    A bayonet sends a message to your opponent that you're willing to take it to that level, which is what the Marines wanted to communicate to the entrenched insurgents in Fallujah.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Marines are the only branch that still actively train with the bayonet. They do so for psychological intimidation purposes rather than any real practical or tactical reasons.

      @@RockandrollNegro I was 2nd Marine Division 2005-2009. You're wrong. Anything we train in is for REAL practical and tactical reasons...not just to psych the enemy out. We're Marines. We don't need anything but ourselves to do that lol.
      One attack on an Army base in Afghanistan was haulted in its tracks when they raised a Marine flag over the base.
      There were very real, practical, and tactical Marine bayonet charges as recent as the Iraq war. I believe some British soldiers had one in Afghanistan.
      We actually still train with and learn to how to fight with bayonets as a portion of the MCMAP program. If it was all just for show then the bayonets would be much cheaper made of wood and painted black. Trust me, the Marine Corps doesn't get much but what we do get we USE. 😉

    There is at least one well documented instance of a Marine killing an insurgent in Fallujah with this bayonet fixed on his M16A4. It is probably the best bayonet the US military has ever fielded. I was issued the M9 in the US Army and I hate the damn thing - anyone that ever tried to actually use one to do a simple task or was forced to carry one along with all the other shit we carried probably feels the same.

    We were issued these from the armory and as knives go they were pretty cool, but when we got in country we were given benchmade nimravus knives and they were significantly better. In afghan the need for a bayonet isn't very high, so the added weight for what it offered wasn't usually worth it. I know a few people that carried them. The benchmades though... fantastic.

    Is it full tang construction? If not, it's just a tool to puncture and cut shoelaces.

    • @pennsyltuckyreb9800
      @pennsyltuckyreb9800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's a full length stick tang construction just like the older USMC Kabars, except MUCH thicker and beefier stick tang. Not sure if the OKC3s is pinned like the Kabars at the pommel but you can visually see the tang at the bottom and it's peened.
      The older Kabars are not peened at the bottom, just pinned.
      This "updated Kabar" is built like a tank and can take a lot of abuse. Trust me. My biggest gripe is the blade geometry is crappy for it to be a good slicer.
      Even cutting back the angle of the primary bevel edge it still isn't the best for that. It's more geared towards stabbing. And the aggressive serrations will cut most anything quickly so not a big issue on the slicing geometry. It is a combat knife/bayonet. It's not designed for arts and crafts.
      But it'll do all sorts of arts and crafts on the skulls of your enemies.

    From the manual:
    “Ontario Knife OKC 3S Multi-Purpose Bayonet/Knife System
    NSN:1095-01-521-6087
    MilSpec Gear
    866-577-2987”
    “The bayonet/knife should be inserted into scabbard with one strap snapped around the grip and the other strap over the
    cross guard so that the cross guard strap goes over the muzzle ring.”
    Supposedly to keep from cutting off the strap

    • @pennsyltuckyreb9800
      @pennsyltuckyreb9800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an ambidextrous sheath so you can stick it in either way and the cross strap will hold fine both ways. The cross strap is large enough and long enough that when you unbutton it, even if the knife is in "right-handed" the strap gets out the way and you won't run the risk of slicing the cross strap.
      It has the double straps to be "jump ready."
