate level. Whereas live-action luffy is a mere kid in a pirate cosplay out to make his dream come true. In baratie, Luffy has to learn a little bit about responsibility when Zoro is knocked out, something that manga Luffy kind of already knew. So, live action Luffy is much less, oh this captain who I want to follow to the earth's end but first he must learn some valuable lessons and more this audacious kid who hopes to dream. He is a little more Naruto-esque in that way. So, he has a lot more room to grow. I think that it's a different interpretation of Luffy and not necessarily a worse version.

    • @nihili4196
      @nihili4196 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I wouldn't call luffy mature.
But he definitely was way too strong for east blue. His first real struggle was Smoker, and to some extent Arlong.
Also, things Luffy learns here are things he learns in Manga as well. Whole water 7 was Luffy learning about responsibilities of the Capitan, that they're not just friends but a crew, and he needs to step up and make hard decisions.
Tho this lesson for him started all the way in Drum Islan where Vivi had to taught him that not everything can be solved with fists, and he will sometimes have to talk with others and ask for help.
So his character development was pushed earlier, not created out of nowhere. Which makes sense, I honestly feel like people working on Live Action honestly never thought they would get second season, or that it will blew this hard.

Honestly, I agree with everything you said, but I also think I’m okay with Luffy maybe growing from “maybe I can’t beat you” to the anime “I’ll kick your ass no matter what” mentality he is known for over the next couple seasons of the LA. Luffy is primarily a static character in the manga, which works perfectly, but if they are trying to give a bit of character development where he goes from being less confident to gaining the confidence he has in the manga; I wouldn’t be against it if they do it right. They also may take these criticisms well in season 2 and tweak his quirks a bit to make him feel more like his usual confidence. Hope to see improvement in all these areas

He probably crossed some random noble OR did a lot more horrible things than Gally did - murder, rape, kidnapping, etc. All it takes it doing the wrong thing to the wrong person to get a bounty much higher than it should be.

Also, the cast are incredible and fun, and it's cool to see another rendition of the story being told in fun, new ways. I’m only 3 1/2 minutes in so I might be jumping the gun… But certain Easter egg characters are worth more screen time than minor actual characters and I think most would agree. Gyari being the antagonist in one of the One Piece pilot chapters definitely deserves a nod, and if we have to make cuts, cutting Gaimon and Fullbody just makes sense. Very interested to find out if the rest of this video changes my mind.
After finishing the video, I agree that there are building blocks that were unfortunately left out, but did not need to be accomplished using the characters that were cut. In my opinion, there is no problem with cutting or reducing characters, but clearly there were subtle and not so subtle plot points that they still should have found a way to write in.

This is to be taken with a grain of salt.. right? Because I personally think the Live Action did really great capturing the feelings of the first arcs. The true purpose of One Piece Live Action is to attract new fans to the manga/anime (current and future retelling) and merchandising. One Piece Merchandise has increased considering 4Kids hurt One Piece to the point that even despite Funimation fixing the dub the show wasn't as mainstream to be located in stores. This Live Action is Oda's extra spending money due to royalties, not to mention the lesser known actors'/actresses' careers will surely launch to higher roles in the future.

What I do love though is how the Live Action is consistent in showing that LA Luffy is a very different (and arguably weaker) version of him. The way he fights, the way he acts, the learns, and the way he acquires his crew are all vastly different. One of the main takeaways that I got after watching the Live Action was that "this Luffy is INEPT". That may not be a bad thing if they gradually build him up throughout the Grand Line.
All the points of the video are still valid though. Luffy definitely got off too easy considering how he got his crew into deep shit.

Awesome points! I feel a lot of the soul of Baratie was lost, sadly. I think OPLA did an amazing job. And I'm sure a lot of the changes made perfect sense logistically or in terms of budget. But from a narrative standpoint, imo, some of the changes make future of the story difficult. OPLA may become a quite different story by season 4 or 5 I think, which isn't bad thing necessarily, could still be very interesting and well done. You make amazing points about how much was lost or changed, and how just reducing Full-body had a snowball effect. Some of the lines from Zeff to Sanji and about Luffy, were some of the strongest dialogue in the early story imo. I missed Hatchan and Momoo the most, but I'm sure they were cuts that made most sense for production, but sting narratively imo

