Okay, This is officially the most perfect one. Hands down. The lyrics fit the genre perfectly and I LOVE that you left the solo itself pretty much exactly the same, but the rhythm section around it changes the whole feel of it. It's literally spot on. Great job.
You've succeeded in making me nostalgic for elementary and high school at the same time. That's what happens when you cover a 90's song in the style of the early 2000s
Did you know this song was written about the lead singer having his first child? He didn't like when rock bands got soft and sung about their kids, so he wrote it like this but it's a tribute to having his first child.
I actually read the book written by the drummer of the band called "So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star" and learned that fact roughly two decades ago. Totally changed my view of the song having heard it on the radio when I was younger and made me appreciate it a lot more
Think of this as a song about depression and see how different it hits. Always interested when an artist takes a different musical approach to a song and how the overall feeling really changes. Such a great interpretation. I work with a lot of older teen/young adults who have depression, and we often talk about music and how it can be a lifeline for difficult feelings. I ask them to give me a list of songs that explain how they feel and I will listen to them. Sometimes I am surprised when I think a song hits a certain way and my clients will say it feels so differently for them. Music is such a great way to connect.
So i was surprised to fine out this song is inspired by the artist having his first child .... closing time is both about the change in their lives and the birth of their daughter coco , plus it was a damn good way to end a set....
That's the beauty of music, it's not always about depression, but I get what you're saying. A song like 'Pinch Me' by Barenaked Ladies, while the video is colorful and the music has an upbeat tempo, is actually about depression.
God, dude, you always send me into a spiral of depression. Your covers are such a perfect gateway to the past. You understand what made Emo so impactful and absolutely capitalize on it and elevate it. It all just reminds me how much things used to be different. I miss having hope. I miss having a future.
Fun fact: this song was actually written as a sort of allegory for the birth of his child. He's not leaving a bar, he's taking his kid home from the hospital and starting a new chapter of life.
There are so many cover channels on this site where the music feels to overproduced and has no soul. You are NOT one of those channels. Every one I've heard feels like it has emotion behind it. I'm moved while I listen. Great work. This is so fun to listen to.
I'd love to have the multi tracks of this song or more or less any of your similar covers. I could learn a lot about arranging a song like this. Great job, man!
I don't know how you do it, time and time again. Bangers, every one. Well done bro, you deserve all the success and recognition possible. No pressure, but you're killing it.
Alex, once again your mixing of a song and genre has constructed a time machine capable of hurtling me back two decades into the past. You really get it dude. You just really do.
This is now my favorite song I’ve ever heard in my life. Every ounce of execution wasn’t just perfect. No, that’s too simple of a word. His execution was violently and uncomfortably exceeding of my expectations. The drum sound? Haunting. The vocal range? Impressive. The chord progressions? Inspiring. The camera work and color grading? What are we doing here… trying to establish a new baseline of beauty in the world? His clothing choice was on point. His framing was a masterclass. It would take me ten times as long as the duration of the video just to talk about the drum fills kicking out the chorus. Never have I ever been this thankful I tapped on a TH-cam link. I’m almost upset, what video could ever be better than this? Ai yi yi. Am I happy I watched it? Is this as good as music ever gets? Is it all downhill from here? Or did we all just walk through a door no one expected… no one deserved… but no one will ever regret.
I used to always sing and play the guitar in the bands that I was in, but now I mostly play the drums at home for fun over other people's songs on TH-cam. I always come to your videos to say the same thing, everything is excellently played and produced, but above all I love your drumming!
I'm sick at home with COVID and was about to go for a walk in the woods with the dog when I saw that Melton released a new song. Thanks man. Hit right in the feels.
Man. I grew up as a working class kid in the UK, and I was a teenager in the early 2000s. This song was sort of swirled in amongst early emo that made it over here and I always thought it just clicked with it in a way that I can't really explain. 'You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here' is a line that's always stuck with me. I'd love to give more context for why this one got to me so much, but there's a genuine lump in my throat right now. One of your best covers to date, and that's saying something!
REALLY enjoyed this and all the fun things you did with it (e.g., the riffing in the middle, and the tremolo (or whatever it is that sounds like soaring higher notes) near the end).
