- Bryn Mawr Film Institute presented An Evening with David Lynch, an intimate conversation with the filmmaker, moderated by film critic Carrie Rickey, on Saturday, September 13, 2014.
This event and A Celebration of David Lynch Cinema Classics Film Series was presented in conjunction with DAVID LYNCH: THE UNIFIED FIELD at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), the first major U.S. museum exhibition of PAFA alumnus David Lynch, on view from September 13, 2014 to January 11, 2015.
The original presentation included clips from several of David Lynch's films and television series. These clips have been cut out of this video due to copyright restrictions.
I regret missing David Lynch speak in New Haven, CT. I couldn't get the day off to attend and I was furious. I should have called out "sick." I knew it was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even though I don't have much Interest in his transcendental mediation practices I love listening to him talk about creativity and how you should keep your mind open to new ideas, even if they are just fragments and not fully realized yet. I still have his book Catching the Big Fish, as well the audiobook version. Not much in ways of practical advice but it does liberate your mind and encourages you not to discard those farfetched thoughts. He's a fascinating person.

24:36 "This meaning if you are true to the idea, The meaning can have harmonics." This is an incredibly profound truth. We can read so much into things and depending on our state of consciousness can get a certain understanding out of the same symbols. It's a symbolic universe with many layers of understanding. Because Dr. Lynch is catching ideas at such a deep level of consciousness, they resonate and can hit peoples intellect at different harmonics or different levels of consciousness, from superficial literal meaning, to deep metaphor and symbolism, this is why he doesn't talk about the meaning of his films, he allows us to have our own experience of the film at our own level of consciousness and understanding. Truly a Master Artist.

She seems rude in her responses after David answers. It makes me feel sad for him. He’s such a gentle person who already hates giving interviews…I don’t know why people have to be as snarky as she is.

Those Dune sets and some of it's production values are unreal.
It's interesting how Lynch talks about sound because I've always felt Lynch makes great use of silence in his work whether it was to build tension, awkwardness, uneasiness in the viewer, humour, all kinds of emotions really. Twin Peaks Season 3 is a great testament to that
Yes, he does. He uses it to great effect. People today are so occupied with filling up silence, as if they're afraid of it.

It's like she's not even listening. "Thank you" and "gotcha" are her response before awkwardly reading off the next pre-written question.
She's a teacher. Interviewers are usually trained journalists or very good speakers.
What a pitiful knowledge of cinema history this woman has. "There are many painters and photographers who have become film-makers: most famously Jean Cocteau, Andy Warhol..." Andy Warhol? Er, hello, why not try Derek Jarman ?