Agreed with most of what u stated in the video concerning the OPLA short-comings mainly just due to the time and money needed to tell the real OP story. However just to highlight Sanji's decision to join Luffy in the LA some points i noticed weren't mentioned in the video:
    1. Luffy encouraged Sanji to go after his dream
    2. Sanji saw Luffy's dedication to being the chore boy where he cud have ups and left at anytime
    3. Sanji saw Luffy's care and concern for Zoro wen he was severely injured
    4. Sanji saw Luffy standing up for the Baratie (even tho Arlong did beat him)
So while the manga had more substance to Sanji joining...the LA still did enough for me to make it believable that he did

I wouldn't exactly call them problems tho. Or at least privlems that need fixing. It is an adaptation.
Some things are necessary to be changed, and so far i don't feel like anything is bad really. We have same spirit of the story following just slightly different events. Like alternative universe where a lot of things are different, but outcome is pretty similar because people involved are still themselves. It is difficult task, but I'm not worried yet. So far Live Action has proved they know what they're doing, even if they change things in significant way.
Later down the line it might bite them in the ass (Imagine Oda suddenly deciding that Gaimon is now man marked by flames lmao), but i honestly feel like no one is honestly expecting this thing to last till the end of story, and everyone involved is just here to see how far they can go into adapting the behemoth of a tale that is One Piece before Netflix will inevitably can it for tax write off

They traded sanji's development for the having coby and helmeppo's journey with the marines. The real problem is that the network limits the series to 8 episodes max. If they had 10 episodes they could've fit more baratie without spending much more because the entire set was already built and also make the arlong appearance have more development and substance too by using the se physical set more.

While you make some good points, as far as Luffy being ready for the Grand Line, I would counter that even in the manga we can't be sure he is at that point. Yes, he beat Don Kreig, but all that shows is that he is more ready to face the adversity ahead than Kreig was. Kreig washed out after a week on the Grand Line, so it is entirely possible that someone could be at him yet still not be ready for the Grand Line itself. That was my takeaway after reading Baratie. The only thing that finally proved to me that Luffy was indeed ready for the Grand Line was actually reaching the Grand Line and seeing Luffy not only survive but actually thrive and grow as he progressed through it. I mean, Kreig was put down by Mihawk and forced to run back to the East Blue with his tail between his legs. For Luffy to truly demonstrate at this point that he is ready for the Grand Line would have been NOT beating the failure (Kreig), but beating the one who caused him to fail (Mihawk), and that doesn't happen, even in the manga. I think that is what the live action was going for. The only way to prove you're able to survive the Grand Line is to survive the Grand Line (or at least to take down one of the major threats that makes the Grand Line so dangerous). Kreig WAS a major threat to Luffy at that point in the story, but he was most decidedly NOT a Grand Line level threat. So, in my mind, the audience SHOULD be left questioning whether Luffy is up to the challenge ahead, and the omission of the fight against Don Kreig helps set that up. The key point of Baratie as it relates to the Grand Line is that Mihawk singlehandedly destroyed a whole fleet that tried to enter the Grand Line prematurely and the Strawhats were unable to beat him. That is still our big takeaway in the live action. The manga muddies the waters by throwing Kreig into the mix so some people see Luffy beat him and suddenly believe, "Oh wow! Luffy beat that guy so he MUST be ready for the challenges of the Grand Line!" In reality, that's like saying Joe challenged a chess grand master and lost, I beat Joe, so I would definitely be able to beat the grand master. It doesn't work that way. If I beat the guy that BEAT the grand master, THEN you could pretty safely infer that I could probably beat the grand master, but beating someone that lost to them doesn't tell you anything about how ready I am to face the grand master, especially if my victory over that failed challenger was a very narrow one. That just says I'm BARELY better than this guy that lost to the grand master.

Hindsight being a thing, I believe the better cut would've been to Syrup Village, and instead it felt like we got a pseudo-extension to the arc. I'm not saying it would've been easy, but perhaps the crew could've stumbled upon the Going Merry on Orange Island and sailed straight to Baratie, skipping Syrup Village entirely. Events play out as in the manga, to the point where Luffy has become a chore boy, and there maybe he meets Usopp who is also working as a chore boy after erroneously leaving Syrup Village and winding up on the Baratie before his boat sank, and he's now working to earn money to return, but Usopp takes a liking to Luffy and later sneaks aboard the Going Merry (to hide from the fight against Krieg, display his cowardice) which they don't realize until they're halfway to Conomi Islands. Give the time spent in Syrup Village--which ultimately doesn't have as strong of an impact on the greater story beyond the addition of Usopp and the Going Merry--to Baratie which does have a big impact.