Alex, can I just say that your drumming in verse two was PRECISELY what I was hoping for at that point in the song. Really good overall, but that section hits just right. Excellent arrangement, excellent performance: what a fun take. Beautifully done, mate.
Fantastic work on this one! Lots of nostalgia - reminds me of when the local alt station was changing formats a few years ago. They played only this song for the final 24 hours. Simpler times then...
Can i recommend an emo version of The Freshman by the Verve Pipe? Its already a banger as is, but the vibes of the song are so emo that i feel itd make a great emo cover. Also, no surprise here, but another certified banger from Alex
Dude that song is fantastic, and none of my friends remember it. I feel like I'm living in a time warp where only I heard this song. Maybe it was an east coast thing. None of my California friends have ever heard it before.
@SeraphsWitness i wasnt even alive when the song came out lmao, I remember hearing it on the radio randomly at like 8, and I stg i couldn't find it for the life of me until I was like 17 or so. It's just a sleeper banger, i doubt itd be worth doing a video on due to it being so unknown. Not sure if an emo version or a pop-punk one would be better, i defer that decision to Alex. It might even make a good yallternative song, but that isn't my jam so I hope it isn't that 😅
@SeraphsWitness of course, no doubt. But my mans gotta eat, and to do that, he's gotta feed the algorithm. "The Freshman" by the Verve Pipe likely wouldn't be worth the extensive time and costs of the production to make such a video. We can hope though!
I've never heard this song before. And once I heard it, I did not care for it. But that song means it's time to go home. Now, it's my favorite emo song.
Hey guys, stream this and my cover of The Cranberries' 'Linger' RIGHT HERE: open.spotify.com/album/4k4DycPrVsPWX2YYiIJZMP?si=AsXaW4ZST7CdEyrDhzOYKw
THANK YOUUUU i've been checking DAILY
Thanks for adding Linger to Spotify. I was so bummed when I realised it wasn't there ❤
LESSS GOOOO. I suggested this a while ago 🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely in.
Saw the title and clicked at semisonic speeds
Same -- I didn't have to go home, but I knew I couldn't stay there.
Looool!! Same here
Lol. I see whatcha did there!
Salute to the Real
Underrated comment.
"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" has always been one of the most emo lines ever. Alex just gave the line a proper home.
Considering the song is about the singer's firstborn, and most of the references are to a uterus, it's kind of weird. A banger, but a weird premise.
This is one of your best imo.
Also, I think it’s time for Worship Team vol3 to Dare You To Move if it was emo
That would be absolutely killer
This needs more up votes
YES!!!
Definitely need another one of those
@@phillxorthis is NOT Reddit 😭
We close on our new house today. Thanks for the soundtrack.
Closing Time is an Emo anthem already, for me. Haha But you did a great job. So cool!
When I read the title I was like "Isn't it already?" :D
@@tearstoneactual9773 exactly!
Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end
Came to say the same thing
One of the first true emo anthems.
The trend continues: every one better than the last. And Linger was so astonishing, I figured it couldn’t be beat. And yet.
Whenever you do emo covers I immediately tear up because it absolutely slams me back to, like, 2004. I'm such a weenie.
Same. I loved 2004.
We’re all weenies
Grab a half dozen buns, i'm sure there are more weenies like us out there
my emo era. 2003-2008 🤘🏽
2004, the year I graduated Highschool ❤️
Gosh I love this guy. He's just straight vibing in every song and EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of them is a banger
the fall vibes we didn't know we needed. another banger!
It really is an autumnal vibe
yes! closing the summer
This is how a cover should be, not a carbon copy but a great take on it. So good thank you I didn't know I needed this lmao
new here?
As all of his covers are. Love his spin on songs making them his own. Check out the rest of the channel! Best on the Tube!
Master at layering and mixing the guitars

Dudes really covering my whole playlist!
Man, you're proving how much potential there is in the rock genres we left behind if we only honed our songwriting skills.
Did you know this song was written about the lead singer having his first child? He didn't like when rock bands got soft and sung about their kids, so he wrote it like this but it's a tribute to having his first child.
Yep! 😊
The Song Exploder podcast about this song is great.

Did not know that. Thanks for sharing!
Commenting as I start listening. But we all know it's going to be another banger.
Love you and your work, homie.

If “Closing Time” was a grocery store jingle only played at the end of the night before shutting up shop.
My stomach dropped when that huge, halftime chorus came in 🔥🔥🔥🔥
drum groove in verse 2 is killer. you are wildly talented my dude.
I’m just picturing myself owning a little indie/emo bar and throwing this up on all the tvs at the end of every night 🤷🏻♂️
Maddie sounds so good in the background! I was able to pick her out before even reading your description!

Absolutely nailed the guitar tone, love this
