Modified Australian M9 Bayonets, never before seen!
มุมมอง 9K19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Update, it appears these were modified within Australia to fit the F88 around 2000-2001. The NATO standardised agreement (STANAG) that stipulates the dimensions of a bayonet lug are vague. This results in standard bayonets that may not fit some rifles. In this case they required modification to fit.

    New Zealand post wont deal with any weapons so if you buy a bayonet and get a import permit its a nightmare. i had a arrange a courier company to go to the international mail depo to pick up my bayonet. was very lose to "lost" with paper work, but im thankful i got it. i wont be doing that again though.

    G'day PNS, I've got a quick question for you. I'm a Military Historian, in my retirement, and a hobby of mine is historic knife collecting. I was a RAAF member back in the early 70s. I found this video really interesting and because you talk about 'pointy stabby things', I reckon I'll become a subscriber. 😉 The question is for you or anyone who can help reduce my ignorance. When I was in uniform we were issued with L1A1 SLRs which had a pretty much standard bayonet. I noticed the bayonet in this video has a rectangular hole with rounded ends in the middle of the blade towards the point. I'm guessing it might be some kind of a custom hole to use on the rifle as a 'spanner' when breaking down the weapon for cleaning etc. Could you please tell me the intended use for this feature as I'm seeing similar holes in more and more knives? Cheers, and all the best. Bill H.

    • @pointynotsharp
      @pointynotsharp วันที่ผ่านมา

      @BillHalliwell hi Bill, it is used in combination with the end of the scabbard as a wire cutter. This is a common design seen across many different bayonets. I believe it started with the second generation of AK bayonets and now nearly all countries use a similar design

    I really like the dagger blade on that bayonet, you can easily imagine a soldier using as a combat knife. I wish the Austen had gone through further development and been more widely adopted. The Beretta M12 was similar in execution and it was widely used across the world for many decades. I acquired some for a Police Department when I was in the gun business and I was less than impressed by the lightweight components. The Austen seems more robust. Thanks for another outstanding video on a ridiculously rare bayonet! I wonder if the molded aluminum handle was inspired by the numerous combat knives that used molded aluminum in the Pacific theater during WW2.

    • @pointynotsharp
      @pointynotsharp วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can't speak for the inspiration of the design, but I believe it was made this way because the company had extensive experience in casting. The Austen has a bit of a poor reputation for reliability, I have yet to shoot one myself but they are quite solid compared to the Sten. Or at least the Stens I have held

    Awesome bayonet, I would love to own one but probably a better chance of winning the lotto. Also you're actually incorrect, the Austen & Owen are both sub-machine guns and were called as such here in Australia at the time they were manufactured and used, all the wartime manuals, MGO's and literature refers to them as such, as does Skennerton himself in his books. It wasn't until post WW2 when the army was restructured to fall in line with British standards that sub-machine guns were renamed carbines, by which time the Austen was well and truly obsolete.

    The design of these are so bad. Dont understand why they couldn't just make it full tang with a bit thinner blade and use 420hc with a decent heat treatment. Dont understand how they can screw it up so bad. The older m16 bayonet was fine.

    The prisoners taking bayonets is one of those urban myths, the purpose of two clasps instead of one allows the replacement of a normal bayonet catch which is 2 complex fitted parts (stud and catch) with 2 catches made of simple pressed steel. It also means should you brush up something and press the catch button, you have to press on both in order to remove it, so it has positive engagement. It is the reason why the L1A1 British bayonet ended up with a revised L1A3 with recessed catch, it was possible to "bump" the button and detach the bayonet easily

    I have a Smith & Wesson made copy of this M9 knife/bayonet. I brought it shortly after I left the Army, so it's only been part of my civvi collection, and has only been bush on a few hunting & camping occasions, so it's never really been given a hard work day.. Also because I use other tools, generally, for the really hard jobs, so as not to unnecessarily damage or destroy my primary blades & tools..I also own a KA-BAR with a tanto tip, and other knives that would generally be a preferred EDC choice, over the M9, thb.. Which is another reason it no longer comes out much anymore.. I also don't have my AR-15 anymore..(the gov't here in Australia stole mine from me)..and No more F-88 AusSteyr's in my life anymore, to try it out on either..So its becoming somewhat redundant. I've considered selling it a few times, but so far haven't as yet.. It looks the same as the 2nd one you show here, both knife & sheath, and has all the same details and functions..including the wire cutter & stone in the back of the sheath, and the 2 leg strap options on the sheath, as well as the 2 seperate retention straps, one over the knifes' hilt, holding it into the sheath, and the 2nd one around the knife's grip directly. Paid just a tad under $200 for it..Not sure on its true material quality as a 'serious hard-use' knife & actual bayonet though, being only a licenced copy.. If anyone has any experience with the S&W version, and its pedigree compared to the 'real deal' M9 in terms of 'cheap copy vs real gear' I'd be interested to know what your experiences are/were with them. Cheers.

    The weakest link in the M9 saga is it is stainless and that will break in any real Bushcraft. They tried to mediate with thickness, but that just added weight. The USMC is a much better bayonet, made with high arbon steel. Honestly, taking an AK bayonet and producing it 1 - 2 inches longer (about 5 cm) in a high carbon steel like 1095, instead of the super hard spring steel they're usually made of, is probably the best design. The M9 was supposed to be a super AK bayonet but in the end it's a pass. The M7 is a better choice or the USMC is the best choice. Supposedly Glock knives are made to function as bayonets on AUGs, and that's a decent M3/M7 style utility knife.
